    Surprisingly good onsen hotel

I was having trouble to search for a suitable onsen hotel when I was trying to prepare the trip. This hotel wasn't appeared to be so good on the website or maybe my Japanese is just too bad to understand this is a good hotel in the region. When we arrived, as the hotel wasn't located on the street side of the main road, we were puzzled and was preparing for the worst. It turned out that our worries were just ignorance. This onsen hotel was run in the traditional way but with relatively new decorations and the staffs are all young, humble and provide excellent services. One of the young lady staffs can even speaks OK English so we communicated well. I wasn't so sure about dinner and so did not booked one, but when I arrived I decided we must try their dinner as there is a lot of confidence to us when we had our first breakfast. Anyway, our room was on the 1st floor so so need to take some stairs to go up. Room is traditional Japanese style and was spacious, tidy, and come with a nice garden view. The male and female onsen will exchange in specific times, and the hourly rental onsen are free for use by hotel guests if there is no one renting it. This is an onsen hotel of great quality and not expensive. Highly recommended to anyone who will stay in the Tsuruoka area.

An all rounder ryokan in the countryside

We arrived at Yutagama Onsen after sunset. The entire town was so quiet that we could hear ourselves breathing. GPS kept telling us we arrived at the destination but there was no sign of it. We had been circling for 5 mins in narrow streets till we realised the ryokans entrance was tucked 15m away from the main road, carpark was 50m away. We got off and staff brought our bags and led the way. A warm reception area to check in and we were led to our room shortly. The double storey room has the sitting area on the entry level with the bedroom and a private onsen on the top floor. Our meals were served in a private room with a nice Japanese garden view. Generous portion of food and an extensive list of local Yamagata sake. There are two public baths to switch between genders. Both were spacious. One had an interesting deco of an aquarium and another stone rabbits to touch up both indoor and outdoor bath. Value for money for a night with two meals at $450.

Best seasonal food & service in northen Japan

Onsen ryokan in Yamagata prefecture, northen part of Japan giving you a wonderful experience you can ever wish for, delicious food, great service, private hot spring, traditional tatami room with a cozy garden. They serve various kinds of course meals with seasonal ingredients. This time we tried the crabs. As you can see in the photos, we enjoyed those amazing dishes prepared by the great chef. They also have a wide range of sake coming from Yamagata prefecture, which matched very well with the food. This was my 6th time to visit this ryokan, and they always go beyond our expectation. With the delicious dinner and breakfast, it makes me feel that the very nice room, onsen, and the heartful professional service come free of charge becuae of the amazingly low price for the stay. This place is not the most accessible one, and in the winter, they have sever blizzard. However, it is definitely worth the effort.

small Ryokan with excellent food and personal attention

We stayed 3 nights in this small Ryokan and we felt, from the first minute, really pampered. Everybody is extremely friendly, they try to give all information in english, they offer free transfer to the train station in Tsuroka, which is about 25 minutes away. Rooms are comfortable, also the Futon! There are two Onsen, really nice. Food and presentation was excepctional good. The Quality was amazing. This is often the case in Japan, but we travelled for four weeks in many Ryokans and this was our favorite experience, as it is small, intimate with 100% personal attention and its really lovely people there. Every evening Dinner and breakfast was pure joy and delicious. Arigato so much, especially Kasumi, she even wrote the breakfast menu in english for us.

    I...

I stayed at Annex Tamaya. You can enjoy 5 hot springs, the original Kuhei has 2 and Annex Tamaya has 3. The room was Japanese traditional style, but furniture was modern style. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. I enjoyed the stay.
