Cheapest hotel of my trip, and the best! This is the third time I have stayed at the Marugame Plaza; once in 1999, then in 2007 and now 2011. I have always been quite happy with the hotel, but this time I found it seems to have had a bit of a renovation done and I had a fantastic room. Although I had just booked a single, I got a twin room on the 10th floor which had a great view over the city to the castle. The bathroom was great- it had a separate room each for the handbasin, toilet and bath. I even got a wardrobe, which is not common in small and cheap Japanese hotels. The staff are very friendly and helpful - they insisted I took one of their umbrellas when I went out in the rain. This was the cheapest hotel of my two week trip, but definitely the best! I'll be coming back (hopefully to room 1003!!!)

Huge room with good castle viewThis was the only hotel we booked through Jalan for our most recent 6 week trip. We had attempted to book the hotel through their Japanese language website but we ran into trouble. An email to hotel took care of the potential for double booking and we were reassured that our reservation was in good order. We stayed for three nights. The entrance to the hotel is up one flight of stairs. Its about a 10 minute walk from the JR station. When we arrived with our rolling suitcases in tow, we used the lower level elevator in the car park to gain access to the lobby. This entrance is not always available, but is necessary when hauling luggage. We had a 30 square meter non-smoking room on the tenth floor. On the hotels website the room was described as a twin relax room with castle view. The room was huge: if it had higher ceilings we could play tennis in there. The furniture was over-sized and not well organized but we moved it around, tucked the massage chair in an alcove and put the chairs by the window so we could enjoy the castle view. The massage chair was a giant hideous object that took up loads of space - my husband tried the massage and actually found it quite painful. We thought about asking them to remove the chair but figured theyd have no place to store it and we werent sure we could make our request understood. The carpet had seen better days and the sofa upholstery was a bit worn - the room looked as if it could use a renovation, but it was otherwise comfortable. Wired internet was fast and reliable. There was a full sized closet in the room. All the usual suspects for amenities were provided and placed on the floor of the closet in a basket - at first we couldnt find the yukatas, the towels, the extra toilet paper etc but then spotted the basket containing everything necessary for our stay. There was excellent loose tea in a caddy along with a pot for boiling water and a working refrigerator for our purchases from the supermarket. The staff had only a little English, but we were able to communicate our needs and get results (how do we operate the the air filter? how do we get more heat? we need more towels) The staff was very eager to please and was very accommodating. Breakfast was included in our plan and was quite good; each day the multi-course Japanese breakfast was different. I noticed some people eating curry rice, but we were given a full Japanese breakfast each morning. Coffee was available in the lobby and was welcome after a long day of site-seeing. There were several small restaurants a short walk away from the hotel which were very convenient for dinner.
