above the train station, very convenientRight above the train station so the location is excellent. Rooms are comfortable, with good beds, heating, fridge, kettle and some nice views. For the price though, no spoons or fresh milk for tea and tried to charge me extra for an early check in, no video on demand English instructions or any English TV stations and no hotel onsen. I think what many Japanese people are not aware of is that places 2 hours away from Tokyo are going to get inundated with international tourists next year for the Tokyo Olympic games and the little things are going to matter. There are other hotels close by that may be more affordable, close to the train station and want the business a bit more.

Excellent location to explore Yamagata and beyondYamagata ain't a mainstream tourist spot, and its main attractions are quite scattered. Most famous ones are at least a train ride away from the city, thus making Yamagata station an excellent gateway to explore them. And, there is no other hotel more convenient than Hotel Metropolitan Yamagata, which situates in the same building as the train station, as well as S-Pal shopping center. As such, there are relatively no weather concern of any rain or snow. There are a good range of eateries inside and outside of the hotel too, as well as on the east exit of the train station across the road. I was allowed to check in around 2.30pm, and was allocated a twin room overlooking west side of the station. It's spacious, with writing desk and a couch that is as comfortable as my bed, and there was even a 4G-enabled smartphone for free usage, supposingly able to go online, as well as making free domestic call and some free international call (for certain countries only), the smartphone can be taken out but somehow, my handset was a defective one, so I didn't bother anyway, after all, I have my own data roaming connection. The room has free WiFi, but connecting speed was pathetic, I have easily 3 to 4 peripherals of Android and Apple interfaces, all of them encountered mediocre connection, I suspect my room is probably far from their common wireless router. For checking emails it should be good enough, but expect intermittent disruption while watching Youtube. Like most other JR East hotels, this one does not offer any onsen in-house, but they provide free aromatic bath lotion packs for use in their big bath tub, as well as 2 bottles of complimentary mineral water. All other necessary amenities are well catered for. My room was equipped with a 43" LCD TV, humidifier, electronic safe, fridge, kettle etc, and plenty of power points. My enclosed breakfast was at Mogami-tei (2F), surprisingly it wasn't a buffet breakfast like most other Metropolitan hotels. Patrons have a choice of either Japanese or Western style breakfast, which I ordered the former. Personally, I actually do not favour buffet breakfast, this was really how I like it! Mogami-tei's setting demonstrated impeccable attention, emphasising usage of premium local ingredients, and presented them in separate saucers. In general, my stay in this hotel was a very pleasant and comfortable one, and overall the room is very well maintained. Having stayed in some other Metropolitan hotels before, I find this one offering better attention on details.

All Amenities, Great LocationAdjacent to both the Yamagata JR Station, and the TripAdvisor #1 rated restaurant in Yamagata, it's a perfect hotel for a short stay. Clean, fairly modern, all amenities, WiFi, paid parking, breakfast, a very good value. Also, the restaurant/club entertainment district starts right across the street. Excellent location.

First class hotel, on top of train station--a cut above the restBig lobby; right off train station; 10 floors or so; a cut above the others like Dormy Inn. Everything is nicer and classier, except the Metropolitans typically don't have onsens. In my opinion, if the price delta between a Metropolitan and a Dormy Inn is less than $50, the former is clearer a nicer spot. The Dormy Inns tend to be just OK except for the plus of the onsens; the Metropolitans are a substantial hotel. The hotel recommended Tatsu Sushi, which was a cab ride away in a cool part of town with several restaurants in a couple square blocks. Tatsu was classic sushi counter. For $40 or so, 8-12 pieces of very good sushi, and a couple other dishes, plus a beer and local sake which was extraordinary. Little if any English spoken, or needed.

Hotel with Zen amtosphereWe love this hotel as the room is so spacious and comfortable with many Japanese furnishing, eg tatami living room and nice Japanese paintings hung on the wall. I felt I am staying in a Japanese home. The living area even has sofa seats for those preferred to sit on sofas. The bed was firm and comfy. The hotel room toilets is very high tech. The toilet bowl cover opens by itself when you walk near it. It will auto close and flush by itself after you walk away from the toilet bowl. The shower is installed with many options of shower jets which is useful after a long and tiring day. It is located near bus stations and Yamagata JR station which makes travelling to any part of the town super convenient. The hotel staff is very knowledgeable in how to go about to the various sightseeing places. I have recommended this hotel to many of my friends and relatives. I would definitely stay in this hotel or Hotel Metropolitan chain of hotels whenever I am in Japan.
