    Buen y Comodo Hotel

Gracias Chengdu

    Cheapest Room

We stayed in the cheapest room [special room (no windows)] to save money while travelling. Therefore this review is focused towards the lower class of their rooms. The location of the hotel is ideal, one reason we chose it, it is moderately close to the 2nd People's Hospital metro station (about 5-10 minutes) and before arrival the hotel kindly got in touch with clear instructions on how to reach the hotel, an issue we had overcome with a previous hotel. There wasn't a great deal of food places around, at least not that we found, but it is within walking distance of the TV tower and the bars below, and Wenshu Yuan monastery, among other locale. The crossing outside is daunting; it is a huge junction with a lot of cars, however we made it across to check in. Check in was simple enough, they asked for a 300RMB deposit and then provided our room key for a room located on the third floor. Having no windows, it is pitch black if you turn off all the lights so you never know what time of day it is. I like to put items straight into a safe, however this was the first issue as it was not functioning. I went to the front desk and to be fair, they were able to fix it within about 30 minutes. Another issue regarding the room, other than light, was noise, the walls seemed to be made of paper and you could almost hear people breathing in the corridor, not to mention a drainage pipe ran behind the room so everyone flushing a toilet or showering in the room above provided a very loud sound of rushing water. Furthermore, the room gets extremely hot, despite there being three separate air conditioning devices (central, a fan, and a plug in air conditioner). We also noticed some small bugs throughout the duration of our stay, I don't think they were of the harmful type however. You could argue 'you get what you pay for', although you would expect things like a working safe and perhaps some reinforced walls... On a positive note, there was a free minibar that provided more than just water; two soft drinks and two juices, as well as snacks daily. The toiletries were adequate and refilled when the room was cleaned, daily. Other amenities like a hairdryer and kettle are provided, as well as a TV, but this had no English stations, only CCTV occasionally airing English geographical documentaries. Rather unique to this hotel in comparison to those we've stayed at so far however was the free use of laundry facilities which was welcome. We did some washing, however I think the tumble dryer is slightly broken but our clothes did turn out fine. The gym is located along side the laundry, though I wouldn't really call it a gym, just a treadmill, bike, and range of free weights. As for the restaurant, we can't comment on breakfast as we did not have it (we ate at a nice bakery, left of the hotel and roughly one block away as you exit) but we did have dinner one night which was very nice, perhaps a bit oily, but very filling and relatively cheap, especially for a hotel, and had very efficient service. The desk were fairly helpful, however we did have to use our translator app frequently, and unfortunately the maps they provide of the area seem to be extremely out of date, with the metro map, for example, only showing four lines, despite there being ten... To conclude, if you're looking for a cheap room for a few nights in Chengdu then this hotel is adequate, perhaps the more expensive rooms offer better service however I cannot comment. The stay was satisfactory.

Very Interesting Breakfast, Loved Our Room's Balcony

Yes, the street noise outside is pretty loud since the hotel faces an incredibly busy intersection and overpass (see my pics), but so many other amenities made up for this deficit including a large and thoroughly Chinese-centric breakfast and the balcony we had facing the goings-on out on the street. Breakfast included such items as "cold" pig heart, fish jerky, spicy rabbit with celery, kimchi, "sad jelly", "refreshing fungus", sauteed Chinese broccoli, the most adorable "breakfast packets" (aka steamed buns with either oh, so sweet red bean paste, pork, or sauteed vegetables), eggs made-to-order, many other cooked vegetable, chicken, or pork dishes, yogurts, fruit, salad, soy and evaporated milks, a coffee machine putting out a good variety of coffees, black and green teas, and more. The coolest thing for breakfast were the giant, speckled mushrooms that ended up being another version of the breakfast packets as they were made to look EXACTLY like mushrooms but were filled with cooked mushrooms and were SOOO good. We totally appreciated that, on our second morning, we had to catch a very early train to Guilin before breakfast officially opened (7 AM), and the hotel allowed us to come in and eat before all the dishes was even done being put out. As for our room, yes, the noise of the street came in through the closed balcony doors (closing the curtains helped some), but it was cool to just hang out there and watch the Chengdu world zoom by, on foot, bicycle, electric scooter, car, bus, and truck. The mattress was very comfortable, there was ample storage space, and our room was impressively large. The bathroom amenities were standard (toothbrush kit, comb, shower cap, sewing kit), but still good. he shower was all glass, the bathroom window had a cool picture of a koi fish in a pond on it and there was a phone in there, as well, plus LOTS of light switches!. There were very interesting amenities in the large, double closet, including bathrobes, slippers, an umbrella, laundry bag, and condoms. As I said, very interesting amenities. Very thoughtful.
