    Perfectly nice, a bit dated

Four of us (me, husband, adult son, son's friend) stayed at the Matsuyama Tokyu REI Hotel for three nights in early May 2019. It was Golden Week, so the hotel was completely full -- although I made the reservation in January, only standard double rooms were available by then, and these were expensive relative to off-season prices. The rooms were a bit bigger than similar rooms we'd had in Kochi (Richmond Hotel) but sharing a double bed here was more of a pain because there was no place for the person who got stuck up against the wall to put book, glasses, reading light, etc. Further, the room (like the rest of the hotel) was pretty dated. However, the bathrooms were no tinier than usual, and we had a pretty view of Shiroyama Park (though sadly not the castle) from our window. The location is good--right across from the Okaido shopping arcade and streetcars, and a few blocks from either entrance to the castle. (Take the chair lift up to the castle--it's very fun!) We did have a rental car, which we parked in the lot attached to the hotel for 1000 yen/night. I was worried about parking as apparently there aren't many spaces and they can't accommodate large cars, but they had no trouble finding a space for our Nissan Wingroad, which is a large car by Japanese standards. And once we'd parked the thing I started seeing parking lots all over town: turns out Matsuyama has lots of parking lots! I don't think it would have been a problem parking even if the hotel lot had been full. All in all a perfectly nice hotel, but not memorable. If we visit Matsuyama again (this is doubtful--in 3 days I think we saw most of what there is to see) we would probably try somewhere else.

A good and centrally located hotel

The hotel entrance is 20 meters from the Okkaido Airport Limousine bus stop. The hotel is very centrally located and close to everything, and staff understand and speak English well. Plenty of tiny eateries in the side street to the left and in the large gallery across the street. Like other places in Japan, this hotel still has floors for smokers, and the standard rooms are quite tiny... Upon my arrival, they could not offer me a non smoking room, and I was initially advised that the only way to have a non smoking room was to request a paying upgrade and that a late checkout would also incur a cost.... I was disappointed at the prospect of additional costs, but ended up with a very spacious room 1120, facing a hill with a forest and where I could leave the windows open... AND with a shower head high enough that I did not have to bend over to shower I was there for work, so I did not see much of Matsuyama. But the very pleasant surprise came upon check out, as staff advised that I would not be required to pay the additional costs, and I found that that was a great move.

Check in awful, but location was great.

It is a nice hotel, with nice staff who had some English and a great breakfast with lots of options. Helpful with baggage storage. They don't have anywhere that you can put your car while you check in. So nowhere to unload luggage. We didn't want to get tangled in to their parking lot because we were returning our rental car. They were also having a fire alarm check while we checked in. - but didn't communicate that it was a practice. Our room was very cramped but we did choose economy twin - don't!

    Ok, but not the greatest

I wouldn't recommend staying here if you know little to no Japanese. Also the restaurant mainly has sushi and not much else that I can remember. It is a good 30 minute taxi ride away from the Matsuyama station. There is an outlet nearby. This is a 10 year review so things are likely to have changed drastically.
