Really helpful managerThe manager helped us to organise the delivery of our bag to the next accommodation and cook delicious breakfast to take away as we had to wake up very early and we did not have time to stop to have breakfast.

Good place, bad sleepStayed for two nights in this place. The bathrooms and shower rooms were very clean and the staff was easy to communicate with. The surrounding area is nice to walk around. However, it is far away from a train or metro station. Thankfully, a bus stop is 5 minutes away and you can get to the main places and stations from there. If you stay there don't forget to get the day bus pass as you will need it. The hostel has 4 rooms. 3 on the top floor from which two of them are adjacent and one on the bottom floor. Our sleep was awful as we were placed to a room where next to it was a couple with a baby which of course as a baby cries multiple times over the night... Due to the nature of these Japanese buildings, the insulation is non existent and you can hear everything. I do not get why the staff did not account for that and place them on a more isolated room. Note also that there are some restaurants around and on a holiday people leave drunk and chatty very late.

Made my experience in Kyoto much more pleasant and memorableLocated in a lively traditional street, the place offers the best touch of Kyoto's culture. The staff are incredibly supportive, kind, informative (about almost everything!) and speak English like native. Beautiful courtyard with very clean room, bathroom and shower. Take into account that it is far from the city center but there is a bus stop nearby. In short, the environment and the behavior of the staff made my experience in Kyoto much more pleasant and memorable!

authentic, beautiful, friendlyMosaic is a fantastic Machiya to stay in Kyoto. You get traditional house, bath and a beautiful garden! Everything is so authentic, that we saw real Maiko greeting her neighbors! The staff is so friendly that we were given a chance to have a party in the garden! Hello Mosaic, thank you for hosting us!

Friendly staff and lovely locationThis was the first time we had stayed in a guest house style accommodation and I'm glad we tried it! The staff here were so friendly and happy to talk with us about the local area and help us to plan where to go and how to get there. They spoke English exceptionally well and were supportive of our attempts to use basic Japanese. The breakfast and hot drinks that they made were so delicious, thank you! Really nice to have a home-cooked meal to start the day! Special thank you to the staff member who was so kind to offer us ponchos to cover ourselves during a rainstorm on the day we left the hotel :) It was nice to try the traditional futon style beds on the tatami mats, but as previously reviews mention, the walls of the building are quite thin and it is possible to hear other guests (we were not disturbed by the other guests as they seemed to have a similar schedule to us). Just something to keep in mind if you prefer not to stay in a place where you may see and hear other patrons. Our room was on the second floor and we had a beautiful view of a traditional garden. There was a shared toilet room and sink area for us to use, the shower room and bath were on the ground floor but easy enough for us to access. It was so handy to be able to use the washing machine/dryers to launder our clothes while we stayed here. There were some lovely sights to see within walking distance and we used the bus stop that was about 5 minutes away several times (make sure you always have some loose change on hand to be able to pay the bus fares!). We actually walked from Gion to the guest house one evening (6km walk) because we wanted to stretch our legs. The Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) is only a 20 minute walk away from the guest house too, we were lucky that the staff were happy to watch over our luggage on the day we checked out so we could visit this beautiful sight before moving on to our next destination. Thank you for the pleasant stay!
