Great location and rooms!I stayed 5 nights at the Nan Guo hotel in Guangzhou during a Fair in the city. I am very much satisfied with the rooms, comfort of the beds, epsecially the pillows and the bathroom. Amenities were exactly what I needed and a nice addition was the free mineral water and pears in the room. Breakfast was rather very very poor for a 5 star hotel, especially for an European. But generally hotel was really ok and location was really great. A big minus is the english level of all staff.

Comfortable HotelStayed at the Nan Guo Hotel during the April 2013 Canton Fair. The Hotel is clean and comfortable, the rooms are spacious and well equipped. The hotel provided buses to and from the Fair. Be very clear at the end of the day where the bus pick up is. The Hotel staff are helpful and willing but language, understanding English, was sometimes a problem. Breakfasts were adequate but basic. This is an area where the Hotel does need to improve to meet Western expectations in regards to food temperature, availability of crockery and cutlery. The Hotel has a pleasant outlook but the swimming pool area looks to have been unused for some time. Take the location information with you. Most taxi drivers did not know the Hotel which is located a bit of a distance from the city center, luckily taxi fares are inexpensive. For what you pay the Hotel represents reasonable value.

Great NeighborhoodDuring Canton Fair, I couldn't find any hotel close to the Pazhou complex. I did some research and found this hotel. My first impression was "damn it's typical Chinese style", not of my choice. However it wasn't so bad. The hotel needs renovation. Beds are hard and old, bathroom was fine but needs improvement. Room floor carpet is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. The staffs were very nice and spoke little English at the front desk. The rest of the staffs didn't speak English. WiFi was good since every room had it's own router. Once you are out of your room you are at the mercy of a common WiFi, which wasn't that good. Very poor TV program, only Chinese local channels and paid per view movie. Breakfast was bad. Very few selection and none western. Chinese guests would do just well with the breakfast. I asked for a scramble egg and was denied. The positive are: 1) Nice Shuttle to and from Pazhou Complex at fixed time. You have to check with the front desk for the departure and pick up hour. This is very very convenient since the Taxi is a rip off during Canton Fair. 2) The hotel is located in a very nice, quiet and exclusive neighborhood. So walking around is safe and enjoyable. 3) A lot of nice restaurants can be found within 15 minutes walk. There's a place called Kaixuan New World with plenty of restaurants to choose from. I would definitely come back to this hotel if a room renovation is done. Otherwise it will be just a back up.

4 star rating in name onlyThis is not a 4-star hotel. The service provided at the hotel was minimal at best. Extremely poor breakfast. Had it once and skipped the rest of the trip. The in-house restaurant for dinner was abysmal. Very poor wifi reception; laptop would only connect via Ethernet cable, and iPhone could not download/upload photos. Continually had to be refreshed and rebooted to continue service. Rooms are adequate, but beds hard. Bathrooms are fine if you can look past the slapped together look and dodgy repair work. Hotel is close to a train station, but not many restaurants or shopping near by. Hotel is convenient for the Canton Fair, and has a twice-daily hotel. The staff member running the shuttle was very knowledgeable and had excellent English skills. Staff at reception counter had little English; any other staff could not speak at all. Attempting to get a taxi from or to the hotel was difficult. Many did not know the hotel, and the staff were not very adept at getting a taxi to its out of the way location when we needed to leave. I would recommend having the hotel address written in Cantonese to ensure drivers know the address.

Room To ImproveStaying there every time I come into Guangzhou to visit our company for Business. Its seems during each visit the staff capabilities lack basic common sense. When did any business lounge completely close at 9:30pm. Especially when your on a global international hotel. In a conference call in the executive lounge conference room when some young girl interrupts and tells me the lounge is closing. It appears more and more when I visit China, that the Chinese Hotels that were once a international brand now taken over by Chinese staff have no basic understanding of who is the customer, they have this mindset that you should be the one grateful that they let you stay there
