    DOWN-MARKET BUT SURPRISINGLY PLEASANT

The exterior of the hotel was very faded and clearly indicated that the owners had decided to take it down market. Reception did not open until 1500 hrs but the receptionist, with virtually no English, was very pleasant and helpful. The reception area was neat and functional, but no more and we could see that most of the ground floor, apart from a small breakfast area had been converted to other activities, such as laundry. There was no longer any restaurant. The hotel is well located at the bottom of the main street and close to the gare. The room was of medium size, a little noisy with road traffic at a busy corner but with a pleasant view from a balcony over part of the town. The bathroom had an excellent shower. Breakfast was quite good but with no fresh fruit. Overall, a pleasant experience in what is now a hostel style operation. This was Day 6 of our 25 day trek through Les Vosges. Last night: Hotel des Vosges in La Petite-Pierre Tomorrow: Hotel les Vosges in La Hoube.

    Mediocre lodging, overpriced breakfast

The room itself was nice enough. A small bed. Reception smelled like cigarettes. Manager was rude to my wife and I upon arrival. We walked in the lobby with our bikes and were told with no explanation or other greeting that we must leave our bikes outside. No problem except that it was unclear whether or not the bikes had to be left outside for the evening or just during the check-in process. The receptionist would not allow us to continue asking if he had a safe place for the bikes for the night until the bikes were both out of the reception area (no problem) and off of his front porch (what??). We got the bike issue resolved. And got to our room which was okay. Breakfast seemed to be as low quality as possible for an additional 8.50/person. It seemed to be prepackaged foods. The meat was low quality salami-like substance that tastes okay, but had a cheapest-meat-at-the-grocery-store feel to it. Sad for a region known for its food.

    Horrible health hazard

This hotel is VERY dated. Stayed there one night and we were glad it was only one. Other reviews we read were far too postive. When we entered the room we were greatef by an odor of fungus and had to open the windows to vent and get rid of the smell. The rest of the hotel smelled like stale smoke. Dont know if they would pass a hygene inspection. There were more stains on the floor than on an impressionist painting. If you stay here: bring slippers. The nightly train traffic is not aiding a good night sleep. Breakfast was ok-ish, albeit a little overpriced.

Hotel National does a great dis-service to Saverne

I've stayed in some rubbish hotels around the world ( and many wonderful places as well )....but the sad run down shabby tired 'Hotel' National in Saverne, in the Alsace region of eastern France, just about eclipses them all in awfulness...reminded me of being in Romania in the early 1990's...we couldn't wait to get out ASAP in the morning...this place does a great dis-service to Saverne, a rather beautiful town in Alsace where we have stayed many times in the past - sadly the hotel we prefer 'Chez Jean' was full, although I think they just didn't want anymore guests, we were tired after a 400 mile drive so we took the easy option, rather than moving on....anyway, you have been warned...don't go near this place....

Good for overnight stay in Saverne

Somewhat utilitarian hotel, but good sized clean room with comfortable beds and well situated near centre of town. Pleasant staff and adequate breakfast. Quiet at night despite being near railway. On street parking immediately outside (requires modest payment to meter). Hotel clean and virtually empty when we visited. Very reasonably priced; excellent night sleep after a walk around the lovely town and a meal out at the memorable Tavern Katz.
