this year was our 4th time (and not the last.. ;-) )

We've become fans of Ile d'Oléron throughout the years, since it is an ideal holiday location for families with children. Temperature in summertime is mostly between 22 and 25°C, ideal for outdoor activities (cycling is highly recommended!). La Cascade offers the good mix between rest and accessibility to all places of interest on Ile d'Oléron. The chalets are basic, and not always super clean. A few years ago, the houses were renovated, and new ones were added. Especially the new ones are clean and comfortable. Swimming pool is OK and clean, however rather cold, especially in the beginning of summertime.

Good for families, but not flawless

Due to cirumstances, we booked our summer holidays quite late, only about 1 months before departure, so the hotel choices were relatively narrow. We anyway managed to secure a booking in the Nemea La Cascade hotel, in Dolus d'Oléron, at a reasonable rate. The "hotel" consists of several Oléron-style bungalows in various sizes. The pools (3 of them, from kiddies to adults pools), were just adjacent to the reception, as well as the gym and play-rooms. We were however surprised that everything which should be taken for granted in a hotel, isn't included in this one: you pay extra for the tv, for the Wifi in your bungalow (while the public one at the reception is free, but often very slow or not working at all), heck, even the bedlinens had to be payed extra, as well as the bath towels. We even prefered to buy own ones in the nearby shopping center, it was cheaper than the fee the hotel wanted to "rent" theirs. Be also aware that you won't see anyone cleaning your bungalow at any time during your stay, because you will even have to make the end-cleaning yourself, or you'll get charged a hefty fee of 59.-- per person if you don't do it. Well, that was the negative rant about the hotel. The positive one is that the location of the hotel is rather nice. It's in a quiet spot in a side street on the outskirts of the village, but not directly at the ocean. We got a 3-rooms bungalow with a double bed in one of the bedrooms, plus 2 single beds in the second bedroom. Additionally the sofa also converts into a double-bed, by pulling the drawer under the sofa. There wasn't any a/c in the room, however the climate on Oléron is constantly a tad cooler than on the mainland, and our bungalow was under a giant pine-tree, so it never was too hot. The furnishing, equipment, and the room itself was rather a bit worn down, definitely less nice than the photos on the website suggest. But it was ok. There are for example barely any two matching glasses, cutlery etc. present, but we actually didn't miss anything. The parking was free, and there were always sufficient parking spots. The pool area was rather nice, actually it was the favourite spot of our kids. I didn't use any other amenities of the hotel, although there would have been a sauna, a gym and a table tennis available too. A word about the hotel personal: they were always very competent and helpful, nothing to complain here. I'd think that the bungalows are in need of a good makeover, and the cleanliness is also a bit a drawback, as the hotel basically lets the guests do their job. Our stay was nevertheless quite nice, but I'm not sure if I'd return there again, unless they renovate.

Good place to stay for people on a budget

Our apartment was compact - it was advertised as being suitable for up to six people, there were four of us and that was enough. The pool was very clean, would benefit from a little maintenance - few loose tiles, wobbly steps, nothing serious though. Facilities in the apartment were good, we would have preferred a cooker/oven instead of a dishwasher in the kitchenette. Instead there is a small hob and a microwave, so your cooking options are a little limited. The staff were very friendly. Lots of families - great place to holiday with kids.

    very pleasing setting and accommodation

Our bungalow was spacious as there were only two of us in accommodation for 6 Clean and comfortable with all we needed for our two week break. Helpful staff and lovely pool. The residence was convenient for beaches, shops and visiting the rest of the island.

    Quiet location

We stayed in Bungalow No. 4, tucked away in a corner it's in a very quiet location. The accommodation is basic but sufficient. The pool area is well maintained and very clean. Reception staff are very helpful and advised us on many things. Only disappointment was that there is no where on site for refreshments....the opportunity to buy a drink, snack or ice cream whilst at the pool would be ideal.
