A weird experienceWe arrived at la Spatule and were told that the chef was sick, so we could either drive about 20 minutes for dinner or they would serve us a salad with cold cuts and dessert in the room. The food was generous and good, but picnicking in a hotel room was a little strange. Then the staff all went home and locked up - we were the only guests, all by ourselves - in a huge chalet! But the room was spotless and breakfast was good.

Not prepared to be a winter locationBeing a guest for three years I enjoy the Hotel and very much the cuisine in the Restaurant. I always go in March and experience winter, when in Geneva it is almost spring. Although it take some time to travel to geneva the winter experience is nice. This year we had a lot of snow and I was warned by the reception, it was a lot, but they did not react and clear the drive. I aws stuck, when I arrived a t night and in the morning 10 Business men in suits tried to dig out their cars w/o a shoevel or any Tools, just some wood and Hands. by talking to tehm later that day, they just mentzioned that their Job starts at 7 a.m. and before they could not do anything. This is poor for a place in the mountains, therefore the last time I went, although the place is nice.

Tired hotel and no interest in clientsRemember 1977 and your first independent skiing trip? Little Suzie M - went like a rocket on the slopes and off. What did you need then? A bed, clearly, and a shower and Suzie. La Spatule would have been perfect. But its not 1977 anymore and things have moved on. Now, there are a lot of very different memorable things about La Spatule. Theres dated décor straight from 1977, the tiny size of the room, the absence of air conditioning and the disinterested staff. Only the prices have moved with the times. Dont believe the pictures either on the website. The good rooms are at the back of the hotel but, I guess because we booked through Booking.com, we were stuck in the stygian darkness at the front of the hotel, overlooking the tiny car park and the main road into Switzerland. Before booking we politely, and in French, asked for a quiet room and were dumped right next to a road which was busy with trucks from 6am onwards. After our first night, we asked could we be moved, sil vous plait, but we were told that the hotel was fully booked - which was strange because it looked rather empty. But the best was yet to come. The hotel seems to be part of the Logis de France chain and they asked us to complete a survey at the end of our visit. We did - and got a snotty e-mail for our efforts. Heres the end. Our property is rated 8.6 on the booking website, your rating is not justified. Well, our rating IS justified and it can be summed up simply. Avoid this hotel unless you want a reminder of how bad things were in 1977.

Don't be put off by first impressionsWe arrived here after staying in an absolutely adorable hotel earlier in France and I have to admit that at first sight I wasn't very impressed. However, the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. The room was comfortable and there was good WIFI reception. The restaurant was excellent and the staff helpful and friendly. Lamoura is a very little town out on its own and quite a distance from Saint Claude down a tricky bendy road so perhaps not the best place for a long stay unless you are a walker because there are many lovely walks to be had. It might also be a good base for skiing enthusiasts.

Wonderful quiet hotel in the Haut JuraWe stayed here for two nights after abandoning the St. Hubert in St. Claude. We loved the cool, fresh air, the many windows (room 200 had a huge window overlooking the field in the back, a window in the walk in closet, a window in the shower room, and a window in the toilet)! The price was a little higher, but we slept well and loved the sound of the blackbirds below us and the cows in the adjoining field. The bed was comfortable enough, but was two single beds pushed together. The wifi was good but required you to rejoin every two hours. The room was spacious and had a writing desk, which was a plus. The hotel also has a bar with some local wines and somewhat local beers (I had La Russe, made in Grenoble) and a restaurant with multiple vegetarian options (we did have to ask for one dish to be made without meat, and they happily obliged). The pasta with broccoli dish I had was bland but of good quality. The location is halfway between Les Rousses ski area and St. Claude, so it's an OK home base for either one, plus it's a very short drive to a wonderful hike starting in Septmoncel. There's also Lake Lamoura, about 5-10 min. away by foot (either a quiet road or a footpath). All in all a very nice location. There were even business people there working on the terrace with their laptops and mobile phones.
