    Very pleasant hotel.

Stayed 3 nights/2 days during a house move. Lovely traditional hotel with famous curling rink attached in town centre, Parking is adequate though poorly bay marked and poorly illuminated at rear.Disabled access poorly marked through white double doors from rear car park. The single elevator really needs some loving care and attention. Our room was spotless but during Covid they are not made up daily, you have to request. Lovely old world lounges and dining room and food is excellent as are the staff.

    Castle by the Loch

Lovely presentation from the outside and ideal for ferry, football and town centre as well as exploring the south of Scotland. There were plenty of staff who were all very courteous. The room was clean and well presented. The food at breakfast and dinner was excellent. The facilities were good and plenty of bars and places to sit throughout the hotel. Could not be faulted.

Nothing worked in room and very outdated, smelled damp , but chief is amazing

First impressions, it smelled damp and stairs are threadbare, I stayed Monday to Friday with my daughter who was staying in room doing college work. Whilst I visited one of my Branches she had zoom calls etc to do each day the 1st day our very old hair dryer caught fire ! The Porter came up and couldnt access his tools so was unable to take it off the wall, so suggested we went for dinner and leave window open as my daughters asthma was being affected, as couldnt change our room, second day , no WiFi, so daughter struggled to do her college work, from that night until we left the TV stopped working!! When we complained, the Porter came up twice, then told us there was nothing that could be done! As it must be the aerial on the roof , the tv still used an aerial in the back of TV . On 3rd day we asked for fresh towels and refreshments eg clean cups. We were told that due to COVID they couldnt change our towels, but we insisted as they were damp for 3 days, so they did change them and gave us clean cups and 1 small bottle of water between us?? To last 3 days we went to local supermarket and bought coffee ,milk etc ourselves in the end. On a positive the food was amazing, gym was good and bed comfortable, so would visit for a meal, but never stay again, the pool was freezing and after a long day at work you just want to relax, but with no WiFi, and no TV it made the evenings very long To top off our bad week of staying here our last breakfast before checking out , we ordered brown toast and got white, ordered green tea and got Earl grey ?? Whilst packing up I found someone elses lipstick down the back of my bed side whilst looking for my glasses ( so much for COVID-19 deep clean!) Just topped it off for us

    Grand Old Hotel

Short overnight stay. Older hotel, but very grand and comfortable. Rooms are spacious, bit dated but work fine nonetheless. Very warm rooms though, and throughout the hotel. Can control the heat in the rooms, so would be advisable when you arrive, unless you like a lot of heat! Service was fine, allowed to check in a few hours early as we had arrived early which was appreciated. The evening meal was very nice. Not overpriced, and the quality good. Breakfast likewise, which was included in the price. The hotel has a gym and a pool which was a useful facility. Sauna and Jacuzzi there too, but not in use at the moment. Gym and pool operating on a booking system which worked fine for me. Hotel central to the main shopping area within Stranraer. All things considered, a decent stay.

    Lovely old fashioned Hotel

I have been coming to this hotel since 1964 and I am very glad to say it has hardly changed. Some people may not like that, but I do. The important things have been updated like the bathroom but really the rooms are the same. My husband and I had a double room suite on the top floor with lovely views. Of course once the views were magnificent of the big ferries coming in and going to Ireland, hundreds of cars embarking and disembarking abd the train coming in. Now all that is gone, but it is still a lovely view but deserted and quiet. Nice old fashioned furniture and chinz covers and dated wallpaper. Love it, everything cant be modern and plastic premier Inn. This is a bit of history and one of the last family run hotels. It had fantastic heating in the bedroom, a good modern bathroom and very comfy beds. The hotel has a lovely big still grand dining room and a very good menu. The food was excellent and breakfast was good. All the staff were so attentive and lovely, particularly the receptionists (that makes a change) and the young porter was so helpful and sweet and the night ported very kind and helpful. This was a lovely restful 3 days and boy did we need it. An oasis of faded grandeur and old fashioned genteel service. If you want modern dont go here. If you want days gone by then this is for you.
