Not a Happy ExperienceThis was booked, for 2 nights, by my partner on a well known budget travellers website. We booked the day before we arrrived. On arrival the reception staff were unaware of our booking. We eventually took a non AC room - number 109. The room was damp and very musty. The bath took ages to drain. The bedding of the bed closest to the door has traces of extraneous matter - possibly woodworm. We checked out after one night.

Bad ExperienceAn unpleasant experience to an otherwise very enjoyable stay at Bali. We reserved 2 rooms for 4 nights. On our arrival, hotel said they have reservations for 1 room only. Our party of 4 squeezed into 1 room for 1 night and checked into another hotel. After our vacation, we tried to get our money back. Staff turned around and said we choose not to take the 2 rooms so we have to be penalized. Although the matter was eventually resolved to my satisfaction, it was not without much effort on my part. I am glad our taxi driver who was privy to the whole conversation was willing to come forward as our witness. I am displeased that the staff told an outright lie and tried to shift the blame to me. Hotel was in our opinion dingy but breakfast was good. I do not recommend this hotel.

Friendly staff, room OKWe arrived in Pedang Bai late afternoon and this was the fourth hotel we tried, all the othes were full. The staff at reception were friendly and helpful. The rooms were large and fairly clean. the bathroom was nice and the shower worked well. We didn't use the pool but it did'nt look too clean and the surrounding tiles were very slippery with moss. The free breakfast was good.

Pretty HorridWe returned from the gorgeous Gilis and thought we would stop in Padang Bai for a few days to see the area. trudged down along the right of the harbour, viewing over priced, nasty rooms until we settled on Mustika. The room was very large and air-conditioned. we handed all our washing over, thereby entrapping ourselves for two nights. The bathroom was floating in brown water hence the mosquito conference, which had spilled into the bedroom. after exterminating all the mozzies we closed up the bathroom and kept the door closed (there was an open window) We wore thongs in the bathroom at all times. Both of us had an upset stomach (do NOT eat at the 'Grand Cafe' Padang Bai) and convalesced in the air-con (my chest ached by the time we left). The staff were nice, they offered to fetch a doctor and brought us a buavita guava juice (for the stomach). The place was derelict and way past its use-by date. The pool looked scary, but we did see some people brave it for a diving lesson. There was some hideous rock n roll PUMPING from the restaurant one night, but i can't imagine who would have been there. I'm sure there are MUCH nicer places in Padang Bai, but for us we would recommend it as the gateway to the Gilis only, or head in the opposite direction. We couldn't wait to get out of there and back to the comforts of Ubud. Oh, we also swapped rooms (upstairs) across the common space immediately as the one they had allotted us had an air conditioner that was as noisy as a generator..

Hidden decaying gemNo one seems to know about this place anymore, yet it's really the only attractive, quiet and stylish place on the beach strip. That's because it doesn't actually front on the "beach" (which is really only for docking boats anyway) but is tucked away behind Topi Inn (the driveway is just after the Inn and before the road turnoff to Bloo Lagoon) in a garden of its own. Thus it's still in town yet a world unto itself. The hotel itself consists of spacious tiled rooms with terraces on two floors in two buildings (the rear building has no view, but the upstairs of the front building looks out over a wild tropical garden to the bay and out to Lombok). Rooms are clean, beds excellent, large baths with bathtub/shower and hot water, even TV and minibar, choice of fan or a/c. They're letting things deteriorate slowly but everything still functions fine and there's still charm to it. Pool is unsurpassed in Padangbai and well maintained. We had it to ourselves for three days. Staff is friendly and helpful, good massages, competitive prices for hired cars. Price is ridiculous for this quality and beats the rest of the beach hotels, which are either cheap pits or vastly overpriced and cramped. Take advantage of the place while it holds up, and before it goes to pot or someone invests in a serious renovation and raises the rates.
