Autumn getawayOur visit to Lewtrenchard Manor was an oasis in the storm that is Covid. As we came towards the Manor, I was reminded of the opening line in Daphne du Maurier's 'Rebecca'. But unlike Manderley we found Lewtrenchard a warm and friendly place to stay. There were of course all the safety aspects in place that has come with Covid but I don't think we were given a less than excellent service. Our room was more than comfortable with views over the gardens and across the fields. The manor has a grand old feel. We felt thoroughly at home. We ate an eight course taster menu, in the restaurant, each course was delicious and served with excellently matched wines. After dinner we joined other guests in the bar (all socially distance). We ordered one of the best Negroni we have ever had. Lewtrenchard is definitely a place I would recommend and will definitely plan to visit again. Many thanks to all the staff.

Not enough starsI have spent a lot of time in high end hotels over the years, many have been very good, and most have been good bases to visit the local area. But this place is worth visiting in its own right, it is like staying in a living NationalTrust property, with quirky nooks and crannies at every turn and extensive gardens for long country walks. The staff are amazing, the evening meal is a gastronomic masterpiece, and they are dog friendly. Everything is well considered, the rooms all have names rather than numbers, and all have an explanation of the reason for the name. Whilst the local area is well worth exploring, there are several walks from the hotel and Tavistock, Launceston & Okehampton are only 20 minutes away by car, make sure you allow time to enjoy the hotel itself. This is not just a hotel to stay in, it is a hotel as a destination in itself.

Short Walking HolidayThis is definitely not a top luxury hotel, like many manor houses are these days, but it is homely, comfortable and relaxing and a great and unique place to stay for a few days. We were made very welcome from the time we stepped through the front door and everyone tried to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. I would certainly recommend staying at this hotel and will definitely make a return visit one day. It is a unique experience staying in such a historic property. In addition it is situated in a beautiful and scenic location with the hills of Dartmoor in the distance. We stayed in St Gertrude which was a comfortable and spacious room situated just off the gallery which is worth a visit whatever room you're staying in. I did think more could have been made of the lounge area which seemed rather small for the size of the property. I was disappointed by the limited choice for afternoon tea which did not match what was being advertised but this could have been because we were staying off-season. Dinner was taken in the gorgeous surroundings of the restaurant. I wouldn't describe it as fine dining but there was nothing to complain about regarding the food and wines. Service was efficient, friendly and helpful. It advertised on the website that the dinner menu changed daily but this did not happen during the four nights of our stay. We enjoyed exploring the grounds which are extensive and also the kitchen garden which services the hotel. It is great for a walking holiday as there are so many walks which emanate directly from the hotel. The area is very sparsely populated, so it does feel like a get away from it all type of holiday. The hotel were very helpful in forwarding information about the walks in the area before we visited, so we could do a bit of advance planning. All in all, a very enjoyable break and one we shall look back on with fond memories since this was our final trip away before covid-19 was to strike and change everything. Fantastic location for a finale!
