    a holiday to remember.. (Nightmare)

We booked 6 nights, stayed for 1 at Horizon Hotel (NOT recommended as the room condition was inhumane) due to overbooking and 5 nights at Malia Bay. We were advised that Horizon hotel is also 4 stars.. unfortunately that is far away from reality. Malia Bay managed the overbooking in a really poor manner and were completely unprofessional, for example: Taxi driver had no clue who is paying him, Horizon hotel had no idea that we were coming to them for one night due to the overbooking. so yea.. we ended up in a room that i would personally describe as a coffin. Food was the same everyday and i cannot comprehend the fact that we were in GREECE, specifically Malia and had ONLY one day of "Sea Food" option at the buffet. (Sea Food for them = Fish and Shrimps) the rest does not exist apparently. Guest relations: Margarita has no clue about Customer Service and no handling skills. She is also lacking the ethics and etiquette of handling a professional conversation (Interrupting, not actively listening, not showing empathy, etc..) How embarassing it is for a 4 Stars hotel to charge 1 Euro for a bottle of water EVEN THOUGH you booked all inclusive. A game of billiards cost 2 Euros per game and not just that, it MUST be 1+1 Euros not 2 Euros coin. Malia center is 20-25 mins walking distance from the hotel so get ready for the creepiest walk you'll ever take (Dark streets with no population till you reach the light of heaven <-- City center) Overall it was a really poor experience. I would never step one foot in such place again. Just dont go to Malia as there are MUCH BETTER islands to visit and fulfill all your wishes for a dream holiday and you would even pay less for 2 people.

Clean rooms, good food, poor service, hidden costs

We decided to book a holiday to Malia in January and chose Malia Bay Hotel as it was the right price, one of the only hotels on the beach and relatively close to the town (main strip). There were a group of 10 of us who went on a 'lads' holiday and we stayed for 5 nights. When we first arrived, we were met with LOTS of extra (hidden) charges which were completely unexpected. First there was 3 euros per night tax. I know this isn't the hotel's fault, but it would have been nice of them to send a friendly reminder (via email?) seeing as the tax was only introduced last year! Next was the charge for the Safe (which was 13 euros) and there was also a charge for WiFi - which was 10 euros for 7 days. These charges aren't mentioned anywhere on the hotel's website! We didn't end up using the WiFi as we all had mobile data - which is free to use in Europe (for the moment!). I wouldn't recommend paying for the WiFi, because others we talked to said it was extremely slow and almost unusable! However, aside from this, the hotel did provide us with food and drink at 3am in the morning (when we arrived). We were relatively impressed with the rooms - they were quite clean. Although they were quite small, this was expected for the price we paid. However, one thing we weren't expecting were the number of mosquitoes in the room! The cleaners leave windows and doors open allowing mosquitoes to come in. Be prepared for this! The pools are quite nice (one large, deep pool) and another small pool for kids. The food was also quite nice. There is something for everyone. However, as expected with a budget all inclusive, the food was the same every day. Aside from this, we all found the food very tasty and fresh. The beach is also very nice, with fine sand - unlike many other European destinations. We didn't really interact much with the Animation team, but with the small interactions we had, they were quite friendly. There's always a lot going on whether it's beach volleyball, water polo + many other games. On our last day however, we were really disappointed with the hotel's service. Checkout time is at 12pm (like most other all inclusive hotels). However, it was made apparent to us that you are not allowed to use all inclusive facilities (such as food/drink) after 12pm! Our flight on the last day was at 23:30 so we were left starving and thirsty by the hotel from 12pm until 20:30 (which was our pick up time). In the end, we had to go down to a local café for lunch. All other all inclusive hotels I have been to have allowed guests to continue using all inclusive facilities - even after they have vacated their room. So this was a real shock! In addition to the above, no public areas of the hotel have air conditioning - only the rooms do. So on the last day, we baked in the heat and we were not given anything to eat or drink without paying 25 euros each. The luggage storage area where we were told to keep our bags is never locked and kept open. So we didn't feel especially safe leaving our bags there, but nothing happened to them. Overall, the holiday was good fun. But I think this was largely due to the 10 of us having each other's company - not the hotel.

    They want your MONEY!

When we arrived, we were automatically charged a hidden tax which was not mentioned anywhere. They also charge 14 for a safe which is ridiculous and it is not a deposit. There is also a charge for wifi which is stupidly expensive. Also it is not truly all inclusive. All the inclusive stuff finishes at 11pm. They are too strict and not flexible. I asked for a cola at 11:10pm and the bartender was too strict and said that i had to pay. For a hot country you get really thirsty from drinks and the hotel managed to squeeze money out of us from us getting drinks. Although they had drinking water 24/7 it was heavily chlorinated so we were forced to buy water from the shop opposite. When we asked to fill our water bottles they said we were not allowed. Secondly, we checked out at 12pm and we wanted to eat and we booked all inclusive for the whole day and they said we had to pay 25 each for the rest of the day for all inclusive. However the food in the hotel was really nice and it was very tasty. The only problem was the drinks. All the sodas were just cheap watered down cola etc. Our room was alright. Our door was really stiff and the lock on the bathroom was really hard to open. The staff are not willing to be generous we had 3 hours left at the hotel and I asked to use the wifi because we were going to catch a flight soon and they still wanted me to pay 3. The hospitality is awful at the hotel. The location was terrible and everywhere around the hotel was empty apart from a few souvenir shops. One of my friends rooms did not have a window or vent in the bathroom which made everything very steamy in the room. In my room the lock for the bathroom was too stiff and the balcony door was too stiff and it seems like in every room there was something bad about it. Not one room that we booked was perfect. to sum up, Great food, Rubbish Drinks, Terrible Location, 2/5 rating for Rooms, Great room cleaning, No air conditioning in the lobby or around the hotel besides the rooms, Strict Staff, Too many hidden costs.

Shocking hotel but staff are very nice

This hotel is subpar to say the least. The hotel is advertised as a 4 star hotel just for the government to gain more tax revenue per night rather than because the facilities are good enough. At best a 3 star resort. DO NOT BOTHER COMING HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO HAVE A NIGHTMARISH HOLIDAY. In particular, the restaurant manager had the cheek to remove us from lunch and cause a scene whilst at it in front of a full restaurant. However some good sides are that the night staff are amazing and always happy to help (even in the middle of the night). The receptionist during the night was very helpful and cheerful when we came back from clubbing at 6am every night. And one female member of staff working at reception was a nice person to talk to and very informative. My room was shocking however to say the least. No ventilation or window in the bathroom which meant there was a constant scent of damp

    Location Location Location

From looking at the pictures and location this hotel seemed like the perfect get away for a couple on a budget. The first night we got there we had ants in our room, only a few so we thought well, its not five star so we will keep an eye on it maybe its where the room is placed (126). The next day it got worse so we mentioned it to the lady at reception and she was more than helpful she had us moved to a larger room in front of the pool which was perfect! Being on the beach and only a 20 min walk from Malia strip was bliss! a taxi into town was only 7 euros, or you could walk it which takes on average 30 mins into central. On the beach its quite rocky in the sea .. however if you walk right of the beach for 5 mins to Potammos beach theres no rocks in the sea really. Malia Bay beach is great if you want to see some fish though, otherwise walk down for more sun beds and space and no rocks! Dont forget the doughnut man sells amazing doughnuts too 2.50 euros each! Having 2 pools in the hotel was nice as the kids generally stayed in one and adults in the other. Food: Breakfast choice always the same and not great to be honest. The water that was accessible all day to drink tasted funky so I had to buy bottled water all holiday as I don't drink anything but water. I'm used to there being an all inclusive cocktail or two on the menu so was disappointed when I found out there wasn't any, and the ones I paid for tasted pretty disgusting. Although the local wine and lemonade did the trick for the holiday when I wasn't drinking in Malia strip! Lunch and dinner always had good choice, the days they have the BBQ are my favorite!!! I couldn't get enough of it. So nice! Could do with a bit more space to squeeze some tables in as there wasn't quite enough room for everyone at times and sitting on a large table with other parties was a strange experience. The restaurant manager constantly looked like there was a bad smell and even when I said hello he didn't say anything. However all the other staff were lovely there. Rooms: Family room was lovely size, big old shower looks like they had a bit of a refurbishment recently maybe? No noise in the evening either in room 103 . Could not hear noise from our neighbours. Wellness centre: Is a little shack outside, I didn't like the way on one day the lady was walking around trying to drum up business she got a bit funny when I kindly declined - I had bad heat rash that day which you could clearly see and she made a bit of a fuss. I'm on holiday please don't bother me! Animation team: Loved the main guy, he was full of energy. I don't know how he stays so happy all the time watching him run around wore me out! There was one girl every day who looked like she just didnt want to be there but they were all quite entertaining to watch and seemed like they all enjoyed trying to keep everyone busy. The girls loved interacting with the kids which was nice to see and they were all very kind. Not sure how neccessary all the dancing was when announcing the activities but was different to say the least! Offering shots on arrival to dinner one night was a nice touch! Photographs: We had some lovely photos done before dinner one night and the guy who did them was ever so kind! Front of house staff: So so kind and helpful, the slim lady with the tight curly hair was so lovely, really appreciate all her help. Nothing ever seemed to much of a bother for her and she would always say hello when we were passing. If your looking for a stay where location keeps you far enough away from the bustle you get a good nights sleep and some peace and close enough that you are in the heart of it in 5 minutes and you are on a budget, then this place is good enough! For a cheap get away we couldn't complain. 5* service, just not 5* everything else
