Appearances can be deceptive! Our hearts sank when we drove in to the Reception driveway. We were confronted with what looked like single rooms with steps outside each and aimed fairly and squarely at the FIFOs working the nearby mines. But to our surprise, and relief, our room was at the rear part of the Motel, away from these, and were by far the newer and more spacious, with a wide verandah looking out over the gravel car park and an overgrown neighboring backyard on one side and the town's sparkling swimming pool on the other. The room was adequate, but only just, and space was really at a premium. We had a double and a single bed and negotiating around them was tricky. However, we did it, and enjoyed good sleep for each night we were there. The spare blankets certainly came in handy those nights! The motel is on the Barcaldine side of town, but a block away from the three very lively hotels in Winton. Other, newer, motels are on the Cloncurry side.

Our visit to WintonThe Matilda Motel was a bit disappointing. It was old & badly in need of renovation. I think it was the most expensive motel on this trip & why... I wondered? There were no amenities...just towels & soap. The water took a long time to come through but it was hot! The positive was that it was very close to town so easy to walk everywhere AND the bed was comfortable.

Oh Dear Never againBecause of Covid, some family and myself traveled out west for two weeks. Very enjoyable except for Winton. My sister an I thought we'd spend some money at the hairdresser only to be told she would only do locals. We were disappointed and went to do some washing at the motel who advertised customer washing facilities. When we got there the owner said, "You'll have to wait until I'm finished and that will be about lunch time". Rude. We feel that the residents of Winton live off the fact that people want to see Dinosaurs, however, we as a family wouldn't recommend going there. Extremely disappointed.

Bypass Winton if you canWhen booking I did not expect too much as is advertised as a 3 star more like a 2 star. I did not think actual double beds existed anymore! Tiny double bed, the room was big enough and had a big rattler(Aircon) in the window. This did cool the room down after the 40 degrees outside after some time. Rooms not good if you have mobility issues as there are 3 steps to get into the room and you need to step into the shower recess as well. There was a sign to alert you of the sulphur smell! Staining in the shower etc. Easy walk to main street. There was other accommodation at the facility but they were not in use due to issues? The beds need to be upgraded to make it passable and the aircon put on for guests prior to arrival for the room to cool down as it does take some time.

Helpful team membersIt was nice stay in Matilda hotel. The team members were very nice. I left my charger by mistake in the room and surprisingly they sent by post to me. It was very generous of them. I would recommend. Absolute worth stay.
