    Kosdere?- never again!!!!!!!!!!

Dear friends, Let me start by saying that you do not want to come to Turkey in August(as we did this time) It is overwhelmingly hot. We have been there 3 times and I would venture to say September is a better choice. Beside the heat in July and August, it is also very stuffy and humid by the sea. We were in Kosdere Hotel, Incekum, Alanya before, some 10 years ago. At the time it was a modest, 3 star, nice, unassuming hotel and we had quite good memories even if they put us for the first night in a dump, dark, foul smelling ground floor room; the room we were moved into later we considered the best of all. The hotel is definitely not new, perhaps 20 years old though the biggest and tallest block(bar on the top floor with spectacular views) close to the beach is possibly ten years younger. Regardless of the age it seems to be well maintained and ages well. Somewhat unusual feature of it is that it spreads over two sites, on both sides of a rather sleepy dead end road leading to two more large hotels: Sentido and Adenya. See the photos. As you come down the road on the RIGHT you have got A block (containing reception and lobby) beyond which there are two more blocks overlooking lawn and garden that undulate down towards bars, pools and recreational area. Further down there are four more blocks very closely set one to the other, perhaps much too closely. These are the rooms 1000. No immediate access to the sea from that site. The site on the LEFT leads on to a little, crowded beach and comprises 9 more blocks(rooms2000), the already mentioned one in the center being the newest, and one more pool. This site is much more quiet as all the activities take place on the other, right side. Everything is rather tightly spaced in Kosdere with little room left. Not unusual in Turkey, as far as I could see. If you happen to come across any leaflets or maps of the hotel(not an easy feat), they must be coming from the time when it was built and do not represent its current layout. Update them for the benefit of the guests? Who cares. Rooms. Our room number was 1614. It was facing the west and the far end of the big pool. At night it gets very noisy there as the arena is situated just by the pool. It did not bother us much as the heat relented only at about 23.00 to allow us to enjoy the night on the balcony when the evening entertainment will have ceased. Furnishing is rather sparse and simple, low quality bathroom fittings, 5Euro worth hair dryer, old fashion TV set with only(!) Russian, German, Turkish and one Polish channels. Safe-2/day. The room was kept immaculately clean but we did tip regularly. Two major problems: 1. They prohibit doing any washing in a washing basin and to that end provide no plug(but there is towel rack on the balcony to dry your smalls) while hotel laundry charges 1-6Euro a piece. 2. air conditioning is set to 24C. Remote controller allows one to switch it on and off only, no regulation possible. Besides, once or twice at night electricity is momentarily switched off which deactivates the air conditioning; it does not automatically restart unless you do it yourself; otherwise you wake up drenched in sweat in the morning. Pure delight! Of course it is all meant to reduce electricity bill at your expense. Complaining does not help. The same principle applies to restaurants and lobby: either air conditioning is off permanently or it is on for a while before the meals but within half an hour with the doors open it gets as hot within as without. How can you possibly enjoy your meal in such conditions is anyones guess. There are two restaurants, or should I more appropriately say canteens in the so called hotel. One on each site. The fodder is the same. It is edible, not all that bad. They did manage to burn porridge and milk a few times though. As for drinks: water is served cool with lemon, so you will not die of thirst. Soft drinks come with Turkish modifications which our son no doubt would have spotted(not the same Coke!). Local lager is a bit bitter, white wine-bad, red surprisingly drinkable. I would not touch local spirits with a barge pole as I value my stomach. In this so called all inclusive hotel you can of course purchase proper drinks, if you like. In this chay and coffee drinking nation there is even no proper tea or coffee available within the all-inclusive package in this hotel! What they offer instead from vending machines are coffee, tea resembling liquids, garish colors which will put you off even before you taste them. Speaks chemicals. Turkish coffee at 2.5 between 17.00-18.00 in the lobby(remember, no air-conditioning there!). To top up your culinary experience I am enclosing photos of miles long queues of starving Russians forming orderly before evening meals. When the doors open everyone rushes in as if they were never to eat again. Looks like sale at Harrods. Who can blame them/us as it gets so uncomfortable inside so soon. The queues never get much shorter till nearly the very end by which time the canteen resembles bison trampled prairie. It is slightly better in the canteen next to spa(spa paid for of course) in the basement of the central block, left site- the one closer to the beach. The truth is, if fully booked, there are just too many guests for the two little canteens even if they also serve grilled food outside. As for the waiters I am fully sympathetic with their hard work in these difficult conditions but these are not really waiters, not proper ones. It is just staff. Some of the guests would have reserved tables for themselves with the waiters to avoid the inconvenience of the evening rush hour. I do not approve as there would be other guests waiting helplessly with their plates with no-where to sit. Also candy floss and popcorn(presumably paid for) and at tea time some rather tasteless biscuits by the main pool. That more and less covers the subject of food and drink. There are three pools in Kosdere: one on the site close to the beach(left) and two on the reception site(right). I have to admit they are clean in spite of the crowds who frequent them. Especially the large pool gets crowded while the other two, square ones tend not to. All have shallow side pools for kids. The grounds are rather cramped but planted with lush vegetation, some of which gives off lovely fragrance at night, climbers adorn walls, lawns allow for some games. There is even a small zoo with some chicken and whitish rabbits which are allowed out at times, much to kids delight. Some people may be less than delighted with a number of stray cats begging for food and sometimes even strolling into the canteens. It is still an improvement on rats that inhabited the grounds those ten years ago. The beach is rather small and narrow and does get crowded. Besides it gets quite stony at its far ends. Beach parasols, sun beds, mattresses though graciously come free must come from the olden days of Ataturk. They are supposed to be laid out for the guests by a couple of beach attendants and mostly they are but if you want the unoccupied beds at the far ends you have to help yourself to the stuff with no offer of help at all. Dare you not take two parasols from the stack per couple as per hotel policy; the attendant will chase you and demand either 1$ extra or one parasol back. Later however , they fall asleep from all the hard work and will take no notice. Once we witnessed an ugly incident on the beach which undermines further ones naive assumption one is a welcome guest. After a lot of shouting in Turkish the elderly beach attendant nearly hit one of the lady guests who would not give up her sun bed which she and her friends turned around with the back to the sea. He, being in charge of law and order on the beach wanted it the proper way-facing the sea, no discussion! They also start raking and tidying up the beach at four pm(!) when life on the said beach is still in full swing. The water is mostly clean and warm. We could not help wallowing in the shallows for hours on end. However, if the wind changes direction it sometimes pushes debris into the little bay and onto the beach. Some panty liners kept quietly taking roots in the hollows with no action from the attendants. Evidently the position of sun beds gets priority. There are only two showers to wash the salt and sand off. On a happier note, two fig trees grow there and in late summer one can pick ripe figs right from them. If you need a different experience there is also a rustic Alibaba restaurant(private) on the beach where you can enjoy some food and drink in the growing darkness. We never tried, so I cant comment. There are also some kayaks, pedalos, jet ski for hire as well as ringo/banana rides and parasailing. I have nearly forgotten: in line with the all-inclusive concept you need to have/ buy or rent(2 per person per day) your own beach towel! I wonder if the hotel gets a commission on each towel sold from the vendors. On this happy note we move on to the subject of shops. There are a few in the hotel, one floor down from the reception. More still you will find outside, even more -10 min walk towards the main highway Alanya-Manavgat-Side- Antalya. In the overpowering heat we never felt like walking far. As far as I could determine(we rented a car for a few days) prices are 30-50% higher than in supermarkets. The reception and lobby is a separate issue. Again no air conditioning there! The receptionists are mostly friendly and helpful but cannot do much against the hotel policy(like saving on air-conditioning). So it is probably just a waste of time to complain. Plus English is NOT spoken there. Russian and German-yes, to a degree. English-no(except for Mrs Ilkoy). Funny place for four stars, would not you agree? They will still happily exchange your hard earned Euros, Pounds, Dollars at a decent rate: 2TL to 1 ; 2.7 to 1 £. No point going anywhere else. However, do not expect to have your Turkish Liras converted back to hard currency. Try your luck in a shop but the rate is worse. A word about entertainment and activities, which we on principle ignore. How many times can you watch belly dancing? As far as we remember the repertoire of Kids disco is the same as 10 years ago with the addition of a few Russian tunes. Beach sports I have already covered; darts there on some days as well. There is also tennis court(paid separately), table tennis, pool; archery and air rifle on the lawn in some afternoons. I cant comment on the night life as we chose the relative comfort of our poorly air-conditioned room on most nights. There is no other way to put it: this establishment is either for the young and less demanding or for those on a budget. Definitely not 4 star! The clientele was by far predominantly Russians with some insets from other countries: Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Rep., Slovakia and Turkey. Contrary to some other comments I cant say the Russians are all that different or awkward: they just eat loads, some drink much, some have a peculiar hobby of coming with their fishing gear and actually angling and later grilling their catch on their balconies. Could be worse. As I am coming to the inevitable conclusion just a few words about the surrounding area. As you pass Kosdere first you come across Adenya Hotel, which I am told is exclusively for Muslims. True enough, never saw any of the guests. Must be very private. The next hotel is Gold Island-Sentido Hotel, part older, part brand new and it is the newly built futuristic globe that is worth visiting. Besides, at night it enjoys fantastic flickering illumination. Do not miss it! In daytime, as you approach Sentido, on your right you will find narrow steps leading down to a lovely, long stretch of sandy beach which is shared by a sequence of hotels built along it. You can have a walk if you wish as beaches in Turkey are public, hotels only having access to them. Our little discovery is a quiet bar on the coast between Adenya and Sentido Hotels. Besides, there is a modest pensione and a fairly big shop selling clothes and towels and bath robes; I would not be surprised if competitively priced. Just before Sentido on your left you will see a hand painted sign PANSIYON DENIZ EVI, SAHIL CAFÉ&BAR, turn left into a dirt road, pass staff car park on your right, walk on towards the coast. The bar is mostly quiet and very competitively priced eg. Turkish coffee is only the usual 1(2.5 at the Hotel). You will get soft drinks, wines and spirits there too as well as chips and some snacks. Its greatest asset however is watching the sunset from underneath a canopy of grapevines while sipping your drink. What a treat! Unlike Kosdere Hotel I recommend it to everyone. To sum it up: Kosdere Hotel is a joke. I would not wish it on my enemy. Forget it.

    rather don't

Went there with my boyfriend for a week in the end of June. Hotel itself is nice, located on the both sides of the road but you can go through tunnel really easy. Some rooms have sea view and what was important for me the beach was very close, about 5 minutes walk. We had to ask for a room which was good enough and it took us about an hour to finally choose one. Rooms are small, but clean and tidy, bottle of water everyday in the fridge ( which was not working ), clean towels. The air condition is set to 24 C and you can't go lower even if you are boiling in your room - the remote is stuck at the walls. Two pools, beach with dark sand, stones in the sea so you will need water shoes. Hotel is situated in a garden, so the surrounding is really nice, a lot of flowers and trees everywhere. We had an all inclusive version and if you have one you can really eat all day - there are two restaurants, coffee break with cookies, lunch and pancakes everyday from 11am to 4pm. Staff doesn't speak english. They speak a little bit of german and russian, so they can't even understand the simplest requests. This hotel is not for couples, I think it is the best for people with children, they have plenty of animations every evening, but they were mostly in russian, And it's not prepare for this amount of people which is going there. There were massive ques in the restaurant, this big I 've never decided to stay in them and eat a warm dinner. People were coming to the restarurant People are everywhere, children are running all over around and there is cigarette smoke EVERYWHERE AND EVERYTIME. I have no idea how it works, but don't go unless you want to spend entire days in cigarette smoke. With drunk russians. Other things then, the gym is just horrible. I have no idea why they even call it fitness center. Small room in the celing without AC, water, towels, anything, with really old stuff and just one cycle bike. It was disguisting. Go there, if you don't mind crowds and like to eat the same food everyday.

    not for british

Stayed here last July with my husband and 2 teenage sons. We were the only british there, hotel is nice as stated below however there are very long food queue`s. Rooms are small we paid for a 2bed apt got a 1bed with living area. Told by hotel manager who bare faced lied to us !! that this was their largest room, however later found out when we met a family later the second week who were staying in the new block and saw their room which was a very large 2 bedroom apt no comparison to were we stayed. Would only recommend this hotel to anyone who is not british.

certainly not a four star hotel

As the other reviews state, this hotel is mostly for Russians and Germans. If you do not speak Russian, German, or Turkish you might want to stay somewhere else. The positives were that the beach was very close, the food was included, the air conditioning worked great, and the hotel was very clean. The negative list is unfortunately much longer... I debated between 2 and 3 stars, but decided that it was indeed an average hotel, not a 'poor' hotel. Because the food was included this meant you had very little choice with regards to protein. As I'm not much of a liver fan, and my husband doesn't much care for fish, we ended up eating rice and veggies for more than one meal. Furthermore, I'm convinced that all of the cakes were made of play doh (although the turkish desserts like baklava were quite tasty). Bottled water served at the tables was simply refilled from the tap, not a new bottle like they would hope you to believe. Finally, all of the drinks were watered down, this includes orange juice, pepsi, and even wine. And yes, the lines for dinner were quite long. The beds were HARD, and so were the pillows. When we asked at reception for softer pillows, they could not understand, or maybe did not care. When the maid came to clean the room, she would keep knocking till we answered the door. I found this annoying, as it woke me up a few times. The maid would also leave the balcony door open, letting out all of our cold air! Another note on the rooms - the walls were very thin. We could (unfortunately) hear everything our neighbors were up to. The elevator was very slow, and sometimes the power went out, so we had to walk up 5 flights of stairs multiple times a day. There were a total of two staff members who were kind to me. The rest had a very rude attitude and didn't seem to care whether the guests were happy or not. The spa staff were really annoying and would ask you if you wanted to book a massage about 2 times a day. The beach was quite rocky and slimy (but lots of chairs and umbrellas). My husband and I went over to another hotel 10 minutes down the road (Pegasus something hotel?) to go diving and saw that their beach was sandy and beautiful! Sure, once you are swimming it is alright, but if you are walking in the water, watch out for the rocks. Each night after dinner there was a mini disco for children, followed by some loud music for adults. I didn't run too late, but you can hear it in your hotel room. No free wifi either! So, if you have a free stay here, go for it... but I wouldn't recommend paying!
