very pleasant ryokan/onsen - fairly pricedwe do about 10 ryokan/onsen visits a year for several years and we really enjoyed this place. the onsen baths are very nice, different in door. the food was very good and the staff allowed us to check in early which was greatly appreciated considering we had been on the road for several hours. the wifi in the lobby actually works.

Matukaneaya Annex Christmas StayThis is our second time staying at the onsen once last spring in March and just recently Christmas 2015. This place has great views of the mountains and ski area and is within walking distance to everything at Mt. Zao. If you have small children the staff is great with time and they are very welcomed here. We happen to know the owners very well as old class mates, but are treated as all guests are. The food here is to die for twice a day breakfast and dinner. You can pick the times you want to eat and the onsen is open 24/7. Just a great place to stay and unwind either skiing all day or hiking the mountains like we do then a HOT bath GREAT mean before bed time

A wonderful stay. Very delicious dinner and breakfast! Very good access to ski slopes:-)Matsukaneya is a Japanese inn at hot spring(Onsen) resort. 3kinds of Onsen large bathtubs. The welcome, advice and guidance were great. It's in a nice part of location with only 5 minute walk to ZAO SANROKU STATION of Mt. Rainier Gondola & Yokokura cource of Ski slopes. Even transportation service is available from MATSUKANEYA. The Ryokan(Japanese style hotel) room is very cleaned. Bathroom toiletries are replaced like tooth brushes, Hair brush, shower cap, towels, and YUKATA(Japanese style bathrobes), as well as the cold water and tea containers. (For female!! Hair dryer is not replaced. Only replaced in the space outside the Onsen bathroom.) Japanese style dinner and breakfast are very delicious and looks beautiful. I had the best time and will definitely be staying here again on my next trip to ZAO ONSEN.Buy a discount ticket of ski lift here:-) ¥5000 will be ¥4600 for one day . ¥9200 will be ¥8400 for two day.

onsen ryokan near the liftsThey have a man-made "onsen" in addition to the natural sulfur onsen that Zao is known for. The sulfur is quite strong (and also quite hot) so be careful not to stay in too long. Full course dinner and breakfast are both good. We had a western/Japanese room with beds, which are very short but I still slept ok. We went in the fall and taking the ropeway up to the top (or halfway and hiking the rest as we did) is well worth it. From the top it's only a short hike to a viewpoint of Okama (a crater lake), which is a big attraction (usually reached directly by car) and absolutely a must-see.
