Great Restaurant but only So-so HotelWe stopped here on our way south to visit family in the Pyrenees. We were intrigued by the "viaduct de Garabit" that rated 2 stars on the Michelin map so we stopped here. I think we reserved at the wrong hotel (there are several in the village) as my wife recalls seeing a swimming pool photo and I recalled there was A/C - neither of which was accurate. But it was evening; everything else was full and we'd paid the night, so we stayed. The hotel is a 2 star one with a Lift (thank you!) and IF you get a room on the LAKE side, there is a nice balcony and view of the Viaduc - a 1884 engineering wonder by Gustave Eiffel - yes, THAT Eiffel as in the Eiffel Tower - that was illuminated at 10PM. Do not accept a "mountain view" room - they are right on the highway, noisy and NO air as the cliff opposite the road blocks all air that might pass (and car fumes too). We managed to get a Lake View room for 9 Euros extra (well worth it). Alas, no A/C in the August 2015 "canicule" (heat wave) meant a virtually sleepless night but still the dinner was excellent - worth more than the room! - and we could open the balcony door/window for some air that arrived about 3 AM. The price was average; the beds OK; room was adequate size - with balcony quite nice, in fact. The proprietor lady at Reception is a bit acidic and always busy but she got the job done. Seeing Eiffel's "rehearsal" for the Eiffel Tower was worth the detour and as an "etap hotel" (1 night en-route somewhere) it was OK but try to go when the outside temperature is under 34 Celsius!

Great view to ViaducThis is a nice hotel and great location just by the lake and with excellent view over the lake and to the Viaduc de Garabit designed and build by Eifel (yes same as the Eifel Tower in Paris). Look at the construction illuminated in the evening. The hotel restaurant and bar in and out were very good and nice food. Service was ok. The location by the lake was excellent and the boat trips starts just down from the garden. The surroundings below the hotel could need a gentle hand to give a better impression. Dogs are allowed but we felt that the owner was very annoyed and that she had to mention that the dog dropped a few hair on the floor. Other guest felt that she was to direct on this subject. We arrived Saturday and there were many free rooms and we chose a room with balcony and see view (EUR84/night excl breakfast). Very nice and we returned to the reception later in the afternoon to confirm we stay for 2 nights, not only one as in the first place. This was confirmed, but next morning we were called in the room and told that they had made a double booking and asked if we would waive the room as the other guest had booked 4 nights. We felt under pressure but the hotel could not offer another reasonable room, so we checked out without any compensation. Not good enough! WIFI not working all the time. This is a very nice place, but some things to improve.

nice view , nice restaurant 2 star hotel that may one day have been a 3 starThis hotel is in a superb location close to the lake with its cruisers, not far from an inland beach with great walks and pretty villages all within an hour or less. As previous reviews have suggested it is getting dated now - hence my thoughts it used to be 3 but now is 2. Don't get me wrong it was clean and well presented and the welcome was pleasant enough just needs a massive upgrade - it seems 1980's at best. The restaurant was good with very reasonable food at a reasonable price. To make an immediate impact I would spend some money on the gardens and fron car parking space. Amazing what a bit of weed digging and hanging baskets could do

Wonderful views outsideGreat views from our room of the viaduct and out over the water. Room and bathroom (retro pink fittings) clean . Terrace bar and swimming pool were fine. We booked a table for 7.30pm and the food was good. We were a party of four travelling south and one couple had stayed at the Garabit before. Sadly, though, at about 9.15pm Madame began to clear up and reset tables loudly around us and badger the waitress to get our order for dessert and the atmosphere changed. Apparently, according to Madame, the chef was unwell (though I saw him clearly through a serving hatch from the ktchen). If the kitchen closes at 9.30 then it might be an idea to let guests know. We could forget any chance of a post meal digestif when we left the restaurant just after 9.30pm - the bar was firmly closed. My brother, who speaks excellent French, discussed the issue with Madame (unsatisfactorily) and also took the matter up with the man on reception the next day. The cost of of our afternoon arrival drinks (three beers and an orangina) was deducted from the bill.

Reasonable StayStayed here with family last month. This must have been a wonderful hotel a few years ago. The staff were very pleasant and the meal was fine. The grounds could do with a massive tidy up and the rooms especially the bathrooms need updating. Overall a fair overnight stay. The location is fabulous.
