Beautiful 16th century manor house which fails to live up to expectations or its own aspirations

The hotel is an attractive old 16th Century manor house, where Henri IV apparently used to stay when hunting in the area. We arrived well beyond the appointed opening time, but no-one was around and though we could see people inside, no-one answered as we repeatedly rang the doorbell. Eventually, a workman arrived and let us in. The room was fairly abysmal: probably not refurbished since the 70s, and very basic. There are some lovely antiques around, but the inside is even more run down than the outside. It certainly looks as though it has seen better days, and has a frayed, seedy edge to it amidst a general aura of decaying grandeur. It is situated on a fairly busy road, which was quite noisy. There was a strong smell of sewage in the grounds as we waited to gain access. The restaurant turned out to be a mixed experience, with rather more style than substance. The amuses bouches looked intriguing and started well, but turned out to be tasteless and rather disappointing stodgy little crab balls with a strawberry soup?? My starter of carpaccio of Scallops on a bed of raw vegetables didnt taste as fresh as I would have liked. The main course, lamb fillet just au point with roast vegetables was delicious. The profiteroles were over heavy and very overpowering at the end of the meal. There were further confectionery offers with the coffee. The wine was good and the service was reasonable. As so often happens in these old hotels, the plumbing system was loud and intrusive, and as people will insist on flushing loos multiple times per night, very disruptive. We appeared to be the only guests having breakfast, which was pretty awful. Very limited choice, no natural yoghurt, and poor coffee, though it cost 10. The bill for this hotel, including dinner, bed and breakfast for two, was over 200, which seemed expensive for a hotel which has clearly seen better days.

    Wonderful dinner with friends

Well worth a visit! The food was exquisite, a good choice of wine and all reasonably priced (we paid 40 euros a head in total). The ambiance of old fashioned beautiful setting was cleverly contrasted with food presented in modern and artistically pleasing way. A range of menus to choose from - we took a 3 course Gourmand, which is more like 4 course as you get an amuse bouche with it. Highly recommended!

    Great 25th celebration

Came here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary as a group of 8. Friendly service and good food and wine at a reasonable price. Good atmosphere. Would definitely recommend for large or small groups and for special occasions or just a pleasant meal.
