Overpriced ryokanOhtsuki Hotel Wafukan's pricing suggests excellent quality and comfort. In reality there's nothing really "wrong" with the hotel, but there's nothing really good about it either. The rooms are quite big, but without any character. The onsen is quite big, but not private - as suggested in other reviews. Actually, the onsen is shared by two hotels and also open to the public. During our stay the onsen was quite busy and noisy, and not delivering the relaxed onsen experience we were hoping for. The hotel's staff is ... well, nothing special. Receptionist kept us waiting for him to finish a rather long phonecall. The one thing good about Ohtsuki Hotel Wafukan is the food. The dinner and breakfast were excellent.

Excellent Place to StayVery luxury place we stayed during the trip to Japan. The atmosphere, food, and customer service is great here. We took the option to have dinner and breakfast in the room, and we had an amazing experience! The food is great. You will appreciate the food they serve (if you know how to appreciate good food). Unlike what some others said, we think it's worth the price. I'm sure you will get an experience you will remember for a very long time, which I think is priceless.

A great way to fit traditional Japanese culture into one night stay.My husband and I stayed for our anniversary. The staff spoke hardly any English but were very accommodating by serving us matcha and sweets and explained how to wear the traditional robes to the Onsen. We went to the Onsen early in the day and were the only ones there so it was very peaceful. I enjoyed the outdoor bath. The traditional dinner and breakfast was extremely filling, but it was a great way to try almost everything. We had a Western room with two twin beds that were very uncomfortable and the pillows had bean bag beans, again traditional. After staying days on a tatami mat floor we would have preferred that. Atami was a beautiful town and the hotel is very close to the beach, walking distance from the train station and has very cool shops to walk through and see the local fresh fish caught that morning.

Short and sweetUnfortunately due to the typhoon and the MOA museum being closed, we decided to shorten our stay in Atami and sadly had to leave the hotel earlier than planned to go to Tokyo. However the short time we were there, the staff were fantastic. The rooms were very clean, and the staff were extremely helpful when it came to our change of plans. We hope to return soon.

Friendly Authentic Onsen StayWe stayed 2 nights in Atami. Chose Wafukan because we decided on Atami pretty last minute and they were the only one available nearer to the station and bothered to reply our email. Room has a musky scent but authentic and spacious enough for a big family to stay. Was told we could not have our meal inroom and had to go to the restaurant, while we saw guests in the next room had meals in room. But we didn't complain because we are on the same floor as the restaurant. We deem it was probably because of miscommunication. Staff was friendly even though English was limited. We were very welcomed by the restaurant's staff. Totally enjoyed their hospitality, with them trying their best to communicate with us using translator app and pen & paper. Seafood was extremely fresh and superb, though we got bored on second day when there were mainly only fishes in our meals if not for our add-ons of meat. However, I must say Seafood lovers will totally adore their selection. Their sake range is a must-try. Hotel location is not ideal for older folks with problem walking and handicapped travellers. The ryokan is located right smack in the middle of a very steep slope, where even walking downhill you could feel the strain on your knees. No nearby convenience store too. However, there is a hidden shortcut we discovered later that led to the bayside, which is a long flight of stairs. The road leading up and down from the station vicinity also posed to be rather dangerous to venture with vehicles zooming at times at night on the narrow-laned road. The onsen was adequate and enjoyable. As a habit, we love to have our bath in the public bath later in the night where there were fewer people. The outdoor onsen is a must-try. Otherwise nothing special. There is no inroom onsen. Only a wooden bath tub. Our stay did end on an extremely bizarre and threatening note when a big-sized bespectacled chap opening up our room door at will early in the wee hours of the morning, stared at me for 2-3 mins before exiting saying sorry. We were pretty lucky I was awake checking messages on my phone..... Wouldn't dare to think what would happen if we were both still asleep. Eventually it was an old lady from the restaurant we bumped into at the hallway who accompanied us to the lobby. Front desk staff helped us called for a taxi to help us with the luggage to the station but that's it.... we were left to wonder where to wait and had to second guess which was our cab... Location wise, if you love undisturbed area in the heartland, I'd say this is a good place. But do note that there could be nothing to view outside your windows other than the window on the next building and cables on the lampposts. Food wise, to be fair, they were fantastic. Fresh and meticulously done in the local way. But in terms of the usual Japanese hospitality, very minimal. I am not pleased with the barge-into on the last morning. Didn't want to create a scene. Nothing lost then. Didn't want to waste time trying to relay right message to the staff. But certainly very displeased. There is no way you could lock your door from inside, but most authentic ryokan couldn't. We understand how it is, and we have stayed in some very traditional places to understand there is certain code to follow when staff were to enter a guest's room. Obviously ours did not. Nice place, nice restaurant, but we have no reason to return.
