So much potentialVisited for our anniversary using a Groupon voucher. The hotel is a magnificent building with so much potential but is sadly in need of refurbishment and having the love put back into it. The positives were the staff who were all friendly and helpful and also the food for breakfast and our evening meal. The negatives our room had numerous damp patches, was cluttered with unnecessary furniture, had a leaking radiator and no hot water just luke warm. Also the lock on the bedroom door was ridiculously temperamental. We reported the damp but there were no rooms to change to and when we mentioned the hot water we were told it was hot everywhere else We had a couple staying with a dog in the next room who barked off and on throughout our first night and then consistently from 6am the following morning. We did raise this with staff acknowledging it wasn't the hotels fault and it was dealt with. The common spaces were large with plenty of seating but we did not use them as they were cold. The main lounge had a wonderful log burner but it was not lit the explanatory notice on it blamed birds nesting but surely this is the wrong time of year. As we stayed here on a deal for 2 nights bed and breakfast and one evening meal it was OK value for money but had we been paying full price I would not have been happy. Such a shame so much potential

Very WelcomingStayed here for one night on a Brit stop. Just on our way home from doing the NC500. We booked a table and we were dealt with by a young girl in the bar, she was so helpful and polite and friendly. The other lady, apologies for description, had a foreign accent. She was amazing. Considering we were only lodging in the car park, she made us so welcome with our two dogs, we were so relaxed, we had a two course meal and plenty of drinks before going off to bed. Many thanks for a very pleasant stop off.

Family lunchBooked this as we were staying at Stanhope and it is 22 years since the wife and I last visited this establishment. It was also the first place my wife had tasted whitebait. She's never forgotten how much she enjoyed them. I looked up the place and when I checked the menu whitebait was still on the menu. I emailed and Ramona replied with a booking confirmation. We travelled over for our 2pm booking. We arrived early but were shown to our table and drinks order was taken. A lovely log fire roaring in one part of the room. The lovely lady then took our starter and main course choices but explained that the chef wouldn't be on until 2. Food duly arrived and the wife once again loved the whitebait. In fact we all enjoyed our starters. Main courses arrived and once again served with a smile by the lovely lady. I did ask her name but didn't quite catch it. In the meantime a young man appeared and saw to the rest of our stay. We ordered desserts which again were very tasty. The waiter was also very pleasant. We enjoyed every aspect of the meal and the service. Thank you for a lovely afternoon. Hopefully it won't be another 22 years before we are able to call back.

Weekend breakStayed for one night on 24th October we upgraded to a four poster bed room and got the key for room 18 check in was quick.dinner and breakfast booked as we checked in NHS barcode available or details taken as per each guest shown to our room by a very covid minded member of staff fire was lit in the bar and managed to get a seat there eventually pint of amstel £4 Ate in the bar but restraunt is open on a Friday and Saturday food very good I would recommend bramble pate (even though its a strange colour) and the duck. Breakfast was good but service depended on which staff member you got we were asked if we wanted cereal but waitress did not inform us there was yogurt, fruit and porridge no mention of fruit juices and I had to ask if poached eggs were available next table was told of all of these choices all in all we enjoyed our stay building is in need of some redecoration but we would stay again and would say the price we paid for our room was reasonable

Pleasant country HotelStayed for 3 nights in early October. Room clean and comfortable but needs updating as does the whole hotel. Breakfast very good and we had dinner in the bar one evening, food and drink all very reasonably priced. A fire in the lounge and bar would have made a huge difference. Staff all very friendly and available when needed. The place just needs a bit of TLC, but I suppose investment must be difficult in these uncertain times. Would happily stay again on a future date.
