    Hotel Fine, Restaurant Not

We arrived late as the town and road is poorly signed from Cognac (this is nothing new in France). Our room was a little dated but clean and fine for the price and the setting was very nice on the mill stream. As we had the windows closed we weren't too disturbed by the constant flow of traffic on the raised road but in summer it would be noisy. As it was late (9 pm) we had no time to go out to find somewhere to eat so we foolishly agreed to eat in the restaurant when the owner asked us in the carpark if we wanted him to 'hold the chef' as it was late. We did feel a little hustled into this. The restaurant was chilly and the prices were far too high for very average food (28 - 30 for a main course! with only a sprinkling of veg). We would have expected some Michelin stars and amazing food and environment for this price. My fish was cold and three little circles of cheese for 8 - who are you kidding? The cheaper end wine however was good and well priced so we took some solace in that. (Choose the Loire Sauvignon and have a starter only is my advice!) We declined the breakfast at 8 -12 each and went to a little snack place across the road where we had nice coffee and croissants for a total of 6. All I can say is Beware.

    nice hotel, disappointing food

The hotel is lovely, the rooms are comfortable, the decor is very very dated (amusingly so) but the food was such a disappointment. We had selected the hotel on the basis of the restaurant reputation and both had the tasting menu. The starter was good but it went rapidly down hill from there with each course getting worse and worse - the cheese course was a inedible! And the owner gave a very poor wine recommendation that added very little to the food. Breakfast was equally poor - burnt pastries and what seemed like baby food. Stay in the hotel by all means but eat elsewhere.

    Disappointing

It is very difficult to review somewhere when you are the only guests bar a salesman who we never saw. The room was clean and the shower good. Our dog welcomed and le Patron friendly and attentive. We were not affected by traffic as the road from Cognac was closed just after Ceirzac. A fact we discovered after leaving the next morning (we did feel that the patron could have warned us of this so that we could have avoided the 20km diversion!) We had drinks on the terrace beside the mill stream which was lovely in the evening sunshine before dinner. We were alone in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast so a lack of atmosphere which was a pity as we liked the room and its decor. The meal was ok but not I think worth the 3 marmite's that it has been given by Logis de France. We ate considerably better in Chinon next day for less. As we had chosen to go there for the food we were disappointed. We felt that the meal did not give the quality that he price suggested choice was limited and was not good value for money. The room was perhaps better than we had expected.

    Food Good, Room Disappointing

The exterior of the building is beautiful and the dining room is similarly a lovely room with character. The owner was charming and helpful as was the only other apparent person working there when we were there, the waiter. He sorted out our internet access on my laptop. The big disappointment was the room. We had the twin room and I don't know if the other rooms are as dated, but I would not have liked to have had a bath there. I was bitten several times overnight as well, which may have been bad luck and not typical. When you go upstairs it suddenly changes from a manor house to a pokey two star hotel. And that is what it is - a 2 star, so I should not have been surprised. If they ripped the rooms apart upstairs and got back some of the original character it would be a lovely building. The food in the evening was excellent. It was very quiet and it left me wondering how they could afford to have this excellent food kept fresh. The demand just did not seem to be there, so surely it was not fresh? Whatever the case, it tasted excellent. It was my fault I asked for our beef 'well done' as this usually means at most medium/rare in France. However it did come as requested, ie: well done. The restaurant is expensive but worth it but the breakfast at 18 euros for two of us was the worst value. A couple of small croissants and a glass of orange juice each. I should not complain as we struggled to find anywhere near Royan to stay - all full. This hotel did come to our rescue. It does need the bedrooms refurbished and new bathrooms etc. That costs money I know so easier said than done. It has a lot of potential but needs the money spent. I think the restaurant would be more full if slightly less expensive. I wish them luck as the owner is a charismatic and helpful man who deserves to do well.

    Very, very disappointed

Myself and my friends had dinner in this hotel a few weeks ago as we had frequented this establishment years ago and throughly enjoyed our meals. It had variety of menu's and the food and service was excellent! I'm afraid to say this time the menu was basic ! Food was shocking , bones in our duck and had some sort of sauce which wasn't at all nice. Shellfish Coquish comprised of dried up pieces of fish and no shellfish which we expected! We were all extremely disappointed as certainly the food quality or should I say lack of did not warrant what we paid for! Such a shame as this hotel In the past had so much potential!! Needless to say we won't be returning.
