Unexpected but pleasant stay at the hotelMy family and I ended up in Avallon by chance. Stumbled upon this hotel on a website and stayed there with our dog for a night. Everything was amazing, from the bedroom to the restaurant and food. We felt comfortable and welcomed.

Disappointing dinnerWe stayed nearby and went to Moulin des Ruats for dinner. Not an especially warm welcome and the food was disappointing. The sole had a vanilla sauce, which does not go. Everything else was rather flavourless. The setting is lovely - right next to the Cousin River and very shady. We cannot really comment on the hotel accommodation, as we did not overnight there.

Delightful setting,, lacks a chefThe room we had booked turned out to be too small so we moved to room 18 which was spacious and clean with a large balcony at the front of the hotel. At the back, the setting for the restaurant next to the river and opposite the woods is a delight, offering spacious seating outside in the dapplied shade. The public rooms are attractive and clean. The female receptionist was very helpful. The owner was absent on our first night and the chef, if there was one, probably was too, as the food was very poor and served by a scruffily dressed waiter. Coffee was good but via a machine. There were insufficient croissants and no yogurt at the buffer breakfast both mornings of our stay. The owner arrived for our second night, acknowledged us without lifting his eyes from the desk as we left for our second and last evening meal at a restaurant in Vezelay. With such an amazing canvas, this hotel should be an obvious winner but it just seems to lack the will - definitely a stay but eat out place.

A disappointment. The location is excellent, right on the river in the middle of extensive woods and the public areas were good. However, our room (No.6) was tiny and tired. You have to swing round one of the beams to get from one side of the bed to the other, and don't expect to have a shower unless you're well under 5 ft tall. The breakfast was OK but although the dinner menu looked interesting, the foold was bland and overcooked. A disappointment.
