¡Recomendable!

Lovely hotel, with some blips in designOverall, a comfortable hotel with lovely service and a great location. I would stay here again. It's a solid romantic getaway spot, particularly because of the balconies and the posh restaurant downstairs, and the good drinks (and the room service -- surprisingly rare in Bay Area hotels). For those coming from other places, I would stay here if I wanted to be in downtown Palo Alto and money wasn't an issue. For vacationers who are not location-sensitive or business travelers there are probably hotels that are a better fit for the price. For more details -- keep in mind that this review is relative to the price point, so many of these complaints would be petty elsewhere! Bathroom -- the bathroom furnishings are lovely and comfortable. The design is aesthetically pleasing. The shower is very pleasant and the natural wood is really nice. Not having a tub is a bit of a disappointment. I know it's typically Japanese to separate the shower and tub, and there's limited room, but I still would have liked a tub! Service -- very friendly and very competent. They needed more staff, though, as one person was clearly doing front desk and running food and things like that -- which makes it tough to keep the level of service high enough to justify the price point. That said, the people who work here are clearly top-of-the-line in terms of experience, skill and ability. Bathrooms -- The toilet is extremely fancy (it's a Toto with a built-in bidet) which was a mixed bag -- since I was there for a staycation, it was fine. However, I have a sort of general distaste for things in hotel rooms that automatically light up and make noises, even soft ones, that aren't easy to turn off. Little things like that can wake you up in the middle of the night and, while the tech is cool, sometimes you just want something analog that isn't thinking for itself and making weird little spraying noises and moving around. Still, this is a taste issue moreso than an issue with the hotel. Business travel / outlets -- Similarly, for a staycation, it was decently appointed, but I found myself wishing there were more outlets near the bed and would have been annoyed if I had to do serious work. There are outlets on one side of the bed and USB chargers only on the other side, so if you just wanted to plug your laptop in on one side of the bed rather than the other, you were SOL. Or if you wanted to use your phone's charger rather than a USB charger, out of luck. And the desk is a bit shallow and small for a laptop. So, not an ideal business travel experience, but again, part of this is a taste issue -- the minimalism of the design and the lack of a dozen obvious outlets is really nice aesthetically. Lights / comfort / room design / sleep -- The bed was really incredibly comfortable and a great size. No complaints there at all! The furniture was also all very comfortable and nice. The air temperature was always pleasant and easy to control the thermostat. The tech in the room is cool, it's neat to be able to control the lights with buttons. The blinds are really great, very cool to have automated blinds and they blocked the light well. The lights were kind of complicated and the settings always assumed that I wanted the blinds a certain way if I wanted the lights a certain way and that was a minor hassle. You can control the lights from bed, but not the blinds. So if you ask the room for "night" (meaning, turn the lights pretty much off), it puts the blinds down, and if you don't want them down you have to get out of bed to put them up. This is a wildly petty complaint, obviously, but see above about the price point! Similarly, there are things that don't quite fit or are difficult to deal with in the room, like tables that are kind of functionally useless and a fridge drawer that doesn't fit some of the dishware. Television -- the television is really, really huge. Like it takes up almost an entire wall. This is kind of an odd design choice in a minimalist hotel! It also, frankly, makes a lot of TV shows look awful because the streaming quality varies and on a huge TV, that's really notable and shows look pixelated or odd. You get the choice of watching TV THAT IS SO HUGE THAT YOU ARE WATCHING TV AND IT IS TAKING OVER YOUR ROOM or you get a big black square that you can see from every angle. It was cool sometimes but kind of annoying at other times because I couldn't just low-key have something on to glance at it, it's literally as tall as me! It was a room completely dominated by the TV or nothing. Also, it's a smart TV, but doesn't get Hulu, just Netflix and a few other random streaming services, and that kinda sucked. Again, petty, and a matter of taste, but again, at the price point... The food -- the food from Nobu and the kitchens was always fantastic. You pay for it, too, there isn't too much that's affordable here, but it generally seems reasonably priced for what you're getting, which is top-of-class food. Ironically, the sushi seemed the least impressive of everything I had! It was fine, just not as knock-your-socks-off good as everything else. They also have good prices for beer and soft drinks, as well as in-room snacks, so it's not too crazy. Not as many reasonable wines as I would have liked, particularly for a CA hotel. Room service -- It was complicated and kind of irritating to get room service because they're understaffed and no one is 100% sure what the menu is or what's available for in-room service. The breakfast and lunch menus are also quite limited, there are just a few items available and at this price point, that's not great. The food we did get was fantastic and well-worth the price, so, again, this would be a petty complaint, except that for the price point you expect a bit more variety (e.g. the availability of a hot breakfast of some kind). It's also the case that there are multiple tables, none of which is really big enough to be useful (e.g. to hold an entire room service tray AND let you take things off of the tray). The little tables aren't really big enough to hold a full sized plate so with two people, one of you ends up eating off a huge heavy tray or off of your lap. And there's no room service table like you get at some hotels. Drinks -- The drinks are also very good. The bar is top-notch and it shows. Balcony -- The balcony is really nice. No complaints there! It's in downtown Palo Alto, so it's not private at all, but it's still a decent view and kind of cool to look out at all the activity. The door to the balcony is unnecessarily complicated, but I figured it out. Location -- The location is good; downtown Palo Alto is nice and quiet at night (although I don't know how quiet it would be post-pandemic -- it's around a bunch of busy restaurants -- but the rooms themselves were very quiet.

Great place to stayI travel there once a month to see patients and clients. The concierge, Colleen, takes wonderful care of me on each visit. Proximal to great food, gyms and shopping. Worth every penny. This is definitely my go to when in Palo Alto.

Clean room, private balcony, helpful staff, convenient location to restaurantsThe Toto toilet is nice and having a balcony added to the experience; its a good option if you need to stay in the area for business and prefer a smaller hotel as I do. The location offers proximity to plenty of restaurants and shopping within walking distance. Keep Nobu in mind or give it a try. No complaints, just nothing in particular that has me chomping at the bit to return.
