    Majestic view, wonderful service

We stayed at the hotel last weekend and the area which was stricken by the devastating tsunami in 2011. Part of our trip involved work so we had the opportunity to experience the hotel from both the business and tourist's perspective. The conference room and facilities were solid, and the meeting room had an amazing view of the coast line. The restaurants were 4-star and service was top-notch. The highlight was the outdoor bath (rotenburo) on the 2nd floor just above the shore. We woke up early and experienced the sunrise at 5:45am while in the bath -- truly amazing. From a pure hotel guest experience we were very pleased. Add in the fact that this area has suffered such tragedy and that the Kanyo Hotel acted as an emergency evacuation shelter for months after the disaster, and it's well worth the visit. Spotless, a bit dated but we will be back.

Traditional Japanese Onsen experience - highly recommended!

The Kanyo Hotel is a lovely, old style Japanese traditional hotel, offering Japanese tatami mat sleeping configurations as well as western bed options as well. Opt for the traditional tatami beds for a great experience. Our room also had an amazing 5 star view of the ocean, and the nearby town that was devastated in the 2011 tsunami. The true draw of this hotel is their Japanese Onsen, or natural mineral spring water baths, similar to western jacuzzis but with no bubbles and chlorine - just thermal hot waters from Mother Nature herself. There are certain rules and steps to using the onsens, but easy enough to learn and utilize. The staff were great and friendly, and the facilities are very clean and organized. I have to say that this resort is more like a vintage 1970s hotel that was kept up really nicely, despite the "older" furnishings, but that's part of the appeal. Overall a great place, deserving of it's already high praise and ranking/stars. Very recommended!

A big onsen ryokan worth visiting

The hotel is a big structure which can accommodate 1200 people. It is the typical traditional Japanese big scale ryokan that has wedding hall and all. Excellent service all round and arrange tour to see the tsunami stricken areas and narrate stories. During the tsunami the hotel also opened its door to let the victims stay, study and bath! The seagulls are an attraction too as you can feed them at your window. Highly recommended.

    Hotel with a deeper meaning

For those who want to experience the hospitality of Northeast Japan, Minamisanriku Hotel Kanyo is a must- visit hotel. The location of the hotel is quite remote nestled at the highway on the hillside. However, guests can readily pre-book its shuttle bus service at Sendai Station and the bus ride takes about 2 hours. Like most onsen resort hotel, it offers comfortable rooms, sumptuous food and onsens with unrivalled panoramic ocean views. However, what make this hotel stands out from others is its kataribe (storytelling) bus tour. With an additional JPY500, one can go on a tour on a bus in the morning to actually see how the earthquake on March 11, 2011 devastated the areas along the sea coast. The tour, though conducted in Japanese only, was educational and meaningful. You can hardly believe your eyes until you actually see the mighty power of the nature. You just realize how powerless that we can never conquer the nature as human being. The hotel also displays lots of photos at the lobby where one can see how the areas have been rebuilt and rejuvenated since the earthquake. The hotel itself has portrayed itself as a good corporate citizen. During the earthquake, it opened its doors for local residents as an evacuation site, built up a library for local children and ran shuttle services to connect with towns nearby, etc. The hotel has fulfilled its social responsibilities and the good deeds it made for the communities worth giving applause and respect.

    Onsen is amazing

Be prepared for a huge, touristy hotel. If you prefer small ryokans with personal touch services, this place isnt for you. Most of their customers come from tour groups. Service was very good and we had no problems during check in check out, or even when we had some problems locating the venue. There was alot of information regarding the 311 earthquake and tsunami disaster in the lobby. We didnt manage to go for it but i think they also provide a bus tour (with a fee) for a more detailed informative tour regarding the disaster. Dinner was however, quite disappointing, given that this hotel is located right beside the sea. The food was somehow more catered to large tour groups and so prepared all at once. Breakfast was great. A normal buffet but with a huge variety, (even alot of versions of coffee lol), sashimi, bread, yogurt etc. To avoid crowds and carry out social distancing, guests were required to wear gloves and mask while taking the food. We also could choose from 3 time slots to minimize the crowd. They also advised us that the tour groups normally take the early slot so it would be better if we take the later ones unless we had to leave early. Appreciated the tip. Rooms were very good. Our room faced the ocean and we managed to see the sunrise right from our huge window. The hotel is a little old but very clean and the futons were put out for us while we were at dinner. The onsen is the selling point of this hotel. They have 2 large onsens, and apparently they alternate the female and male onsens every Wednesday night? We stayed on a Wed and managed to go to both onsens on Wed night and Thursday morning.
