  A good base for exploring

  We had booked a two night stay at the Hotel Lory on the internet on the basis of its location in Celano, just off the main motorway that connects the west and east coasts of central Italy and near to the many beautiful national parks of the Abruzzo. Pasquale, who has an English wife, greeted us and showed us to our room. The one he had planned for us looked onto the main street, but we felt this could be a bit noisy at night, so we swapped for one at the back of the hotel overlooking the ample car park. The hotel website gives the hotel 4 stars but this is overstating what the hotel offers. The hotel caters primarily at this season at least for business travellers, and is clean and functional. We had a family room with three beds. The rooms are compact, but comfortable enough and the shower room was well stocked with towels (hotels often omit to put in extra towels, somehow assuming children will make do). One thing I didn't like was the lack of carpet in the room and corridors which meant that at night any noise was amplified. But to be fair, we were only aware of noise on the first night of our stay, and this as always is due to the nature of the guests, not the fault of the hotel. Pasquale and the other staff were very helpful throughout our stay. The buffet breakfast is served in a small dining room and is perfectly adequate. For convenience, we ate on both nights of our stay in the Ristorante Ferraro, which is linked to the hotel and situated a few doors down. The restaurant was well frequented by hotel guests, and typically provincial (TV on in the corner!). There was no written menu but our Egyptian waiter was very helpful in his English translations of the four or so choices for each course of the meal. The food was simple but hearty, with pasta and gnocchi dishes heavily featured. Cost was very reasonable and we felt very welcome there. So all in all, a pleasant enough stay in a hotel which lacks atmosphere in its strangely empty public rooms, but makes up for it with its welcoming staff and it does the job. We enjoyed exploring the Abruzzo countryside with its spectacular snow-topped 3000m peaks. Celano itself is a small busy town dominated by its castle, while below it lies the massive agricultural hollow left when they drained Italy's largest lake a few centuries back. We would happily visit again.

  Very nice hotel

  Very nice hotel, clean, very friendly good english speaking staff. Comfortable rooms with good airco. Free parking, nice breakfast (for Italy). Nice friendly village in the neigbourhood of the highway. Beautiful surrounding, with almost no tourist. Ideal for walking or cycling.

  Very Good

  The Hotel is very clean and very quiet. The only noise was from outside so be aware if you want a nice quiet evening in your room. The rooms where very clean and every thing worked okay and the maids cleaned the rooms to a high standard. I would stay here again anytime..

  Perfect for ski or hiking trip

  Friendly, accommodating staff with great English. Rooms are spacious and clean. Plenty hot water. Great breakfast buffet - typical Italian style with sweet cakes but also cereals, cheese, salami, boiled eggs, plenty juice, hot drinks and food choices for coeliacs, reception open 24/7 and easy to get tea/ coffee throughout the day. Dinner nice and very reasonable priced. 3 generation family group - everyone happy. 10 mins drive to Magnola Pianti ski area, ski storage room available at hotel. Plenty car parking facilities. Short walk to bars and shops in Celano and castle. A little more fresh fruit at breakfast would make it perfect.

  Very good hotel

  Hotel Lory is a 4 star hotel in Celano with a great view of the mountain nearby, the rooms are ok, the staff is great and tries to help you as much as possible. It is a good place for bussines trips and for a short vacation. The only problem that you might have is only if you are in big groups +20, and loud or not that polite with the staff. If you want them to respect you, you also must respect them back or else you might have a little tension while you stay there. The internet on the second floor is very bad, actualy the internet in all Celano is very bad but you will manage. Enjoy Celano!
