You get what you pay for

It would be a mistake to expect the Ritz Hotel at the prices charged at Medehamstede, but saying that, we had a very enjoyable weekend break there. It was the staff who made it so pleasant - without exception they were helpful, cheerful and friendly, and coped energetically with the sudden influx of guests on our coach trip.Hotel itself is looking somewhat tired, but it was very clean, and the large dining room was always laid out beautifully and looked very inviting. Food was average, but again, we weren't expecting cordon bleu, and rooms were clean, beds comfy. Hotel is close to sea, Shanklin town centre and bus routes. If you want a simple, friendly hotel at bargain price, Medehamstede fits the bill.

Weekend away on an organised coach tour

We stayed at the Medehamstede Hotel in Shanklin for a weekend break as part of an organised coach tour of the island. The hotel is located in a quiet area of Shanklin but is well situated for the railway station, seafront and the Old Village areas with all three of these about a half mile walk away. Arriving later than advertised due to a cancelled ferry, the hotel staff quickly booked our coach party into their respective rooms and provided our evening meals in a very efficient manner. Luggage was taken to the upstairs rooms if required saving those of our party with mobility problems any undue struggle. Our room was not large but we had space enough to move around inside, overall the appearance was of a dated room décor but was clean and with some more modern touches. There was a built in wardrobe with hanging space for clothes and a double bed which was very comfortable to sleep in, all of the bedding looked and felt clean. Either side of the bed was a small drawer unit with a table lamp (though mine was not operational), and double plug sockets were provided above the units additionally fitted with USB sockets. A small flat screen television was wall mounted to one side of the room although the on/off functionality of the remote control did not seem to work. Next to the window, a separate table and chair was provided with tea and coffee making facilities. A wall mounted radiator was fitted and was on when we arrived though we turned this off and did not use it for the duration of our stay. The ensuite was again, not large, but big enough for us and had a toilet, basin and shower unit which had a good pressure and flow rate. Plentiful towels were available in the room when we arrived though no toiletries were provided. The bathroom did not have a window but was vented via an extractor fan and a heated towel rail would have been a nice addition. The reception area of the hotel was reasonably spacious and welcoming with what appeared to be some of the original features retained and not looking out of place in more modern surroundings. Of note was an old cigarette dispensing machine incorporated into the wood panelling and also a phone booth. Guest toilets are available in this area as well. The restaurant and bar areas opened off the reception. With the advent of the Covid-19 virus event, bottles of hand sanitiser were provided in this area. On the main flight of stairs to the first floor, a picture taken from an old photograph showed the hotel as it appeared pre Second World War which we thought was a nice touch. The restaurant area is quite large and can accommodate a good number of diners, tables are allocated at check in and remain yours for the duration. During our stay, both breakfast and evening meal times were fixed (8:30AM & 6:30PM respectively), and lasted for approximately an hour duration, so the service is very slick. Like the reception area, the restaurant retains some of its old world charm with what appear to be art deco light fittings are mounted in the ceiling. Bottles of hand sanitiser were provided on a table by the entrance to the room. The breakfast menu was good with fruit juices, cereals, porridge and English breakfast options available accompanied by toast and tea or coffee. The cooked breakfast was well cooked and not greasy and the portion size would satisfy the average appetite. Evening meals were of a three course format with a fairly good menu to choose from (choices are made at breakfast earlier in the day). The meals are of a reasonable standard and the portion size would satisfy the average appetite. Water is provided at the table during the meal but other drinks can be ordered from the bar, via the waiter, if you prefer. We tended to walk along the cliff path to a local bar in the evening after dinner, however on the Sunday night we used the hotel bar where an entertaining quiz night was laid on for the guests staying in. This area was fairly large with a good selection of drinks available from the bar and a small raised stage presumably for cabaret acts when appearing. A large flat screen TV was mounted in the vicinity of the bar. All of the staff that we came into contact with were friendly, polite and helpful especially the dining room staff though of special comment would be James who was the perfect host and seemed to run both the reception and bar areas single handed at times. He was very proactive and organised and kept our party well informed of times and arrangements. In summary an honest and reliable place to stay in Shanklin particularly if you are looking for accommodation with onsite facilities offering good value for money. In our experience, the staff are friendly and helpful and our overall experience was good.

Stayed here on an organised bus tour. Hotel is old but don't judge a book by its cover. Lovely welcome & all staff we came into contact with were polite & helpful. Have to make a special mention to Lisa & Diane who serve in the dining room ; these ladies are amazing food is brought to you always smile & asked if anything else is needed dirty dishes are spirited away & your next course appears like magic. A pleasure to be served by these ladies nothing was too much trouble. A great place to stay central to all amenities.

    Good value hotel

Stayed here for 4 nights as part of an organized group. It's an older hotel( no lift) a bit quirky, . At first glance one might think ' oh,it needs a complete renovation but in its current state that is in itself an attraction. A very warm welcome awaits, beds comfy, fluffy white towels, tea/ coffee facilities , heating and hot water works. Decent food( choice of breakfast and evening meals). Well positioned for Beach, Walks, Buses around the Island, Shanklin old village and Chine. I would stay again.

    Weakend away

Where shall I start, a very dated hotel, stayed in a twin room ground floor, lovely and spacious, that's it. Door to bathroom didn't have the latch in the door fittings, had to use a bolt on the inside. No toiletries as such but a small bar of soap! The towels lovely and white and soft but very very small. My bed was so uncomfortable, I looked under the mattress to see if I could flip it but to find it had at least 8 slats missing no wander it was so uncomfortable. The curtains didn't close at the top had to ask for a peg to hold them together to keep the light out. The door to the room you had to for ably close it properly. Or slam it which is very loud to the other guests. It let light in all round the frame at night it was like having a light on all night. The shower cubical didn't have handle on the inside to close it properly. The Tv was out dated with the channels couldn't update it as was wrong remote for the TV. Breakfast was the only meal which was pallet able. The evening meals were dreadful!!! The soup was thick and gloopy which was like cold custard. On a more positive note, the staff are very pleasant and work very hard. All in all I would definitely not go again. A lot of money is needed to get this hotel up to standard. Shame as was in a fantastic location close to town train St tion and the beach.
