  Excellent choice in Lijiang

  This review is a bit overdue ! So here goes ! Now I am NOT a great fan of Chinese hotels - so when I booked Guanfang I was taking a risk. I wanted to stay in a villa rather than a room as it was a longish 10 day stay and I didn't want to be cooped up ! Well the chains like banyan tree or the recently opened Grand Hyatt were crazy exorbitant almost extorting ! So this seemed like the right balance and also the butler service sounded interesting. Boy was I pleasantly surprised ! I think they recently started tying up with private residence villas inside the resort so what you get is to stay in a much more lovingly managed property - the best outcome was we got introduced to Rina the concierge manager who is a lovely lady who spoke perfect English ! She also manages a tour company which is actually Singapore owned ( I did a review of that one earlier !) and that combination of a stay , English speaking concierge and tourism services and the photography opportunities we got as a bunch of solo travelers was great ! The rooms have been renovated recently across the resort but I think the private residence villas are better because hey are owned by individual owners who invest much more in keeping their property in good condition - go for these if you can and always insist on English speaking concierge ( ask for Rina if she is around or she will assign someone equally good).

  Clam and Relax, Good Food with Great Service.

  Lovely hotel, I stayed up there for three nights, room was very comfortable and clean facing to sown mountains. Breakfast was really good, huge variety of western, Asian and local food with brief Cantonese dim sum. I used the buffet on the second day of my stay, worth of money and a great deal of food variety. Service was good too, smiling staff and always there to help you out. A bit far from Lijiang Gu Cheng, bit difficult to get a taxi, but bell service at the hotel always help me out with t. You have to wait like 15 minutes after they call taxi to come over to hotel to take you up. So book the taxi in advance if you plan to go out to explore Gu Cheng. This resort will make you very relaxed, clam and refresh. I throughly enjoyed my stay there, and will return and stay here in future.

  Isolated resort

  The resort villa is well maintained and the rooms are neat and tidy. Each villa has three levels with 2 rooms each in the 2nd and 3rd level. The ground level is the well furnished living and dining area. Each unit is provided with a housekeeper who does the necessary cooking as dictated by the residents of the unit. No lift in the unit and the wifi is pretty weak. The nearest food joint is 15 to 20 mins by foot or 3 stops away by public bus. However, for those who wish to dine in, the housekeeper can prepare your meals. Ask her for the menu. The room I stayed in the 2nd level was very small and the one on the 3rd level was very big with a balcony as spacious as the room itself

  Resort feel (think of Chalet)

  The resort rates itself as 5 stars. Every villa/resort has 5 rooms, with a living room+sofa+tv for communal watching if needed. There is a kitchen also. 2 rooms on 1st floor and staircase to 2nd floor with 3 rooms. Breakfast was a wide spread but not fantastic. Room was big and comfortable. The housekeeper with the cooking for every villa/resort is no longer available, they have changed it to a common buffet breakfast at the main resort lobby. Far from Lijiang Gu Cheng, 10 mins bus ride away. Will probably not return, too far away from night activity. Good for families though. No pool or gym.

  Normal villa

  Chalet feel. The 'villa' we stayed in has 4 rooms, 2 room each on 2nd and 3rd floor. The kitchen and living room is on the first floor. There is a main door and a side door at the living room. Please do remember to check if the door in the living room is locked as we realized ours is not and anyone can just open and come in. Breakfast is not fantastic.
