Name impliesHot Water Springs ....but there is a catch

Avoid the "luxury villas" 305 has a few basic maintensnce issues including a rather dirty front door step. Private pool advertised on booking.com is actually a shared pool for all the villas. The hot water springs are actually at Avolon Springs next door for which you have to pay extra. Staff were great and friendly but property is a little tired and some of the adverising is a little mistepresenting

Rest & Relaxation nestled in mountains

This beautiful resort is nestled in the mountains of Montagu in the Western Cape. The hot spring waters brings the health benefits besides the fun of frolicking in the various pools all over the place. The staff are friendly and attentive and there are a range of accommodations to choose. From the hotel rooms to the mountain chalets or even the multitude of self catering units and even some villas at the end. After a weekend here, we felt so relaxed and ready for the complexities of the rat race again.

    Xmas at Hotsprings

Although we had inclement weather, the kids enjoyed themselves in the warm water of Montagu Springs. We also were so well situated- right next to the Park where the young kids had access to all the amenities and could play to their hearts content with minimal supervision.

    Disappointed all round

We stayed at 68 Plettenburg chalets (and chalet is not an apt word) it is more like a trailer. The smell when you open the doors to enter will want you to run for the nearest hotel. We are not sure what the smell was from but we suspect mould or something to that effect. It is certainly not spacious as advertised on their website and once you put the air con on the smell gets worse. The benches in the lounge area have old brown cushions which makes your skin itch and the beds are really basic and not comfortable at all. It gets really hot in the trailer/chalet so the air con is pointless and once you put it on the smell is circulated even worse. We kept the door open and put up with the insects. The color scheme is straight out of the 80s and I think that is when last it was attended to. The condition of the trailers or chalets as they call it is also in need of modernization for the prices that they are charging. We as we usually do try to make the most out of any situation but then we wanted to start the Braai and that is where it got even worse. The Braai facility for 68 was pathetically filthy and had cigarettes buds scattered all over it and along the grass with beer bottles lying there. The grill was still layered with fat from who knows when. If you are a clean freak like I am, we brought our own grill but I refused to lay it on top of the filthy grill so I used some bricks in stead. It was raining on our first day so there is no cover for the coal/wood as 68 does not have a tree shielding the Braai. They advised that they can give us a portable Braai but we are not allowed to keep it on the veranda of the trailer chalet which has a roof. So again, not really helpful. We abandoned our Braai and went to the town for supper at a restaurant. I was happy at that because who would want to Braai on a filthy Braai like that. We asked to be moved from chalet 68 and we were told that the others are not any better. That was really shocking to us and we actually discussed it that night and that should tell you all that you need to know about the management at Montagu Springs. I have met Lee-Anne Singer as I am involved with western cape tourism as an independent tour operator owner and accredited tourist guide and I will definitely feed back to her my experience and to my colleagues. I brought along two guests (one from abroad) and they were equally not happy at all. The staff are mostly friendly however there was an exception with one employee at the front desk who only spoke in Afrikaans to me even though I am English speaking which is not professional and I actually found her to be quite rude. Whilst I understand Afrikaans but I do not speak it fluently and a few other languages this employee came across as one who expects to be spoken to only in Afrikaans and if you dont like it then to hell with you. There is no room for such people in a tourist establishment like Montagu Srpings. You either respect all customers and ask if I understand Afrikaans or speak back to me in English. This problem is not unique to Montagu Springs but we found at the restaurant that we visited and the other boutique shops that once we spoke English the Afrikaans speaking person immediately starting talking in English back to us. Which we appreciated as one of my guests does not understand a word of Afrikaans as she is from another country. The WiFi is up and down and unfortunately they only give you 1 gig free which for me is a big no no in 2020 and in the travel industry. You have to pay to use the heated pool at an additional R15 per person per day which is just plain stupid. The heated pool is small - during the day there is hardly any shade so take a hat and loads of sun block but it is really lovely in the evening. Especially if the skies are clear. The Astro turf is a nice touch where you can run bare foot and play multiple sports from soccer, touch rugby, volleyball and even tennis if you wanted to. The two tennis courts are not well maintained but are playable. The cold pool is nice, water was a bit chilly but on Hot days it is great. All in all, this is a place that we will never return to which is rather disappointing because you want to support local small towns like Montagu but our experience and that of my guests forces me to rather look at other alternatives should any of my customers, colleagues, friends or family wish to travel to this region of Western Cape. The price for our two day stay I am afraid lacks immensely in value and there are more better value options for this price point.
