A terrible sloppy place were something weird is happening !

Le Moulin de Mougins A historic place in Mougins We had great expectations of our stay at this place, but all our expectations about it fell down from the skies, without even waring a parachute, the moment we got there. When you do your "homework", as I thoroughly did, on each and every place you are going to visit in a long-time-planned and cherished Gastrotour of France....you don't expect a disappointment as terrible as the one we received at "Moulin de Mougins" hotel. We made reservations at the hotel based on some nice reviews and info published for this property. We select it, not only because of those hotel splendid setting, location and reputation, but - and mainly- due to our interest on having dinner at a historic place were the soul of the great chef Roger Vergé was still floating over it. We did exactly the same, going to "La Pyramide" in the Rhône area, trying to find in P Henriroux the soul of great Fernand Point...but there we did had - in contrast- a fantastically great experience. Before I begin relating our disastrous experience I would like to mention that We are a "easy-non-picky" family to please, but regarding this one I'm onlige to my TA reviewers to bring them it on detail. Those informations will be done by me not only as a "Luxury Traveler" (as stated in my personal TA info), but as professional architect and Hotel entrepreneur who owns several tourists properties In the Caribbean and, beyond that, a self-proclaimed gastronome and long time wines collector. I would like to say that when I have a hunch or an intuition about a place, I regularly follow that hunch, but here, even I had a bad hunch, I did not followed my intuitions...and I made a terrible mistake. Lets begin saying that regardless several emails that I wrote to Vincent Lecuyer, regarding our requested reservations for their famous restaurant, I never received a properly due answer; we made our first mistake, insisting in going there, due to our desire to include this historic place in our Gastrotour de la France. We received proper responses from all the other places, places like; "L'Auberge de L'Ill", "Le Montrachet", "La Pyramide", "L'Ostau de Baumaniere", "Chateau Grand Barrail" and "Lancaster". When I asked about our response from Lecuyer the "emphatic" response at hotel reception was " M Lecuyer receive hundreds of emails...and he couldn't answer to all of them"...wow ! I, myself, respond every single day, directly or via my assistant, all my several emails. That is a question of respect for others. But I believe he seems to be a young man with lots of things in his hands, besides managing what seems to be a troublesome situation at this place that needs, not only owners but managers attention. Now, regarding the place itself; when we were guided to show our rooms I immediately noticed lots of details that indicated a highly deteriorated installations and facilities; painting, roofs, floors, stairs, air conditioning etc etc and that appreciation was increased the moment we entered the sloppy room with its deteriorated linen, curtain, bathroom and bedding ! The second room they gave us- as an upgrade- was as terrible as the first one. We were wondering if we were at the same hotel that we reserved and read some nice comments. A place, as they state in his website : "Stylish getaway with gardens & an upscale restaurant, plus plush rooms & suites with free WiFi " Besides it they advertised " A rare artistic and gastronomic address in the french Riviera"...in which the "rare" findings were all those sloppiness and refurbishing needed at the place. After wondering if it was better for us to go to other place we decided -wrong choice- to stay there as it was late night, the place is not located in the town itself.... and we were very hungry (restaurant is review separately). Besides all those details in our "new" room, overlooking the patio and courtyard, we found horrendous details like a "duct tape" covering what seems to be a leaking AC's roof problem, our curtains were loose and dirty as well as the carpet inside and outside that room. The finishing in the corridors were damp and smelling bad...what a disaster ! At our return I had no time to complaint to our Hotel.Com reservations, but my son, who took care of that, will do it. Other hotels terrible details, which we couldn't figure out if it was just like that was that the only way up was a very narrow dirty carpeted stairs, where we found terrible to carry up our many luggages for that long trip in France. The only detail that survived our critic eyes was the nice, well kept old Moulin, located, as a work of art, in the front desk and reception areas. As a note on F&B I need to say that the breakfast was terrible, with poorly setting and some sloppiness as well. Their main restaurant, reviewed separately, was just right...nothing to rave about it or deserving our long trip there. Their personnel was attentive, but either not well trained in hospitality or lacking service enthusiasm. They say in his web that the place is settled in a captivating setting which opens onto the outside gardens and Provencal restanques, the works of some of the best contemporary artists meet the autographs of past and nowadayss celebrities. I could be wrong and, as hotelier I feel miserably badly, needing to say that it seems to be that they are living up by its already past glories (doubtably new or actual glories go there), with no interest in their future, because : A place actually in those conditions has NO FUTURE !

    Very expensive / very average

We looked this restaurant up on tripadvisor and the recent critics seemed quite good ( they've been closed all winter due to the floods). Tried to go on their website but it didn't work so decided to go anyway. Le Moulin de Mougins has always been a amazing beautiful gastronomic restaurant. Everything looked very different on arrival, even a new entrance and no valet parking. A lovely lounge area for aperitifs and then we went to the dining room that was very nice but rather basic. The menu came on a simple printed piece of paper and there was hardly any choice. I ordered pasta with gambas costing 45. I was served plain pasta with 3 small gambas on the top and a tiny little pot of sauce of the size of a egg cup. My partner order tuna costing 35 and they charged 4 extra for a saucer of green beans. The dessert was a very small chocolate fondant, that looked like it had just come out of the freezer with a ball of ice cream served in a cup on the side...for 12. All the dishes had no decoration or anything to make the plate look pretty. It feels like there wasn't any chef in the kitchen and that it was just somebody putting things on the plate. The staff were all friendly but I don't think anyone was a trained waiter. So the only thing that hasn't changed is the bill... Gastronomic prices, that I don't mind paying for if you get your money's worth. What a shame. I've got such lovely memories there...

    Dinner with friends

We went not realizing that it had changed hands and was not what we were expecting. There had been terrible damage after the floods, so this is a new set up. The building is still traditional and stunning, but the atmosphere was disappointing, The menu was fine and the food good, but it was not a "special" evening, We sat outside but it was no longer the top and exceptional restaurant of the past. A pleasant summer's evening and relaxed. We all had choices from the set menu and it was delicious

Overrated - seems to have deteriorated.

Wasnt fine dining , lovely setting. But corporate : feels like its trading on its past. Feels like its been bought by a brand but they dont do wow. Over priced for what it now is. So much of the menu was Japanese : ok that was not what we were looking for. Had the linguine and lobster - was heavy and frankly worse than mine at home ( not that I do lobster very often !) Service was average. Sancerre by the glass was decent. Wasnt impressive : wish we had left out memories intact. Shame.

AN EXCELLENT LUNCH AT THIS REFURBISHED CLASSIC RESTAURANT

This restaurant, in a building that was a windmill in the 16th century, has a striking culinary history; several famous French chefs worked there in past years. The restaurant was refurbished during 2019, and now is fairly modern in appearance internally. We visited for lunch, and were impressed - with the range of choices on the menus, the quality of the dishes, and the prompt attention of the waiting staff. I particularly enjoyed Tartare de Saumon as a starter and Millefeuille de Buf as a main course - this latter dish was really tasty. Also, members of our party spoke highly of a main course with cod and Beurre Blanc. This restaurant is highly recommended, and warrants a visit again.
