  One night to visit a friend

  I picked a place near the train station for my one night trip to Tsukuba. The room looked over a nice square, and a shopping center with many restaurants on the 3rd floor was only a 5 minute walk, as well as the train station. The room was larger than others I've had in Japan. There were just enough outlets, the water got hot like I like it, and there was a free English language newspaper. The internet worked fine.

  Smoking smell everywhere dated

  Kind of hard to believe this is the best hotel in such an international destination for scientists etc. horrible smoky smell and very dated dark rooms. Suggest you book at another town and commute into Tsukuba

  Good place to stay

  Caught a bus from Narita airport for yen2300 one way. Very simple to do even with no Japanese. Buy a ticket in the terminal. Bus stops almost outside of this hotel. You can see it from the bus stop. Reception is on the first floor. Hotel is good value, clean and comfortable. Bathroom has all toiletries included which I think is pretty standard for Japan. I did not take breakfast at the hotel but used the convenience stores nearby for cereal, joghurt and coffee. It's about 70 metres walk from the hotel. Shopping complex is lie rally on the doorstep. We would stay again.

  After re-branding

  We stayed at Hotel Nikko Tsukuba after their rebranding. Check-in was smooth. Non-smoking floor (did not smell any odours). Spacious room. Windows can be opened if required (an important point after the corona). Generally a pleasant stay. I would book via their official "One Harmony" website for maximum value.

  Okura Group Hotel, at the terminal station of the Tsukuba Express Line

  The main building and the annex one are connected by pedestrian deck at the station. Old rooms, and new rooms partially renovated for the G7 conference, are mixed on the same floor. In addition, smoking and non-smoking rooms are mixed on the same floor, so smell of the smoke in the corridor is unpleasant. Newly renovated room, a junior suite, that we stayed, was very comfortable. The room was large, with two big screen TVs, and the bath was very comfortable with a washing area. The restaurant also has Western, Chinese and Japanese food, all of which are very delicious.
