Amazing stay worth the moneyIf you have the budget, staying at this ryokan is a no-brainer. Definitely the highlight of my Japan trip, and a stay I will remember for a lifetime. If you want to experience what it is like to feel like to be a VIP and have people go above and beyond for service... Shogetsutei is the place. Came here for 1 night on a honeymoon and truly a 5 star rating for comfort, service and food. Although it is one of the most expensive stays I have ever done, I felt it was well worth the splurge (and even then, it is still less expensive than some other ryokans I've seen in Japan and offer more competitive value with their packages). We got a Superior Room which was extremely spacious for 2 people, clean, had a great view and attractive furniture. Booked the private onsen which was seriously the BEST experience ever as a couple (and absolutely stunning - true to photos seen on website). I also went to the public onsen in the hotel which you have access to.... went on a morning after breakfast, and it may as well have been private as I was pretty much the only one there for 1.5 hours. I didn't even need to try the other public onsens around Kinosaki Onsen with how great these were at the hotel. Service was top-notch and representative of the best in Japanese hospitality from the moment you step on the property. Seriously, the staff go above and beyond to help and recognize small details (e.g. remembering what food preferences even when it was trivial, provided complimentary pair of chopsticks for my spouse and I because we mentioned it was our honeymoon). Probably the closest I would feel to a celebrity VIP client. Lastly, the food, which is so fancy that it might as well be eaten at a Michelin restaurant. I upgraded one of the meals to the Tajima beef, and holy, I don't think I've ever eaten a piece of meat like this. The dishes were all beautifully crafted and contained some of the freshest ingredients (e.g. thanks to the vast seafood Kinosaki Onsen is blessed with in the area) I have ever eaten in my lifetime. I'm sure I took a million photos to remember one of the best meals. Our attendant Misaki-chan also took great care of us, explaining each of our courses in detail using very good English. Our menu was also translated in English for us. Buffet breakfast was also AMAZING - and this is coming from someone who does usually like buffets. There was LOTS of variety and had a mix of Westernized and also traditional Japanese dishes. Although the dishes were simple, it contained some of the best foods I had (i.e. the best corn soup I have ever had was here). I would do anything to have a taste of this buffet again. Lastly, we had private in-room massages which was really neat. It was a little much for me, but my husband loved it so much due to his chronic back pain. The only reason why one would be crazy enough not to stay here would simply be because of budget. But I think if there is one thing to enjoy when coming to Japan, it should be a ryokan, and this would certainly be a top choice (in addition to coming to Kinosaki Onsen). I hope there will be another opportunity to revisit this ryokan one day.

Relaxing hotel with private onsensRelaxing stay at this onsen hotel, booked a traditional Japanese room with private onsen. Stay included breakfast and dinner which were excellent and seafood heavy (it's a seafood city!). Rooms were some of the largest I've ever seen in the world, let alone Japanese standard, great for families. The service was superb and the hotel was well kept. The hotel is located at the end of the main street (maybe 2-3km walk end to end), there's a bus that takes you to and from the train station and the main street has lots to see. Something to note, the traditional rooms pack your beds away during the day, so if you are the type of person that likes to go home during the day to relax on the bed, it might be an issue but I'm sure there's a solution, wasn't a problem for me.

Excellent Onsen Hotel in Kinosaki OnsenOur second visit to Kinosaki Onsen. The Onsen in hotel is definitely better than the public bath associated with the Onsen pass. Hotel guest in this hotel could also visit the Onsen of the sister hotel as well as using the lounge. This hotel is more spacious. Comparing to other onsesn hotel, this is way above average. Food and service are good. The snow crab dinner in room is very nice.

Like a leaf from fairy-taleIt was highlight of my trip to Japan. I'll speak of food first being a vegetarian. The breakfast was exuberant, rooms were traditional yet luxurious, staff courteous - Hotel gives you complementary kimono & geta sandals to try out. it was truly a magical experience.
