    Nice and quiet location

From the documents available at the La Plantation it was clear that it wasn't really used to a lot of non-french speaking guests ... but as it turned out during our 1 week stay it wasn't a problem. Staff was friendly and making an effort in trying to understand and make themselves understood. From a friend living in Guadeloupe we were told that La Plantation had been a 5 star place some years back, but apparently hasn't put the money into keeping the level, so now it's 'only' a 4 star place ... but a pretty decent one. However, in spite of some areas of fine-tuning we had a very nice time there, as we really valued some of its key strenghts : a beautiful pool, quiet location and free access to a tennis court & mini golf. So a good place to start your Guadeloupe exploration from ...

No running water 2 nights out of a 3 night stay

If you are considering booking this hotel I would really recommend looking elsewhere. It's not really a hotel, the front desk is housed in a separate building to the rooms, which is only open mon - sat, from 8.30am to 8.30pm. This is the only building that has wifi, so no internet access in the room at all. When we arrived, after a delayed flight, we were outside the operational hours of reception and had a number to call for someone to drive to the hotel and give us access and a controller to switch the air conditioning on. What she didn't tell us was that there was no running water, we had to call her back after we discovered this gem. We were told there was a water problem on the island and it would be back on at some point the following day. We since discovered this is not true, and it was a regional problem that Saint francois suffers from. Quite why there hasn't been an investment in a water tank if this is a recurrent problem I don't know. Having said that there's very little investment shown in the property at all. The room was very, very tired. Decor and furnishings had random stains, burns marks, chipped tiles, holes in the wall. The bed was like sleeping on a rock, and the pillows were equally stone like. We had booked a studio for two adults and a child and our five year old daughter with us who was apparently supposed to sleep on the couch. A spare duvet was provided if you hunted for it, replete with cigarette burns, but no sheets, no duvet cover and wait it's Saturday night, so you can't complain to anyone until Monday, and you're checking out on Tuesday. In the interests of being fair, the pool area is nice with a huge pool, and the gardens are well maintained. There are however no pool attendants so be prepared to take your own pool towels. There is no daily housekeeping, nowhere to put your rubbish, or get replacement rubbish bags etc. And for our third night we were really delighted to come back from a days sightseeing, looking forward to a shower and feeling refreshed, to find the water was off, again. So another night of a family of three, sharing a studio, where you cannot flush the toilet because they don't even provide you with bottled water to top up the cistern manually, or actually even apologise for failing to meet any basic standard of hygiene. The water was still off the following day at 11am when we checked out so it's anyone's guess how long the remaining guests have waited to indulge in the luxury of a shower and the ability to flush their toilet. This was an off the hoof, last minute long weekend away for us, and frankly, due to this hotel, we are really wishing we just hadn't bothered.

    Nice and fun

We enjoyed our stay here. Staff was friendly, just up the street from the center of town. Very quick little drive. When we where there half the location was condo, and other half hotel so a mixed bag of people.

tranquil, serene, close to all the best Grande-Terre has to offer

gorgeous, perfect stay in paradise. my boyfriend and i had a "studio" room that had a kitchenette, full bathroom (with 2 sinks!), couch, coffee tables, TV, dresser, coat closet, and best of all--a beautiful private terrace that had a table and chairs for al fresco dining (we also used the space to practice yoga). the pool is a few steps away, and is absolutely gorgeous. we could walk to the marina/downtown st. francois area, but once we got a rental car, getting around was easier and more efficient. complimentary breakfast was a very nice addition--fresh fruit, croissants, bread, coffee, juice, muesli--and it was relaxing to eat in the main house every morning with the doors open, overlooking the beautiful grounds. the only negative was the bed--very hard and pillows were not great either, but it's possible that the beds in the bigger rooms are better (our bed was 2 single beds put together). we woke up every morning to the lulling hush of palm and tamarind trees swaying in the Caribbean breeze, in addition to softly chirping birds. the room had great black-out curtains, so even with floor-to-ceiling windows/doors, we slept soundly into the morning without being woken up by the bright sun. FYI I speak French fluently. Most of the staff there is not particularly well-versed in English, and we were the only Americans staying there, to my knowledge. so if you know no French whatsoever, it might be tough to communicate, but that being said--there's not a whole lot you need to interact with the staff for, and hand gestures would likely suffice for most of what you'd need to chat with them about.

For the love of God, do NOT stay here!

My partner and I went on an island hopping trip to Martinique, Dominica and Guadeloupe. I can't praise the first 2 islands enough for it's friendly people, tourism industry, and it's accommodations for foreigners. Before we traveled, I contacted all 3 "hotels" to request information on popular tourist attractions. I emailed AND called our resort in Guadeloupe and was given zero information. When we arrived at the resort, we were initially so excited to see such a lovely place. We were anticipating to have a fantastic time. We couldn't have been more wrong. The first thing I did was go to the counter to request for power adapters for our cell phones. We are not European so our phone chargers needed adapters. This was primarily so we could take photos of our vacation, call taxi cabs, and use our language translator since we don't speak French. The woman at the front counter told us blatantly that this "isn't a hotel" and that they don't offer those kinds of services. From my experience, I always assumed that a resort was supposed to be an upgrade from a hotel, but clearly I was wrong. When I asked how can I possibly get one, she told me that we'd have to go back into town, which was an hour away, but everything would be closed by now. I then asked where we could get food, as we hadn't eaten most of the day and were very hungry. She told us that the closest place to get food was at the marina, but it's a 20 minute walk from the "resort", and there were no sidewalks on the road. I asked her what about the restaurant at the resort. She told me that is only open from 12 PM to 2 PM. I also asked the woman about if they had any fliers about tourism in Guadeloupe. They had about 50 different flyers, but not a single one in English. We ended up going into town and bringing them back some English flyers so that hopefully they would be able to help the next poor soul who stayed there. I asked about possibly getting a tour guide to take us around to see places in Guadeloupe. She told us that you had to book a day in advance and someone would come the next day. Little did we know that they just booked a regular taxi, who had the meter running the whole time, and ended up charging us nearly $300 after about 5 hours. I don't blame the driver. He was a very nice gentleman. But he wasn't what we requested. We did the exact same kind of trip in Martinique and only paid the equivalent of $60. And even Dominica cost us $120. Our room was also a bit disappointing. The air conditioning unit basically only functioned by being on or off. So you had to choose between sweating and shivering. Our kitchen had a massive crack along the mirror. There was no wifi in the room. The TV wouldn't turn on. The phone wasn't functional either. If you want them to clean your room or replace your towels, you have to pay a fee. The final straw was at the end of the 2nd day, we found out that the "resort" offers breakfast, and they didn't bother to tell us. You also have to tell them a day in advance to have breakfast. To make a long story short. Please do NOT stay here. In fact, I highly recommend Martinique over Guadeloupe. It's everything that Guadeloupe is but better. More people in Martinique speak English. The service was better. The locations were more beautiful and clean. It was much cheaper and the food was better.
