Basic hotelBasic hotel. A little outdated. Staff seemed friendly enough limited English, but no worries. Room was ok, nothing fancy. Hallway always tended to smell, a strange unpleasant smell. Location was fine.

Breakfast was good but otherwise hotel was noisy and dirty. We booked weeks in advance of our stay but were given very noisy rooms on the top floor. One was underneath the main cooling machinery, so it had a constant high pitched hum, and the other, although a no smoking room, smelled heavily of smoke and was next to the lift, so was subject to that noise all night. When we asked to be moved, we were told that there were no free rooms due to a large booking by a sports team. When looking for mains sockets to charge some mobile gear, I moved a small sofa and there was a lot of dust behind it, which indicates that the cleaners don't often bother cleaning thoroughly. The bathroom is too small for anyone over 4'6" tall - understandable perhaps for Japanese clients, but not for tourists who may, like me, be six feet and above in height. One big redeeming factor was the 'viking style' breakfast with the home style Japanese cooking.

Solid base for Nagano areaI had my doubts about Matsumoto Tourist Hotel with its old building and mixed reviews. However, it ended up being a comfortable four night stay. We had a top floor room with a good view of the city. Although a bit tight for two persons, the mattress was comfortable and it was nice having a fridge and good WiFi. The AC only had three settings (low, medium, and high) but the high setting kept the temperature at a comfortable level. The front always had two or three staff ready to help. As there are only two elevators for couple hundred rooms, there was sometimes a wait to use it but other than that there wasnt anything that was inconvenient. Water dispensers on every other floor and free nightly popsicles were nice. The baths on the bottom floors were also well kept and a nice way to end each day of sightseeing in the hot weather.
