Look No Further! The Hotel Lenzehorn at Lenzeheide Is It

The Lenzehorn Hotel, at Lenzeheide Not Your Average Ski Resort, and Not your Average Hotel My family decided to go to Switzerland this year for after a trip to Vail Colorado last year. Let me say right of the bat, as my 9-year-old son put it, its much better in Switzerland, then Colorado though both have their virtues. Says my old friend, the charismatic Schimun Murk Former Director of Tourism for Graubünden, what makes Lenzeheide such a great place for a ski holiday is not just exceptional alpine hotels like the Lenzehorn, 300 miles of groomed ski slopes, 100s of rustic alpine huts and a record breaking number of sunny days What makes this such a great place for your ski holiday is something he calls the Swiss Factor. Lenzeheide, and the Lenzehorn combine the virtues of a world-class ski resort where excellence is built into the smallest detail, and the neighborly atmosphere of a small alpine village. As Schimun puts it "In a small alpine village its only natural to talk to your neighbors, to take a genuine interest in their familys well-being and to help them if you can,. As a visitor you can feel the warm embrace of the Swiss Factor, and villager culture the moment you get off the bus from Chur and check into your hotel. Greurzi Miternand, [Grea-tsi metta-nònd] (hello everyone) says the beautiful, young woman at the rezeption desk in the soulful language of Swiss German. To me this strong, but pleasing local dialect bespeaks a race of smart, sturdy people, who exude human connectivity and enthusiasm toward goals with almost every utterance No wonder Switzerland is a country with so many rich people The Front Desk Manager, Katheryn Zacharias who has the talent to become a CEO one day has done a splendid job of job of spotting super talented young professionals like Sadrina and mentoring them to make to become young rising stars in the hotel industry. You can also tell she is the kind of great leader who create a special culture where each person on the team without exception goes out of their way to make something happen that wasn't supposed to happen so as to deliver on the promise of innovation, operational excellence or unforgettable customer experience Katheryn and her team at the Lenzehorn get that this kind of guest experience cannot be simply engineered by following a template that includes a striking lobby, rooms with a view luxurious furniture 1000 ply Egyptian Cotton sheets, or remembering to ask the guest how many keys they want. The secret sauce that she and her team use have something to do again with that neighborly atmosphere that naturally leads to making real human connections with guests, showing just enough interest for them to talk about their goals and problems, then going of their way to help solve them. In our case, we arrived at the Lenzehorn front desk having unwittingly booked a (small) Bijoux double room that was too small for my wife, son and which, didnt lend itself to adding the extra bed. Wow, what a disaster I said to myself, feeling my stomach dropping as Sadina made it abundantly clear there wasnt enough extra space in the room to add an extra bed. Sandrina, enthusiastically too charge of the situation. Instead of scolding us for listing only two people in the Expedia Reservation for the room when there were three, she found a cancellation and upgraded us for the night She promised to find a creative solution for the other nights as soon as possible as the hotel was chock a block full and we couldnt transfer to a larger room. She then spent hours without our knowing it is calling every hotel in Lenzeheide, seeking another room for us to stay. In the meantime, we Sadrina came down to the room in a flash sorting everything out when we called saying as we didnt pack the right adapter to plug in our smart phone, and couldnt get power from the electrical outlet, (we didnt turn on the room switch). I left my room and walked up the stairs to the front desk just to tell her "Your amazing!" The next morning, we got a call from Katheryn, who told us not to worry. She had a creative solution . . . which involved a lot of work on the part of the hotel staff but cost us little, a small remuneration that we were happy to pay considering the massive inconvenience we caused. For dinner Sandrina found us reservation at the to the hotel s charming Stubli restaurant and bar where they serve Swiss local specialties and pizza. As the place was fully booked the hostess they sat us at a big table with some other Swiss guests. Rather than politely ignoring us or giving us, they turned toward each one of us and said Greurzi Miternand, making it abundantly clear we were more than welcome to join the fray. We had a delicious Fondue Chinoises with small potatoes, pickled onions and other side dishes Our friends at the table made sure to say good bye when they left as is Swiss custom. This kind of neighborly spirit where total to strangers treated us as dear friends, happened again both inside and outside the hotel and again during our trip. We talked with a Scottish guest of the hotel on the ski bus to the Fadhil Ski lift, and to a Swiss hausfrau who looked like a Boitticelli painting who was standing in line behind us as the Casse, and jumped in to act as a translator when she saw us struggling to speak with the cashier The next day we bumped into our good spirited friend, the translator again and she introduced us to her husband who was very curious about the American friends she had met I mention these examples not to draw this review out but to show you that even after no more than a few short days in Lenzeheide the chances are high that you will start building a network off meaningful relationships Katheryn and her wonderful team continued to provide us friendly, informal concierge service at every turn even though we were only one of many guests in the hotel on a super busy week. When I asked Katheryn if she had enough time to help us finds restaurant reservation for the next night as most places were fully booked, she responded by offering to find us reservations for the next three nights including New Years Eve which was likely to be sold out. When New Years rolled around, she caught my attention as I walked by the front desk, and asked me how I planned to get to the Post Hotel restaurant, a few miles down the road. I exclaimed out loud, Katheryn how can you possibly remember such details when you have over a hundred guests in the hotel? She responded as if she were my unofficial Chief of Staff, We discussed, it remembers. . One funny incident that happened at the hotel is when I went to visit the spa and wellness center after a hard day of skiing in powder snow, which made my legs feel like rubber. I seem to have walked into the wrong entrance, with my bathing suit in hand, and opened a solarium door only to see three naked women stretched out in the buff. Somewhat embarrassed, I said, is this for men and women or women only. One of the ladies said, Its for men and women, and by the way, she added. You are supposed to be naked, so take of your clothes, and you are also supposed to be silent. I guess this is a good place to end this review. Robert Hargrove

    Wonderful relaxing Days

We stay for a few days in this nice hotel. The rooms, Lobby, Lounge is made in a warm woody style one feels comfortable with. The Spa area is big enough with several saunas, very clean and relaxing quite. We booked including dinner and where warmly welcomed in the Heid-Stübli (as the other two restaurants where closed). Here a small recommendation. For half-board guest it's a bit tricky to select three or four dishes as it is quite traditional Swiss food which is a bit "heavy". I would add two or three changing options to the menu for a nice twist in the selections. Nevertheless the food was delicious no complain about the kitchen itself :-). Also the stuff was very friendly in the whole hotel. Perfect place for relaxing

The minimum one should expect when paying the rack rate

Savvy travelers know full well that prices at Swiss winter resorts are unsurpassed in Europe. Thus the guest expects a four star hotel like this one to meet quite high standards in every respect. The positive first: a very good garage with ample space and even reserved spots by name, nice bathrooms, a good location in the center of town, friendly staff. The rooms are nice, but not there yet - they lack electric plugs at desktop or night table level, and are not particularly large. Also, the design of the hotel is rather confusing and it's not easy to know one's way around. Lastly, there isn't enough elevator capacity. Can't say anything about the spa, as I didn't make use of it.

    Well looked after

The spa and wellness area is wonderful after a day of skiing with a heated outdoor brine bath with jets for every part of your skiing muscles and 5 steam & sauna rooms. It has 3 restaurants and the staff are all friendly. I had a ski injury on the first day and the manager, Kathrin Zacharias, really looked after me; finding me a doctor and giving me lifts and setting aside an area I can work in the morning whilst my husband was out skiing. We discussed restaurants in the area and she gave me good tips and helped me book all of them. I had a wonderful stay despite my injury and will happily return the next time. The hotel is centrally located and just across the road from the main bus station, one of the big ski shops and is in walking distance to most restaurants in the area. The room is on the small side but its nicely decorated and clean with a nice view of the mountains. Breakfast was good and it has a great outdoor area for après-ski.

Nice hotel, food not the best

We stayed here for three days. Very positive: nice rooms, super clean, stylish, very good location for cross country skiing and very central in town. Very friendly staff and nice wellness area. We were not happy with the food at all. Apart from the taste, which was average overall, we were served old and partly moldy (!!!) salad/fruit on two occasions. On other occasions the food did not seem very fresh either. Generally very greasy and oily and not easy on the stomach. Portion sizes were good. Would come again but only if the food concept is better...
