Someone Attempted breaking my room -damp smelling room run down

Hotel photos at online booking sites look great which are outdated by around 10 years in my opinion.- In reality its a scruffy run down pub / hotel . Strong smell of damp , not double glazed traffic noise was very loud on a very busy road. The room Was small had stains every ware again the smell of damp was just awful it had tea/coffee making facilities which I was given out of date milk every day which made the tea curl I ended up buying my own milk We booked for bed and breakfast to be told when we got there breakfast is not available as we have no chef ! No refund was offered ! On the third night someone tried to break in to my room who ever it was they were shaking the door off its hinges until I shouted stop . Think the trouble is the main door to the pub was the same entrance to the hotel rooms so any Tom dick and Harry could walk in and randomly try hotel rooms doors without been seen by the bar staff as you have to walk in to another internal door to go to the pub . The pub was very popular and busy with loud pub goers drinking and smoking outside there was a group of men drinking with a boom box playing in the beer garden when I say garden I mean -worn out grass with tables in the middle of a rubbish tip . Next morning you get up glasses are left out on tables sugar bowls are used for ashtrays which were full spilling out in the tables if I hadnt already paid on line I wouldnt of stayed Id of found somewhere else or gone home . There is also a car wash where foreign workers wash random cars from the road in the pub car park so there was a lot of traffic in out of the car park a horrendous place I dont think it will be open for long

NEED 2ND MORTGAGE TO BUY DRINKS

We were really looking forward to having a pint afer such a long time drinking canned stuff. None of the pumps were working so we opted for 2 pints of bitter on a CO2 pump. Not only was the beer pretty sub standard but we were charged £5 yes £5 a pint and drank it outside beside a rather battered fridge freezer. The whole pub appears to be very run down but I thought the woman who served us was very friendly and one bonus - you can get your car washed in the car park!

    Nice m!eal

Called in for a drink one night then went back for a meal the next. 6 of us plus a baby who was provided with a highchair and we were able to eat inside. Social distancing was excellent. Outside the entrance is a sink and hot hand dryer for use before entering which is a great idea. Staff very friendly and efficient. Food was very good and reasonable however the drinks are slightly on the high side. Building is a little tired but understand this will soon be changed.

    Poor attitude and poor service

We had a red letter day voucher and decided to use it at the May Garland Inn. The voucher was for a three course meal and a glass of wine. The owners were well aware that we had and wanted to use this voucher. They requested that I call back and provide the voucher details prior to arrival. I did this and at the same time confirmed with a staff member that the menu online that offered mains only was not the only menu and that they offered starters and dessert. So as advertised on the rooms part of the website they offer Bed & Breakfast, we decide to stay the night. We booked over the phone. On arrival, we were met by a very run down and scruffy pub, dead flowers, tired paintwork, leaves that mustve been on the foyer from last autumn, clearly not swept for weeks. We were shown to our musty smelling room with very tired bedding and furniture and shown how to exit the property if the pub was closed. This was through a large wooden gate, which had a large piece of wood placed next to it to keep the fence propped up, you then crossed a bit of wasteland which housed old crates, broken furniture etc. We went to the bar for a drink in the afternoon, I asked to see that evenings menu and the barman gave me a list of mains, I asked for the starters menu and was told we dont have one but you could have nachos or popcorn cauliflower. Neither of those were starters, they are a bar snack and side order. We said we dont want to use a voucher for a three course meal that isnt a three course meal. The barman advised that the chef had left during lockdown, so the menu was vastly reduced...... if the chefs left, then who is cooking? The sons owner (manager) then came to see us, whats the problem were his first words in a very unfriendly manner. We explained that we didnt want to use the voucher and why. He advised that we were in a country pub (I think we were already aware of that!), that the menu had been cut from four pages to this one page (fine but dont take vouchers for three course meals then). That it was on the website (agreed, which is why I checked with the staff member before giving the voucher details) and she confirmed that a starters menu was available and that he then advised could go and get some frozen calamari to throw in the deep fat fryer if we wanted. When charging £8.50 for popcorn cauliflower I think Id expect a little better than Weatherspoons type food of frozen calamari. He advised that all the ingredients were local produce and to the highest standard. It was agreed that he wouldnt go and get us some frozen calamari and he wouldnt redeem the voucher. In the evening we order sirloin steak (£3.10 per ounce so not cheap), we asked what it came with and the girl serving us advised chips. tomatoes and mushrooms. It arrived, the frozen chips were obviously locally sourced at the local freezer centre (presumably next to the frozen calamari!), the 8oz steaks were average, not cooked well, we ordered rare and medium and it was difficult to differentiate. The mushrooms never arrived and when we asked the waitress about them she responded with we used to do them. So a very mediocre steak, frozen chips (presumably no local grown potatoes available?) tomato and salad for £25 per head. We were adding food, drinks etc to a tab to be paid on our departure. Before we left, we asked about the breakfast arrangements, the barmaid went to talk to the manager again and came back and advised, were not doing breakfast currently! So the bed & breakfast accommodation is actually just bed? Great, so where should we eat? We were advised that a cafe was a short walk away and opened at 9. The next morning we were ready for breakfast well ahead of 9, we tried to exit the property and found the fence prop had been moved in front of the gate, making exit difficult. My husband shoved the gate open with some force and we went to find breakfast. On return we wished to settle our bill and check out, this was 10.45 approximately. Pub not open, no one to find, so I telephoned the pub, the manager then opened the doors (looked like wed woken him up). No apology, nor did you enjoy your stay, no thank you for staying with us. All he said was the girl shouldve told you, told us what?? During the conversation, the manger advised that he didnt think theyd be busy that night as it was forecast rain. It certainly wasnt busy that night but Im not convinced that its rain that keeps people away! I was concerned about them cancelling the voucher but I neednt of worried because the girl that took the vouchers details and informed us about the starters never passed the details on anyway. This could be a great place, it has potential but it needs host that are welcoming, a more varied menu, thats not overpriced.

    Poor all round

I booked a room for 3 people , which was a double bed with a sofa bed (as advertised ) and received confirmation stating exactly that . Our checking in time was 4;30 pm . The owners son arrived to check us in at 5:30 pm . He then proceeded to moan that he wasnt aware of the sleeping arrangements and hed only readied a room with a double bed , but he would quickly make up a room with 2 single beds ! When it was explained to him (with proof of what was booked ) he was less than accommodating, rudely suggesting if it wasnt good enough , we find somewhere else to stay . By this time wed been made to wait over an hour past our checking in time , met with rudeness , not getting what was booked & having found the place was grubby , run down and unwelcoming, I booked elsewhere . Theres a reason this place is the cheapest on all the booking sites !! Awful place , awful staff/owners
