Needs updated but history is greatWe purchased a golf, hotel, and breakfast package through Carolina Golf Association. My husband was anxious for me to play the Donald Ross golf course there, as he had played there a number of years ago; but, he did not stay at the Inn. As golfers, we appreciated the history and the fact that a family still owned it, but it is in serious disrepair. No bell person met us upon arrival. The gentleman at the front desk acted like we were an intrusion on his day. We were given our room key. No elevators, so we carried our luggage up the stairs to our second floor room only to find out they were still cleaning it. We were told to put our suitcases in the closet, and that they would be done in about 15 minutes, which they were. The cleaner was very nice to us and felt bad the room was not done. The inn smells musty, the hallway carpets are torn on the step edges and bunched up in the halls. You have to be careful and not trip over the bumps. The rooms have a mixture of furniture. The bed was okay but the pillows were the cheap, flat, blue and white striped fiberfill ones you get at WalMart. The AC temperature was turned as low as it would go (we were in a 98 degree heat wave), but the room was still warm...made it difficult to sleep. The bathrooms...sink and tub were both rust stained as was the floor around the toilet. The buffet breakfast was not a buffet. Small menu to pick from. Nothing special, and not very tasty or pleasing to the eye. We were not able to eat dinner there the night we arrived because of an event. We did have some nachos and a drink in the bar while we were waiting for the room to get cleaned, and they were good. And, the waitstaff was friendly and efficient. The pro shop personnel were great, but that will be reviewed with the golf course. I would not stay here again. The history is great, but not worth the price.

Great history - terrible accommodations. This hotel has wonderful photos and a helpful and friendly staff. Unfortunately, those features cannot overcome a tired and antiquated building. Some rooms are quite shabby, poor air conditioning - and no elevator.

The Old Lady needs help...We love Mid Pines and Pine Needles - excellent golf courses - but the old Inn needs some serious TLC. The Inn is 100 years old and it is shabby in too many ways to count. Uneven (seriously uneven!) floors, ill-fitting doors and window, ragged carpet, small out-of-date bathrooms, exposed and rusted pipes, antique heating and cooling...the list is long. I am sad because I would love to see this property be what it should be...

Golf yes, hotel noThe hotel looks stately from the outside but as soon as you enter you are hit by the musty smell that never goes away. The carpets are tattered and rippled, the bathroom so small you can sit on the toilet and wash your hands in the sink at the same time. Floors are so uneven that there was a wedge cut from the bottom of our door and secured to the top to make it fit the opening. Pillows are $3 from Target maybe. Beds are okay. It is so damp that there was a jar of DampRid in the closet. Old steam radiator heat so lots of rusted pipes everywhere. May be a good candidate for Hotel Impossible. Bar staff was helpful. You get a discount on golf for staying at the resort but just pay less at a newer nearby hotel and pay the extra for golf. Youll thank yourself. The Donald Ross golf course is in great shape and a great addition to your playlist for a Pinehurst trip.

Play Pine Needles and if you are looking for a budget hotel Mid Pines is okay..First, the good news. The staff is welcoming and friendly and accomodating. But this hotel in Southern Pines shows on the internet much better than the reality. It is an old building with great bones and wonderful potential, but it is in dire need of a total renovation. The first room we had smelled of mold. We requested a second and the air was much better. But the decor is both rooms was old and worn. The bathroom was adequate and there was plenty of hot water. We were told that next year 16 rooms were being renovated... so if you go, ask for one of those rooms. But the hotel needs more than a few rooms renovated. The rugs are worn and pulling up and frankly that is a safety hazard. The food is fine. Again the staff is very accomodating, we asked for a change to one of the items on the menu and the chef came out to say that he was happy to do so. The golf packages are very affordable, so if you are looking a budget stay and play the Mid Pines fills that need. Of the two golf courses on the property. The Mid-Pines course is fun, but needs work. We were told that there are no bunkers on the course - that all sand areas were waste areas. Well, there are waste areas, but there are bunkers. They look like waste areas because there is no sand in them. Now for the really good news. The Pine Needles course is amazing. A recent renovation brought it back to the original design. It is beautiful and the challenge like most Donald Ross courses is around the greens. Once again, the golf staff was welcoming and friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay fun and enjoyable. If you stay at Mid Pines and play both courses, the staff takes care of bringing your clubs between the two courses. Overall it was a good experience, thanks mainly to the staff, but an upgrade to the Inn would make it a wonderful experience. The location is about mid- way between Southern Pines and Pinehurst. There a many dining options in both towns. It is a beautiful area.
