Old school hotel with nice spa area

There were some good things and some bad. The good things first: - The nature around the hotel is beautiful and theres a small beach, playground, walking path, tennis court, etc. - The Thai garden restaurant is really excellent. Great food, good service and not overpriced. - The spa area was nice and there were water sport screens, and all kinds of pools and saunas. - The room was nice and clean and the staff was quite nice. The bad: - The second bed in the room is hard and squeaks. - I could not reach the restaurant for room service, because it was too busy and so they made me come down there and order and I still have to pay the room service additional charge. - The breakfast is way too busy considering Corona and the selection is minimal. - Parking is not free and the coffee for breakfast is horrible. Theres also only one choice.

    Finlands worst hotel

Me and my wife had a weekend in here in November 2020 and I have never felt myself this tired after a weekend! First of all when we arrived the room wasnt anything like in the pictures. It was renovated last time probably in the 90s. We didnt want the room to bother us, so we headed to the spa. The spa area can be a kind of way nice because if you are sentimental about Eurodance music etc. because they have kept all the best pieces also from the 90s. Anyway, in a sign they inform that the water temperature is from 30°C to 36°C depending of the pool. But in the biggest pool the temperature is only around 20°C and none of the other pools can match the expected temperature either. After the ice dipping we came back to the room and I thought myself Im going to have a glass of wine. First I opened a piccolo bottle of white wine (8) and tasted it. The white wine didnt taste anything or maybe it had a slight winegary taste in it. My wife said that dont let that bother you - we are on holiday so I opened a piccolo bottle of red wine (8). That didnt taste anything at all either. I watch the bottle label and it was printed 2017, not labeled but printed. Then I googled these wines and found out that the white wine doesnt even exist, so its probably kitchen wine what is normally used in the cooking (should have known from to label). And the red wine was been in the hotel warehouse or on the room table for the last 3 years. I call in the reception and they said alcohol products never get old so you are wrong but we can change them if you want?. Yes, please. The cleaning lady then brought me a new red wine and a white wine. I only opened a new red wine, which was totally different than the first one, and it was a decent wine. Then we headed to the one of the hotels restaurants. The hotel was fully booked due the COVID-19 so there was only one restaurant (Rucola) which took us in without reservation. The downside was that we had to wait in the corridor for one hour before they let us in. There was plenty of people waiting outside the restaurant and they all were pondering why one of the hotels restaurant (Tammikellari) is closed if the hotel is full?!... When we got in both me and my wife ordered pasta dishes because this restaurant were suppose to be an Italian. My wifes ravioli was flooded over the sauce which didnt even taste very good and my wild pork tagliatelle tasted like a microwave dinner. So, not very good this one either. Then we thought that now its a good time to go to sleep. The bed felt very cheap and outdated (probably from the 90s) and it was squeeky while turning around. Sheets felt hard and if I understood right they dont have queen or king size beds?... There was no air condition in the room and electical heated radiators made night very uncomfortable. For cooling down the room we opened the window in the middle of the night but there was a lot of birds shouting outside. So in the middle of the night we were thinking should we go home for the night - this was actually possible because we live only 15km away from the hotel (our kids were on their grand parents so this was our time off). Well... We didnt and we stayed there for the night. In the morning I dont even remember when was the last time I have felt myself so exhausted. Half a night I slept without fresh air and the other half I didnt sleep. At the breakfast there was a waffel station in the corner which was nice but the coffee was terrible. The coffee was like bitter and lame at the same time. Otherwise there was nothing special at the breakfast, just regular stuff. When we checked out we tried to tell about the night first. The answer was because of the summer some rooms might still have bad air in them and because we dont have air condition it is what it is... I dont know what the summer has to do with the hotel room air in the middle of November (after all this is Finland) so we didnt say much more about our visit. The hotel tries to be Finlands leading hotel. I write this review because normally Finland and Finnish people are famous about keeping their promises and we hate when somebody brakes them. This hotel is hypocracy at its best!

    Mediocrity

This is a famous hotel but it will loose its reputation without modernization. It is like an old cruise ship, pretty much everything needs update. The remodeled suites were the only exception; they are really nice. Everything is overpriced, too with Soviet Union style offering options and service.

A bit overpriced hotel with spa being a highlight

Overall it was a nice stay. The legendary hotel boasts its spa and for a reason, really not much to complain. The surroundings are beautiful, making it especially nice for family time or romantic walks around. Some people complain about breakfast/staff - I guess this has been fixed, because there were great options to choose from, food was fresh and staff efficient. There was live music in the lounge during our stay which was a nice edition. We only tried "rucola" restaurant which was good enough and accommodating (we had 2 babies). Saying that, children room was also a nice surprise, even though many toys were not working as should. On the negatives, the hotel generally feels a bit outdated and far from 5* - more like 3 with some amenities missing. Lack of towels in the spa (you have to bring your own), paid parking and twin beds (at least that's what we got as a family and hotel didn't look packed). We tried classic massage and both were left disappointed, it wasn't good nor it was a good value. Definitely there is room for improvement, but you'll still enjoy it if you go without very high expectations.
