Adequate but not 4-starThe hotel is situated on the Habberley Road between Bewdley and Kidderminster. We booked it for a 3-night break as it appeared convenient for visiting attractions such as the West Midlands Safari Park and the Severn Valley Railway. Location wise this is accurate. However, although the hotel is advertised as 4-star, even allowing for COVID-19 restrictions, we feel it fell far short of this standard. The website said "some services and facilities might not be available", without giving a clue as to how much this would affect our stay. We had paid for "a privilege room" which should have included a free newspaper, towelling robes and slippers. We received none of these, and felt that at least the slippers, which normally come in a sealed pack, could easily have been provided within the current restrictions. Food was takeaway only. For breakfast we were given a paper bag containing just a croissant, blueberry muffin, yoghurt, an apple and a small orange juice carton. On asking about hot drinks, we were told we could make these in our room. We only had an evening meal on one night. There was a very limited menu, and rather than have the food in our room we asked if we could eat outside as it was a pleasant evening. When the food came it was in several paper bags, with plastic cutlery and no plates. To be fair, it was tasty (we had the burger and chicken tikka masala) but the experience was not what we had hoped for when we booked the hotel. Compared with what other establishments are able to provide during the COVID restrictions, we felt the service was extremely poor. The room itself was OK, clean and well presented with a comfortable bed. A couple of electrical sockets were coming away from the wall and need urgent attention (room 27). The general décor of the whole hotel looked a bit tired and in need of refurbishment. At check-in you are given the option of a full (i.e. normal) room servicing or a partial service, which consisted of a plastic bag containing clean towels and tea/coffee supplies left outside your room. This latter option meant you had to remake your own bed and the waste bins were not emptied. We asked for the full service but after our first night only got the partial service. We told the staff at reception about this and they apologised, saying they would sort it for the following day, which they did. However, the tea bags and cardboard cups were not replaced. We did not feel our experience was value for money, particularly as we paid for an upgrade to get facilities which were not provided. We did feel we were in a COVID safe environment, and the staff on reception were as pleasant and helpful as they could be, given the system they had to work with. We feel that with a little more effort, the the guest experience could be improved to make it a more relaxing and enjoyable stay while still keeping within the COVID-19 restrictions..

Struggling to cope but tryingBefore I write the review I want to highlight two reception staff, Richard and Holly, who we found very helpful and went that extra mile for us, heating milk for our boy, printing stuff for us. But that Im afraid is the end of the positives. I booked a 7 night stay for my partner and our 3 year old, basically to use the hotel as a central base and go on different days out. I booked through the Accor hotels app, utilising a lot of points to secure my room. The website boasted about their four star hotel with renowned restaurant and bar. No where on this website does it say they are shut. Booking in was painless, I got my complimentary drinks as part of Accor scheme, but not the other bonuses such as free daily newspaper. Ive never stayed in a four star hotel without a fridge in the room. We had to run back and forth to reception with milk for our child which was quite stressful. Menu for evening room service meal was very limited with zero choices for children. We only used it once. Room was comfortable but not at all clean, all surfaces covered in dust, splashes of wine up the walls, mould on bath tiles. The sink was cracked, behind the bed was an absolute mass of dust. Coffee machine leaked everywhere, told reception who promised to change it, dont know if they did but after 3 days of leakage I never used it again. Pool used a couple of times in pre booked 45 min slots. Was ok. I understand the lack of restaurant and bar is due to COVID-19 and totally accept this. But this needs to be stated explicitly on their website. I also understand the lack of money to invest in the massive overhaul it needs in terms of appearance. However there is no excuse for dirtiness. No excuse for allowing customers into dirty rooms.

An Enjoyable 2 day break in BewdleyHaving stayed here before, We arrived for our 2 day break to find the appropriate COVID 19 Sanitisation etc Immediately located as you entered the front door, we were welcomed by Holly who was very helpful in all our dealings with her over the two days, Our room was located on the first floor again Sanitisation was provided at the entrance to the floor, the room overlooked the car park and the town of Bewdley in the distance, the room was fine with excellent views. We were provided with Breakfast which was takeaway only being given a paper bag containing just a croissant, blueberry muffin, yoghurt, an apple and a small orange juice carton, the basic contents which were a surprise having stayed at the Wetherby Mercure Hotel some 2 weeks earlier were the choice at breakfast was similar but also included Hot Toast, Cereals, along with a choice of hot 3 different or combined breakfast rolls. On the whole we enjoyed our stay with Holly doing her best at all times ( Thank you for this) in the difficult circumstances of the time. The town of Bewdley also offers lots to do and is well worth a good look round.

Poor serviceI recently stayed at the Mercure Hotel and the stay was very poor. First of all our booking wasnt on their system, after a 40 minute wait we were eventually given a room. I originally booked for a classic family room with patio however on arrival this room was taken. We were given a classic room with a double bed instead with no patio, not as much room for activities but I was pretty tired by this point. The radiator was then clicking and banging all night, I decided to count the clicks instead of sheep and eventually got to sleep. If you have OCD I wouldnt recommend staying here because your eyes wont be able to leave the peeling off wallpaper, Ive seen post it notes stick to a wall better than that.

Great staff and facilities. Tired building.Great staff and a good lobby but cleanliness and decor are nothing to be desired. The facilities included access to a pool and gym however an update across the estate would be good. Staff were very helpful and polite. Ideally close to the Safari park.
