In The TwilightLike an actress in the twilight of her career, the shine on the Okunikko Konishi Hotel has faded but she still retains a depth of character. Fall was an appopriate season for staying at this hotel as the seasons matched the ambience of the hotel. The dinner meal unveiled the glory of the hotel must have enjoyed in the height of its career. A multi-course Japanese style meal with the sashimi trout so fresh the gills were still pulsing! The staff reveal the character of the hotel. From the quirky and funny doorman to the store clerk who when above call to give us directions to a sake brewery after we showed interest in the sakes on sale. Much more engaging then the usual efficient but modest staff found at most Japanese hotels. The onsen, is a bit small but average overall in quality. Where the glow of the hotel has really worn off is the rooms. Our's, although spacious, was in serious need of an update. The mats, fixtures and molding are all very worn down. I would go back for the meals and staff but not to stay in the rooms.

I don't feel safe here!I took hot spring here. While i stay female outdoor pool, a male just walked by. I was shocked and scared! I hide myself in the water and wait till that guy going away. Then I came out and tell the staff, they told me it's normal! Normal!? No one warn me first, they know I'm a foreigner without tell me first!

Hotel in a small town with winding roadWe chose this hotel because of quite good recommendation from Tripadvisor. However, when we reached there, it is quite general ryokan for us. It took us more than 40 minutes to drive from Nikko town to this place. Road is very winding and difficult to drive, lots of 90 degree or sharp turn on the way to hotel. Very much difficult for any inexperience driver like us. Quite far from the lake or Nikko town. Room is a bit old and no any soap or shampoo in the bathroom. I understand that they expect us to take a bath at onsen, but our parents are preferable to take shower in their room. So it is quite strange that no any soap or shampoo at all. Onsen is a bit small, but it is ok for me. Staff is very limited to English although they are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is good and yummy. We didn't try dinner at the hotel.

Visit to onsenWorst onsen I have ever been... 1000 yen per this it is too much! It is really old! Fungus is all over this place. We travelled from Ryuzu waterfalls to take a bath in famus Yumoto Onsen. We had really bad experiance.... All of the nice onsens were closed for public. This is the only Onsen that takes people after 5 p.m. We regret it. I got out after 20 minutes.... I am really wondering who is writing all those positive comments?

Dirty overpriced and no wifi in roomReally amazed such a place exists in japan or Ive been very lucky to not experience one during my four visits to Japan. Place looks old and tired, dirty. Unbelievably there is no wifi in the rooms so you need to go down to the lobby to use it. The bedcovers looked dirty and old, hand stains on the doors, carpet old and frayed, everything is old and worn. Absolutely zero options for vegetarian meal for dinner, was told just beef and pork was available. With all that youd expect budget price but no its expensive. Do not believe the good reviews about this place! Its the worst place Ive ever stayed in Japan. Avoid avoid avoid
