Nice rooms; reasonable pricesThe Nagoya Garden Palace is a reasonably priced (breakfast included in room rate) hotel located in the entertainment district of Nagoya, equally distant from the Sakae and Hisaya-odori subway stops. As such, the neighborhood around the hotel appeared livelier at 10:00 pm at night than it did at 3:00 pm in the afternoon. The hotel itself is nicely decorated and appears to be recently updated - both in the corridors and in the rooms. Everything seemed sparkling clean, including the lobby and breakfast area. The rooms had the standard amenities - wired internet, refrigerator, hot water pot, robes, slippers. The room we stayed in had a queen bed, but one side was up against a wall, which certainly reduced the comfort / access factor. Room size was typical of two person hotel rooms in Japan - certainly adequate except for the bed placement. We arrived at the hotel at 1:50 pm and were not allowed to check in until 3:00 pm. I understand check in times, but this seems a bit rigid - we were not told the room was not ready. We were just told we could not check in. The breakfast area has plenty of both Japanese and Western choices, but the seating area is small relative to other Garden Palace hotels we stayed at during our recent tour of Japan. The location of the hotel provides good access to all the hotel guest could want, but it is definitely a cab ride, not a walk from the JR Nagoya station. Both aforementioned subway stops are in walking distance - about 10 minutes - from the hotel. There are many, many dining choices in easy walking distance of the hotel, and for those who need some caffeine, there is a large Starbucks on the northwest corner of the intersection at which the Hisaya-odori subway stop is located.

Convenient locationI stayed here for work in March 2016. The hotel is conveniently located just a short walk away from Sakae and Hisaya-Odori subway stations and a few minutes walk from the Centrair Limousine bus stop (Sakae) from the airport. It is clean, comfortable at a basic level, has free wi-fi and offers a good breakfast selection - especially if you like Japanese breakfast... maybe not so good for UK style/tastes. Visiting from UK be prepared for the fact than nobody on staff here seems to speak any English at all. This makes getting information a bit difficult. There was also no English-language tourist literature available in the foyer when I visited. I arrived, exhausted, a couple of hours before check-in and although my room was available I was required to pay an early check-in fee before I could use it. I also never really got to the bottom of whether you can eat dinner in the hotel's restaurant in the evening! While looking for dinner on my first night, I tried to enquire at the restaurant which was hosting a very large and noisy party of Japanese men... a member of staff using a translation phone app asked me if I would like to fall down??? (At this point, I gave up... there are lots of eateries nearby and a convenience store just a block away - go out of the front door and turn right, keep walking till you see it, on a corner... plenty of recognizable food here if you can't face a restaurant meal after your journey.) I believe I was accommodated in this hotel because it is a popular, good value hotel for visiting teachers, academics, etc. I would certainly stay there again, however, because it was so convenient for the subway (which gets you anywhere you want to go in no time at all). If you want a not too expensive place for visiting Nagoya (Japan's third city, with a lot of interesting things to offer tourists), go for it!

Tiny roomRooms in Japan are usually pretty small but this was very small. My wife and I shared the room and had to be creative with where to put our luggage so it wasnt in the way. It was however clean and quiet and the morning breakfast was ok.
