quirky and kitschWe booked Mooltan house online when we were about 50km away in the car. The process was easy and quick. getting there the welcome was friendly and well-worn. The couple running this old boarding house have been here 20 or more years and knew their job. They had also collected nick-nacks over that time and it seemed they were all on display! Our standard double room was small with the shared bathroom down the corridor. This was OK as it was advertised as as such. The walls were poorly insulated and it was easy to hear neighbours. Over all a friendly place to stay but not really up to scratch for modern accommodation.

A touch of the 20s with a modern twistWe booked a shared-bathroom double room because there was very little accommodation left on Anzac weekend when we decided to stop over in Hepburn Springs. One of the friendly owners, Jenny, met us and immediately told us wed been upgraded to a studio apartment, which was a delightful and welcome surprise. We were given room 10 on the lower level, with parking directly outside, which had a private bathroom, very comfy queen size bed with electric blanket, plus a quaint small single bed in an enclave ideal if you have a child travelling with you. The room had everything youd want, including a large bi-fold window which let in the fresh air, the beautiful view, and sounds of the mineral springs running below. There was a very acceptable kitchenette with everything youd need for a few days' stay: sink, fridge, microwave, toaster, electric frypan, electric hotplate, pots, cutlery, and a range of crockery. Bring your own coffee plunger and youd be set! The flatscreen TV had a range of channels (which wasnt the case in Ballarat the previous night) plus free wifi. The ensuite bathroom was clean with good hot water pressure and even a hairdryer. However, bring your own soap and shampoo, as thats not included. The studio apartment has a heater and fan, and a lovely old-style dining table and chairs. Also particularly important for us reading lights above both sides of the bed, and a reading lamp above the chaise longue. We felt taken back to the 1920s with a twist of modern living! Its walking distance to the main Hepburn Springs spa and to shops and cafes in the street. Also some very pleasant walks in the surrounding area. Highly recommended!

Looks like the twenties but very comfortable.Nice beds, excellent shared bathrooms , handy kitchen to make breakfast. Feels like you are back in time with the large verandas , library, living room. We love staying in places with character. We rode there by mountain bike from Castlemaine on the Goldfields Track - highly recommended if you are a reasonable rider. Unfortunately Hepburn springs seems to be taken over by people with too much money and crass buildings.

Very inviting, great hospitality.Mooltan takes me back to staying at my grandparents, but with the modern touches that make the stay all the more enjoyable. The studio apartments are spacious and well appointed. Mooltan is central to all that Hepburn, Daylesford and the gold fields have to offer, and only a short walk to the springs.

Nice host, but an eldy weldy property.I was finding the prices of rooms very expensive - dearer than Sydney and I was not willing to pay $300 for 12 hrs! Booking.com showed there was room here so I called to see how much rooms were. We were offered a studio which was about $170, or a room with a shared bathroom for 130. We never normally share bathrooms but it was for 1 night so we booked that. The owner Eddie was friendly, helpful. They have had the property for 29 years. However the property was very dated. I did not find it clean. Carpets were dirty / bedding was old etc. I feel bad saying this as it's a long running business but the cleanliness was not to my liking and everything was very old and cluttered. I took a shower and some one had left 2 baby wipes in the shower and their flannel. My Mum went in after me and cleaned the shower before she used it. The shower room next to room 6 had 2 shower cubicles next to each other - which was a bit odd unless you're a couple. We had a toilet in our room and a mini sink. TV. WIFI. Balcony with a nice view. Kitchen use with coffee and teas. My mum did not have earplugs so she found the noise from the bathroom distracting all night. Also when people came back, the doors tended to close with a heavy bang which was not good when you're trying to sleep. We did not use the lounge / games room.
