Comfy and relaxed atmosphere in a lodge to chill after a day of powder

The staff were absolutely great - very friendly and helpful. We would like to thank the Manager - Matt whom took care of our stay. It has truly a comfy / relaxed atmosphere where you get a chance to meet many other people. It is conveniently located in walking distance to the village and relatively closely for nearest lift (when lift is closed - you need a car to get to the main lifts (ie. Kanko)). Bedroom is spacious for Japanese standards. And not to forget the traditional Japanese bath with view of the back. A good stay in a "non-hotel style/atmosphere. We would like to call attention to cleanliness throughout - something to address in our opinion (ie. no emptying bins in the room or quick bathroom cleaning for 5 days, stairs, etc). The breakfast can be a bit more extensive (and given it's buffet ... first come - first served).

Nice stay. Well loctated. Friendly staff.

My wife and I stayed at the Morino Lodge for 6 nights. This was our second time at Akakura and the first Japanese winter trip of this season. We arrived late and were greeted by Sarah who had apparently waited up for us and gave us a quick guided tour. Reception normally closes in the late evenings. The lodge is well located about half way between Kanko and Akakura village and just down the hill from the Akakura Onsen chair lift (Yodal Information Office). This means it is easy to walk to the lifts and the village for the shops and restaurants. The lodge is fairly old and some parts need a little TLC. The main sign outside has missing panels which, I assume based on online photos, has been like this for some time and the name above the door says New Fujiya which stumped our driver who pulled up to the hotel, decided this wasnt the hotel we were looking for and pulled away. 5 minutes later he changed his mind and took us back. Luckily Sarah was there waiting. The hotel has a nice sized drying room in the basement and a smaller separate room for boards and skis on the ground floor. Rooms are on the slightly small side, good for Japan but smaller than we expected, they clean and comfortable though. We went for a western en suite and I believe (but not sure) Japanese style rooms are also available. No in room drink making facilities. A kettle would have been nice but since this is not always available we bring our own. Netflix on the TV was good though. Rooms are serviced every couple of days. This threw me a little at first as it was the first time I have encountered this. Every other hotel I have stayed in has daily service. Not sure if this is common for European lodge style hotels. Breakfast is included which is a limited but OK buffet. This is one of the areas I would have appreciated something slightly better. The dishes are fixed and a little limited; cereals, bread/toast, eggs, beans, bacon. Juice, coffee and teas are plentiful. While we were there the eggs were either; boiled, scrambled or poached. Would have really like fried eggs. My usually hotel breakfast is fried eggs on toast. As others have said, where this hotel really shines is the staff. Everybody was friendly and very helpful and made our stay very comfortable. This was one of the few stays where guests appeared to be more than happy to hang out at the bar and the communal area. We have stayed at other small hotels where we had the lounge to ourselves most of the time. A minor critique. All the staff are non-Japanese (except possibly one) and temporary which I think excludes them from the village a little so things like the local discount lift tickets are not available from the hotel. All in all we had a very pleasant stay. Would I like a better breakfast? Yes. Would I like discount lift vouchers? Yes. Would we stay again? Yes.

    Love Morino Lodge!! Highly recommend

Our family of five stayed at Morino for four days of skiing and absolutely loved it. The accommodation was exactly what we were looking for - clean, good food and amenities but most of all felt like home. The communal lounge and bar were a great place to have a drink at the end of a long day, or delicious breakfast before heading out. The Onsen was awesome and staff so friendly and helpful. Matt and his wife have done a great job with creating a family atmosphere. The village is perfect, very local with excellent places to eat and of course the skiing was the best. Thanks so much for a fantastic experience, we wish we could have stayed longer.

    Winter wonderland at Morino Lodge

Apologises for my late review We stayed here from the 8th February 2019 for 8 nights. First time visiting/skiing in Japan and we were all very happy to have choosen Akakura Myoko and especially to stay at Morino Lodge. The lodge is amazing, warm and well laid out. With ample space in the dry room and common areas. Our western room was extremely spacious with a beautiful view of the surrounding snow laden trees. The room had Japanese touches throughout, plenty of hanging and storage space and more importantly was warm and clean. The in-house onsen's were a bonus. Inside onsens are large, clean and pleasantly hot. Which is a bonus after the almost unbearable HOT local ones we experienced in Nozawa. The outside onsen was incredible. Sitting in the hot mineral waters with a view of the surrounding winter landscape and often snow flakes floating down onto your face. We loved the lounge area for our apres-ski drink and to chat with the interesting and diverse mix of international and local guests that gathered there at the end of another "best day EVER". Many a story was told. We met some great people, which is why we love to travel. Breaky was tasty with plenty of choice to please all. Porridge, yoghurt, eggs, toast, beans, bacon, cereals, fruit and more. Nightly themed dinners were provided for those that want to stay in. A selection of tea's and coffee were available all day in the common area. As well as a daily freshly baked sweet treat, which are delicious. Its an easy walk into the lovely village plus there is a free service provided by the lodge that can take you into the village, it finishes at 7pm. There are plenty of choices for eating out. Lastly there is Matt, his lovely wife and all the staff. This is what makes Morino Lodge special and a standout. Matts smiling, helpful persona and his genuine desire to ensure that the guests have the best experience at Morino Lodge is outstanding. The repeat business is a testament to that. Thanks again Matt, your a star. We have already booked to be back same time next year.

Morino Lodge - Friendly, great views and location.

We stayed for 10 nights with friends. Our 4th trip to Japan and first to Myoko area. Matt and Jen were super friendly and efficient, so were all the staff. They were always happy to drive us to a restaurant up the street. The room was clean and comfortable and even though we had an ensuite, we used the Onsen downstairs which was great for sore muscles. The breakfast each day was included with enough variety and plenty to eat. The lift near reception was super fast and efficient which was welcomed after skiing. Happy hour from 4-6pm each day was good to sit in the lounge area and enjoy a beer together. Overall our stay was great and even though the snow wasn't the best, we would love to come back in a better year. Thank you.
