One of the best parts of our holidayWhat a spectacular location. Philip and Anne were wonderful hosts. We had a ball here - this included flying over the station in a small plane, going out across the station for a picnic in a 4WD and visiting their woolshed. The cottage was really lovely and the evening meals were so tasty ( and delivered to our door no less!). Totally recommend it.

BEWARE!!!!!!!!Disclaimer - my experience is based on The Block Hut (A hut/property of Lake Heron Station) I stayed there for a few days recently, I do not recommend if: 1. You don't have a 4w drive as the road condition is not good, definitely not suitable for a saloon or sedan car. 2. You required a bathroom and proper toilet - they only have an outdoor shower without cover and a toilet (no flush no light, just a hole) some 150-200m away. Imagine if you need to go to toilet at night. 3. You are unfit or with very young children. No electricity supply, not to mention internet, phone reception, emergency system. If anything happens, it will take you an hour to go to the main road with very bumpy road. 4. If you care about PRIVACY - the manager (or owner's representative) came to visit us on the first day which he informed and we appreciate. On the third day, without prior info or notice, he came again. Worst still, with a big group of people ie. 6-8 to visit the hut (the hut is in an enclosed area with gate but upon entered in, the hut is sort of like see through as it is very tiny with a lot of windows and glass doors. It really gave me a big fright especially I was about to take a shower (As mentioned, it is an outdoor shower without cover). I feel that my privacy has been seriously intruded. As a rental properties owner, I urge the owner or the manager to respect your tenant's right and privacy. 5. If you RESPECT honest feedback & review - I left them a review on their FB page. Without any apology or message, they deleted of my review. (I booked because of their 100% good reviews and now I know why)

A Special ExperienceTo stay on a New Zealand Sheep Station in a very comfortable cottage and to enjoy excellent food served by a friendly and knowledgeable host was a special experience for us. The scenery is spectacular, surrounded by mountains and near by the lake. We enjoyed talking to our host about life in a totally different environment to ours. A special experience - no doubt.

Best 30th birthday getaway at the New HutLast year I stayed out at the cottage at Lake Heron and fell in love with the area. It's such a stunning valley surrounded by beautiful mountains with lots of walks and trails and it's great to see it used as a working merino farm. The cottage is modern and cozy and a great escape. Came back last weekend for my 30th birthday with friends and stayed up at the New Hut, which is a nice modern kiwi hut, further up the valley with lots of renovations. Definitely need a grunty 4WD to get up there in the autumn or winter especially if there have been rains but lots of fun to be had, has big cozy bunks with proper mattresses and big duvets and pillows, double glazing makes it really warm and there's hot water, full gas kitchen (no oven) and even an outdoor shower, long drop outside, definitely what you wish all huts were like, great views and a perfect place for outdoor lovers and adventurers to base yourself for a few days with friends! No reception so you can get off the grid and back to nature in comfort. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Off the gridWe stayed at the New Hut on Lake Heron Station and absolutely loved it. Its the perfect mix of rustic and luxury. Very comfy bunks with feather pillows and duvets - I wish all bunk rooms were like that! The hut got really toasty thanks to the wood-burning stove and double glazing, with loads of hot water. I even braved an outdoor shower. There were also really nice touches like a wee leather couch, wonderful kitchen table, sheepskins and even a stags head on the wall. Being Scottish, I felt very at home.... The stars in the night sky were incredible and only surpassed by the daytime views of the Southern Alps. Its worth the fairly challenging 4 wheel drive to get there. Luckily, the friends that took us love off-road driving so were happy as larry fording rivers and bouncing over rocky braided river beds.
