    Apartments showing wear

We just returned from a week's skiing holiday in La Plagne 1800 staying at Lagrange Prestige Residence Les Chalets D'Edelweiss. We stayed here last year and booked it after enjoying our stay in 2017. This year the apartments are showing a lot of wear and are needing some attention. The pillows were stained and rather disgusting and this was quite off putting to start with. The sofa bed in the sitting room had some if its top layer missing and was covered up with a throw. The door was hanging off one of the cupboards and we did not have a kettle for the entire stay despite asking repeatedly for it. We felt that there was a huge difference in the standard from the previous year. Yes, it is in a prime position and that was very nice but I think we will be going somewhere else as it is very expensive and not worth the money any more. Our tv only showed the winter olympics in German and there was one English news channel. The apartment next door had a much better system and many more channels. We have been disappointed this year as the apartment was obviously not checked before we arrived. Three lights were needing replacement bulbs which we had to ask for. They were replaced. There were a lot of glasses and plates that were missing too. They were not replaced. I do not expect to use my holiday time chasing up missing items in an apartment that I have paid for.

    Ski in ski out

This is a self catering apartment block, not a hotel. It's in France so the usual French self catering rules apply: book a 6 person place for 4 of you, a 7 bed for 5 etc. There will not be an oven. You will need to make up the beds. The reception will not be open 24 hours. They do not provide a 'welcome pack' as is common in the U.K. But we knew all this, so had a comfortable apartment with plenty of heating, plates & mugs etc, kettle and toaster and microwave and hob, warm bedding, a ski locker, a swimming pool and a balcony overlooking the slopes. Genuinely ski in ski out. Clean, warm, convenient and comfortable.

Good value accommodation but some drawbacks

We booked a 6 person (two bedroom = twin plus double) appartment for our family of four. Compared to similar (cheapish) two bedroom accommodation in Les Menuires, it was a bit larger, the two bathrooms (though only one toilet) were a bonus, it was nicely decorated (to our taste!) and felt relatively roomy, although as with other similar places, 6 people would be a challenge! On the downside, there is no free wifi (much to kids dismay!), the TV was a basic analogue with digibox and I suspect that due to its location and orientation quite a bit of the accommodation has very limited views of the slopes / mountains / village. The view from our ground floor accommodation, while not feeling dark, was mainly of a steep snow bank and chairs on the nearby chairlift. The accommodation was right next to the piste but La Plagne 1800 has a few drawbacks. To get to the main ski areas requires two lifts that I imagine would be annoying in busy periods with lift queues. There is only one supermarket which appeared quite expensive compared to similar ski resort supermarkets elsewhere, possibly due to their monopoly in this area. Eating out is also extremely limited with only one restaurant and two bars that serve food within a 5-10 minute walk. Possibly, La Plagne Centre had more choice but it was not clear how frequent the buses ran and would have been a bit of trek. La Plagne as a ski resort has some lovely intermediate runs, particularly when snow is good to the lower levels, and with a full area lift pass, visiting Les Arcs will keep most fully occupied. However, Les Arc to La Plagne 1800 requires a minimum of 5 lifts (starting with the Vanoise cable car) and therefore even competent skiers should allow an hour (without queues) to get back. It was also not clear whether the resort was being 'over-cautious' or simply 'lazy' in getting runs safe such that after a modest fall of snow a large number of black runs and quite a few reds were 'shut' and the glacier was out of action for the rest of the week. Furthermore, at the same time two good 'reds' were taken out of action, several days in advance of a resort competition. Overall, if you want good value accommodation, enjoy mainly cruising on blue runs with a few reds thrown in, enjoy doing lots of different runs each day and are not looking to eat out in the evening then La Plagne 1800 and Edelweiss may suit. However, if you want some nightlife, getting to the top of the mountain (or Les Arcs) quickly, or views, perhaps try elsewhere.

Amazing location with bonus of Ski in Ski out!

A group of five of us stayed at Chalet Edelweiss this last week (wc 12th Jan) in the eight person apartment. As previous reviewers have said, booking an apartment with a bit of space (i.e. four people, book a six bed, five people eight bed etc) means you have a bit more comfort/space. You could fit eight people in there, but it'd be a squeeze with adults especially if there are no couples as it'd require sharing double beds! Our transfer arrived just after 12pm where reception had closed until 5pm...We were surprised the tour operator seemed surprised by this, but the staff said we were welcome to leave our luggage and make the most of the half day lift pass. We collected the passes from the v.convenient office opposite reception, and then our hire skis from the equally convenient Sport 2000 (via a beer at Bobsleigh Pub as the hire shop was closed until 1:30pm) and made our way down the slope 30m to the Melezes chairlift and onwards up Bergerie to the rest of the resort. The apartment was nicely finished, with a few bits of wear and tear noticed. Make sure to fill out the checklist of items and report any issues by Monday. We took bits and pieces with us to help with cooking on the hob, such as a grater, sharp knives, extra chopping board etc as well as some cleaning products (there's a dishwasher so remember tablets). When it came to cleaning up on the Friday before we left we went to Spar (about a 10 minute walk away) and got some extra cleaning products to do the floors and bathrooms etc. We loaded up on food at Spar in the village and cooked in two big batches which sorted us out for the whole week, with a couple of nights out at the very excellent Cantine restaurant and pizza at the Bobsleigh pub (which does takeaway too!). The Spar was about what you'd expect price wise, but c'est la vie! Bedrooms were comfy...we drew straws to decide who got the double (I lost) but the twin was absolutely ideal for two grown men and the bathroom was nicely done out - although the shower's sliding door was a little snug for a big bloke like me! The location is literally incredible...Sure it might not have the most restaurants/bars in the village, but it takes about 2 minutes walk to get to the lift pass collection point, the nearest hire shop, the nearest pub and the first lift of the day. La Plagne 1800 is small but perfectly formed in that respect. La Plagne Centre has more shops and bars/restaurants, but does require a ski back down the hill to the bottom of Melezes via either a simple enough Red or a windy (and a tad icy) blue that brings you out a little further away - so bear that in mind when making evening plans. Other bonuses of the location include the free resort shuttle bus which stops directly outside Chalet Edelweiss...Again, I can't fault the location at all! The staff in reception were helpful, informative and very polite. We ordered fresh bread and pastries every evening before 7pm for collection the next day at 8am and they were delicious and a godsend to five sleepy guys! It was a good mix of families and groups of friends, with no massive parties that I could hear (most of that was confined to the excellent La Mine pub just down the hill!) and there seemed to be plenty of bookings. If I came back to La Plagne I would definitely book at Edelweiis again. It was my first experience of self catered after four catered holidays and it worked perfectly well.
