When in ChinaMyself and 11 others arrived at the Mingri Wuzhou hotel from England on a trip to the Great Wall, armed only with 1 word of Chinese, we suffered badly, the staff were well turned out and were keen to help but couldn't understand a word of English. The hotel caters mainly for Chinese so the food and customs are specific and no western food available. The rooms were spacious and toilets satisfactory but the location is not practical for tourists looking for gifts unless that gift happens to be tea, I think this hotel is ideal for work conferences etc but very little to do on a night time except visit a Karioke venue about 800 mts from the hotel. The general area is a mix of the haves and have nots and care should be taken when walking alone at night.

A hotel and location you might overlook - Excellent staff made the trip!In looking at all the hotels Beijing has to offer, as a western traveler, this is a place you would probably overlook. This is not your typical hotel for American travelers; it caters primarily to Chinese. This is a good place to stay if you want a very Chinese experience. The rooms are clean and spacious with the usual amenities, including a good Chinese breakfast - you will not find western breakfast here. The hotel is also quite far from the usual tourist attractions and is not close to a subway station, the closest is at Military Museum - although taxis are very inexpensive in Beijing. The staff had very limited English (and my Mandarin was not much better!). It is convenient in that there are a few banks nearby (hotel does not change money) and there is a Carrefours and KFC across the street. Like much of Beijing, there is quite a bit of construction going on, so there is likely to be new services available soon. It doesn't sound so interesting does it? Well, this hotel is right in the middle of the Maliandao Tea District and is surrounded by tea shops and a fascinating hutong. By 5 am, the neighborhood is humming with tea merchants, the whole area smells of different types of tea, there are beautiful tea sets to be bought, little children sitting on big burlap bags of tea studying and playing, women hand sorting and grading tea. There are lovely little shops which have tea ceremonies and unique small restaurants with regional cuisines. Although off the beaten path, this is a fascinating area. If you can, take the Maliandao Tea Tour to see and understand it all. As for the hotel itself, the thing that makes this hotel so lovely is the staff. Despite a serious language barrier, they went out of their way to assist us. The porter was particularly helpful and everyone refused to accept a tip for work that was above and beyond. We had to settle for offering our sincere thanks.

If you want a local hotel for local people, check in!!!!I recently stayed here as part of a group for a couple of nights. Based on the trip we were undertaking which was a charity fund raiser it was ok but I would have been disapointed to have checked in on a holiday stay of significant length. Not one word of English was spoken which is ok but you can get really stuck, especially as its based right in the middle of the tea district which is non touristy and aprox 30 mins ride to the main parts of Beijing tourist central. The rooms were very clean and the shower was great however the beds are EXTREMELY hard in China and these were no exception. The food was very interesting, rice and noodles for breakfast dinner and tea which is great if you like chinese food, but dont expect bread, eggs, bacon or cereal as we know it here in the uk. No money could be changed here so be sure to have at least some US dollars or Yuan already changed up before you book in. If you want to see local life at its best then this hotel is great for that. A local market which runs to aprox 10pm is just over the road where literally ;anything goes'....live crabs in baskets, chickens, ducks, pigeons...every fruit you can imagine, clothing, shoes and some exotic take away foods on sticks!!!!! Absolutel nrilliant!! But be prepared to be constantly stared at and tried to be ripped off, they dont see many westeners at all in this part of Beijing and so you yourself will become the tourist attraction. The roads are hideous to cross so do take care. One last thing......just up from the hotel aprox 200 yards on the left is a massive club called F6 KTV and club live, which is a karaoke bar with individual rooms available to hire on an hourly basis.....very popular in China and indeed the best entertainment ever it was great fun!!!!

Centre of tea districtWe traveled as part of a group and the hotel was pre booked. Located in the centre of the tea district and opposite a shopping mall with McDonalds, papa johns, Italian and Chinese restaurants among others. The rooms are clean, bottled water and the rather hard beds are turned down each day. The breakfast caters to an Asian palette with a picture attached. 30 people from Ireland in our group and many didnt venture in. The dinner however was fantastic, picture also attached. Especially the ribs dish.

Love it!A Trip Advisor review (below) said "The general area is a mix of the haves and have nots and care should be taken when walking alone at night". Don't pay any attention. I have stayed here numerous times, and visited the tea market hundreds of times. ( I was a Beijing resident for many years). It's very safe, like all of Beijing. The hotel is clean, warm, basic. There is great food across the road in several restaurants, plus ye olde western back-ups of McD and Papa John's. If you're interested in tea, this is a great place to stay.
