Wifi is my love & amazing foot massage machineIt is impossible to have such a good wifi!!! I love it. In the city was horrible trip coz my mom is plus size women who scared of bikes so we WALKED all day (there is no proper taxi except bike taxi). Nothing to do in this city, but if you ended up here, nature bless you, stay in this hotel. Everything is clean except windows. Nice coffee/tea table with proper leaves tea! Plasma TV! Yes, toilet and shower is not very nice but fair, I didn't even care! We have stayed in standard room!!! And I am so amazed, you can see my angry comments about other hotels in Asia, believe me, I am very realistic. A/C in the room as well, but we stayed in Jan, was cold in the room, almost in all hotels in Bagan that I have stayed in is like this, so whatever. Design is like posh, it is not, but it is seems like it, so I don't mind. I liked almost everything and it is rare, bravo. Staff is cute and nice as well. Nice service! Thank you.

Small, boutique hotel. We checked in at 5 am instead of 2 pm - 9 hours ahead and we still paid just for 1 night. When we were at the hotel, we were the only guests and we got suite apartment instead of a regular room. The hotel staff was friendly, we hired 2 bicycles from the hotel for free and staff arranged transfer to airport and a good guide for us. Good location - local restaurants and bars nearby, Amanpura by 20 min bicycle riding.

Local lodge on outskirts of MandalayThis is a boutique lodge in the sense that I believe there are only 6 rooms. A very local lodge, with almost no english spoken by any of the rather numerous staff (I think I've seen 8-10 people, for 6 rooms). The rooms are quite large, with some luxury features that you would not expect, such as a massage chair, or 3D blu-ray DVDs. Overall the rooms are fine although the bathroom could be a little nicer, but all are acceptable. Breakfast is quite lacking in that there is basically toast, eggs, and fruit. This will remain the same every day. Location is somewhat closer to U-Bein bridge than city center Mandalay, and is quite close to Mahamuni temple and the highway bus station. A motorbike taxi should be around 2-3k to town.

Excellent coffeeWhile in Mandalay, we stayed at the Mandalay Kandawgyi Inn, a cute little hotel on a quiet side street, across from the lake ("Kandawgyi" means "great royal lake"). Immediately I liked the look of the hotel, and I really wanted to love the hotel, as it was inexpensive (about $40 CAD a night), in a good location, had friendly staff, good WiFi, and excellent coffee*. However, if you like peace and quiet at night, this is not the hotel for you. On our first night, at around 8pm, music started blaring, and continued all night long. From what I could ascertain, it wasn't coming from within the hotel, or even nearby; it sounded like it was coming from quite a distance -- perhaps from across the lake. All night long I could clearly hear music and amplified voices. I could be wrong, by my opinion is that Mandalay is a noisy city, and no matter where you are, you can't avoid noise. Irritating as hell, but not the hotel's fault (which is why I am rating it a generous 3 stars -- if it were any other hotel, I would rate it one or two stars for the noise). Despite the noise, which I really feel is not the hotel's fault, I liked the hotel (although I have no desire to ever go back to Mandalay -- I did not care for the city at all, the noise being a major factor), but there were some minor annoyances/quirks: 1. The outlets in the room were in inappropriate places, such as several feet above the floor, so it was difficult to charge a phone, because the cord was too short to stretch from the outlet to the table/surface below. Terrible design. 2. The lighting in the room was inadequate, and the lightbulb above the bed was burnt out, so there was not enough light to read. 3. While there was plenty of hot water (no complaints there), the bathroom was horribly designed. The bathroom was one of those typical Burmese/Asian bathrooms where the shower is not in a separate stall, and sprays water everywhere. But the towel rack was placed right beside the shower, so anything hanging would get soaking wet. I don't understand why the towel rack couldn't have been placed at the opposite end of the bathroom. One of the worst designed bathrooms during our stay in Burma. 4. There was a rooftop pool, but you had to walk up these narrow, sketchy stairs. I definitely did not feel safe going up and down the stairs. And speaking about stairs, the hotel is not accessible -- there is no elevator. Not a problem for me, but something to note. All in all, this could have been a 4 star hotel if it weren't for the noise (which is out of their control -- Mandalay is just a noisy city that's not worth visiting, in my opinion) and the weird quirks. But if you want a good cup of coffee (which is hard to find in Burma), this is the place to go. *I'm not a coffee connoisseur, but damn, the coffee served at breakfast was excellent. I asked the hotel manager where the coffee was from, and he said that the hotel owner also owned a farm in Pyin Oo Lwin, and that's where the coffee is from. Unfortunately they didn't sell the coffee at the hotel (I asked), but I suggested they do so in the future. Too bad we had gone to Pyin Oo Lwin before Mandalay, otherwise I would have tried to find the coffee! Overall it was a decent hotel with a few manageable quirks, although the noise from the city was really bothersome. While I recommend the hotel, I don't recommend Mandalay!
