Perfect resort with spacious sea-view cottages, private bay and huge swimming pool! Highly recommended!Mantasaly resort is a luxury 4-star resort with a private bay. We stayed in Mantasaly on behalf of Traveltomtom. Its a 45-minute drive from Diégo-Suarez Airport and they offer 3 types of accommodation, all very spacious and comfortable, some with sea view. This resort offers everything you need for a relaxing holiday in Madagascar: a nice large swimming pool, bar, wellness, outdoor gym, a playground, private beach and a (two-)daily changing menu and decent service. In my opinion the food could be better. Nothing special, just average meals. Something they could improve to meet the (high) standard of their cottages. On top of that, they have their own kite centre. Mantasaly resort is probably the best kite spot in this area where lots of people stay for 1 or 2 weeks to just enjoy the beach and practice all kinds of water sport activities like kite surfing and kayaking but also snorkelling and spearfishing. The less sportive people will like this place too! Its a very relaxing property at the beach with a great viewpoint and laid-back vibe from where you can plan several day trips. I loved my relaxing-time in Mantasaly and their huge swimming pool! This resort meets all Western standards and the WiFi works pretty good.

Untrustworthy and OverpricedMantasaly seems to be the only 4 star hotel around Diego Suarez but for a 4 star hotel we found this place highly disappointing. The rooms were nice and tidy but really warm with a single fan in the ceiling. We were to go on a two different trips, booked and planned by the hotel 2 days in advance. A couple of hours before our departure on the boat we got told it wasnt possible due to other clients wanted to go on their own. Unfortunately everything else was booked on that day and for the next day, which led us to go into Ramena and sort everything out ourselves, because we could not trust the hotel in terms of planning, which of course only was a third of the hotels price. The restaurant is really expensive and disappointing. We ordered their pasta truffle, chicken coconut and a pizza. The truffle dish was replaced with curry, the coconut chicken was cold, even the rice and the pizza didnt arrive. 1,5 hour later we had our food, same dish but just heated in the microwave. 36000,- for a simple pasta truffle dish is pricy. The hotel is located remote and they do not hesitate to raise the prices. Apparently there was a shut down in their electricity which had us without power and any kind of ventilation for 5 hours. It was only a couple of the bungalows there was without power so we asked if they could move us to a new room. They said they were fully booked, but there was plenty of availability and you could even see it on hotels.com - very unprofessional and even lied to us. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. We spend 4 nights here and it was one the most disappointing experiences we had, especially when they claim themselves as a 4 star hotel. And after travelling in Madagascar for 3 weeks we have seen a fair bit of accommodation and service levels. We even paid 10 euro for extra WiFi which did not work, they didnt believe it and wouldnt sort out the problem.

DisappointingWe did not stay here for kitesurfing as it was not the season. Arrival - not enough signs along the track as our driver could not find it despite picking up a local to help guide us in. Due to late arrival the kitchen had already closed but did kindly make us burgers which were good. Rooms - No air con, just a ceiling fan. Comfortable enough and was cleaned every day. Long walk from the restaurant kept it quiet which was nice but the lighting along the path was poor and the path was rocky and uneven - use a torch. Breakfast buffet - good range of foods but variable quality. Some days there was plenty, at different times the buffet had not been replenished and looked messy. Restaurant - good range and mostly good quality but twice the price of everywhere else in Madagascar. Disappointing evening where the food came cold, late, in stages for the table and even the wrong dish. No apology was made at the time or afterwards. Pool was nice. Beach - very shallow and lots of weed and corals underfoot. Not great to swim in. We did go paddle boarding which was fun although we had to pump the boards up ourselves as the guy doing it left them less than half full of air. Gym - sufficient equipment for a good workout. Sauna - this was lit for us but never got hot, just filled with smoke. Customer service - disappointing. We agreed to do a tour the day before but on the actual day of the trip were told a couple of hours before departure time that the other guests wished to go alone so we could not go! We organised our own tours for 1/3 of the price. Paying for the hotel - you had to pay cash or via bank transfer however our European banks did not recognise the bank codes - we were told this was a common problem. There were lots of staff around but only really the Assistant Manager and main Receptionist who actually helped/did things. Overall a surprisingly low standard for what appears to be a 4 star hotel. You are held to ransom for food and drinks (prices) as there are no nearby alternatives within walking distance. If you are there for kitesurfing and happy to pay well over the odds for food and accommodation this should be fine, otherwise I would not recommend staying here.
