absolutely loved our stay at the lighthouse keepers cottage

Yes maybe it could do with some tlc inside, but we absolutely loved it regardless. We were blessed with a gorgeous late winter sunny afternoon, followed by an awesome sunset, then a clear night where we were able to sit under the lighthouse beams and enjoy the crystal clear milky way overhead and then enjoy a nice sunrise and sunny morning next day was absolutely magical. I've stayed in 5 star hotels in Sydney, Europe and Asia, but would say my night at Low Head Lighthouse Keepers cottage was one of the most enjoyable I've ever had. Would I have been less enthusiastic if not so lucky with the weather, perhaps

    Such a disappointment

Such interesting buildings and such a fantastic location - this place has everything going for it. When u have been gifted some of the oldest buildings in Australia you need to show love and respect. The operators of this location show little respect for the buildings or the guests. I note that the only strongly positive reviews for this location relate to the lighthouse keepers accommodation - which may well be stunning - it certainly looks amazing from the outside. We were instead in one of the cottages in the main part of the complex. Despite amazingly thick walls, and the excitement of sleeping in one of the oldest buildings in Australia, the renovation and subsequent care of the building are just not in keeping with the potential or the cost ($170 pn) for the accommodation. In terms of fittings I note that all but one of the fireplaces has been blocked with cheap pieces of painted plywood (see pictures below). The one that was still operational had had a gas fireplace fitted but it was broken. I note that a 1 year old TA review had noted that it was not working at that time ! In my view, the bathroom was really not in keeping with the building or the promised luxury (see below) The two pieces of furniture in the bedroom were a wooden bed with a spring mattress that was squeaky, lumpy and hard (and obviously very old), as well as an open frame clothes hanger for that looked like it has been collected from the side of the road. The lounge room chairs looked and felt like they had come from some ugly 50s store while the floor rug would have been ugly in the 70s. The rest of the furniture was essentially the sort of cheap stuff you would see in a $75/night motel. The minimum change that needs to be made to justify the pricetag and capitalize on the building and locations would be: fill the place with some older/antique furniture that would lend charm to the place, install a bed that is comfortable, blinds that keep out light, a modern bathroom with decent style and a working fireplace/heater in the lounge. I gave 2 stars because of the exterior and environment of the place - it would have been 1 star based on the welcome provided by the interior.

    Historic Seafaring Stay

We visited the Low Head Pilot l Station for the museum, and were blown away with the care and attention to refurbish the old site to such a high standard. After coffee and cake (yum) in the cafe, we looked through the site, wondering at the olden days and how life must-have been when in use.

    Another Authentic Tassie Experience

Nobody does authentic like Tasmania. If you're the type who shuns the theme park holiday then the Pilot Station might just be the place for you. We were blown away by the immaculately presented grounds and historic buildings and were more than pleasantly surprised by our accommodation for the next two nights. Our digs (Boat Crew West) were one half of one of the original buildings and comprised a large kitchen/dining area, very generous full bathroom with a deep bath, shower and toilet. Strangely, in a room this size, there was no vanity to put toiletries, just a basin that filled the pedestal it was on. We also scored a good sized loungeroom with gas fire and TV and a good sized bedroom with a very comfy double bed . The decor was modern without overwhelming the historic feel. We loved the polished timber flooring throughout but you'll need to watch your step going from the dining area to the loungeroom. I kept tripping up the small step, entirely my own fault. We also had lovely views from all rooms. The place was clean, quiet and lovely to come back to at the end of the day. An added bonus was the one minute walk to the very nice cafe/restaurant and museum on site. If you're a fan of lighthouses, you'll be spoilt for choice, they were everywhere, Low Head is a pretty dangerous spot for sea vessels .

The Queenslander - Good View... Dirty House

Stayed at the Queenslander - Gorgeous views but cannot say the same for the state of the house. The house itself is amazing, old & comforting but on arrival, we were met with dead flies & spiders all over the benches, cobwebs hanging down from all the door frames, dirty wooden floors all throughout the house, dirty dining room table, dirty glassware so we used plastic cups instead, beds were dusty in all rooms and my bed was missing a towel (lucky i bought my own along as there were no spares anywhere in the house). Also the property had one small bin in the pantry to last 8 adults a whole weekend (also no rubbish or recycling wheelie bins like last time). 2 toilets and only one roll of toilet paper in each, no spares, Carpet in lounge room covered in stains, We had previously stayed in this property and it was amazing! But after this disappointing stay this time round, we will not be staying again. For the large price paid, you expect to not have to clean accommodation on arrival.
