  Fantastic service and great rooms

  I wheeled up on my bicycle and two staff members quickly took my panniers and showed me the best place to park the bike. They were great, you might have thought that I rolled up in a Bentley! It was obvious right away that this hotel differentiates itself on service. After a very warm welcome at check- in, I went to Room 1104 and was pleased to find that it was very large for Japan. Okura hotels are an old, well- established brand at the high end. This one, accordingly, sported birds eye maple furniture with lots of surface area and lots of drawers. The closet was huge. The bathroom comprised three separate rooms for the main sink, the tub / shower and the toilet. The toilet room and the tub / shower room also had sinks, that makes three in all. The styling in the bathroom is a bit dated, but its in good condition, spotlessly clean and everything functions well. The minibar was stocked, which is becoming a rarity these days. The bedding was very comfortable, and included a memory foam pillow, a big plus in my book. Breakfast was excellent. There was a wide variety, and the food quality was very good. The restaurant area got the morning sun and overlooked the Shinano River and Bandai, across the river. Room 1124 looks east, across the Shinano river to the Bandai section of town. Its 1.25km to the train station, very walkable in most weather. There are some good restaurants on the Okura side of the river, but most are nearer the station. Rooms across the hall (west- facing) would see the Nihonkai if they are high enough. The best river walk is on the Okura side and it goes a full 10km without interruption. There are cherry trees the whole way, and a number of public rest rooms, too. Its a beautiful walk. I was so impressed with the Hotel Okura staff and the service. Its the fourth hotel Ive stayed at in Niigata and gets my top rating.

  Every Okura a "Bijou"

  Great service, friendly welcome, flexible, clean and practical rooms. Finally enough connectors to plug my phones, camera, and other electronic devices into. Good breakfast buffet with excellent Japanese food and plenty of fruit.

  good location but old hotel

  decent prices by Japanese standards. old hotel n it shows, carpet in 1 elevator very stained. do not seem to be terribly busy, locatino is reat s close to Furumachi n 1 can walk back towards train station approx 15 mins walk 1 way. lawson close by along wit local small mall wit a marudai supermarket run by & 711. good quality sushi places within walkin distance .great view of Bando bashi

  Comfortable hotel in good location

  Throughly enjoyed my stay at Hotel Okura Niigata. Rooms are old but comfortable. Service is excellent, breakfast was great with such fresh delicious food. Hotel is close to shopping areas and a range of restaurants.

  Old but lovely hotel

  The Okura has a great location overlooking the river and on the Loop bus route. Its a 7 minute taxi ride from the station. There are lovely walks along paths right outside and along the river. The hotel has a spacious interior and many staff are very helpful and speak excellent English. Mr Suzuki was very helpful during our stay. He collected maps and timetables for our trip to the train museum which was out of town. He also booked restaurants for us. The Starlight restaurant on the top floor is worth dining in. Breakfast buffet was plentiful and varied and well priced in the restaurant on the ground floor. Although slightly dated, I thought the hotel offered good value as opposed to the newly built Nikko where we also dined one evening. The rooms here were clean and practical and the staff always smiled. Rooms which overlook the river are worth the slightly higher rate for the view they provide, especially at night. I recommend it for the dated charm!
